Let's Play ADOM

<< | ^^ | >>

Chapter 17: Caverns of Chaos IX

Floor 36!

Some random late-dungeon cavernous floors, which are good for EXP farming.

I'm actually getting worried about my spell castings - I'm running out of every bolt spell other than Magic Missile.

Oh Jesus.

Good thing I have all these awesome ball spells!

BALLS

INSANE MONSTER SPAWN RATES

Things have taken a turn for the worse!

I can't get enough rest down here to recover my PP, and I accidentally attacked a Karmic Lizard.

It's time to retreat for now!

Using the shortcut to reach the altar on the upper floors of the CoC!

Okay, karma dealt with.

Now to deal with my spell castings!

TO THE INFINITE DUNGEON

This is already helping!

MEH

MEH

Progress!

PROGRESS

Okay, I'm a bit more prepared now!

Time to vacate the dungeon.

Not taking the shortcut, as I have to hit up dwarftown!

Farewell, si! Today I sell the last of you!

This time, I think I'll take

THE DWARVEN HALLS

Aside from one moloch, there's nothing too scary on this floor!

Level 27!

New Talent: Good Learner, for bonus EXP!

Next level at 3,387,178 experience.

Okay.

This is a little scarier.

DIAMOND GOLEM

Resists all four elements. I have to use Magic Missile.

Anyway, back to descending the dungeon!

And we're back!

INTO THE UNKNOWN

Huh!

I guess it was just a single rogue cavernous floor.

Another diamond golem! Glad I got to practice back in the dwarven halls.

ANOTHER VAULT these are bad for my health.

But good for my exps.

Ooh.

I'm prepared for fire monsters.

And a named Great Red Wyrm in the center!

I KILLED THE ANCIENT CHAOS WYRM, YOU ARE SMALL FRY.

Killing the boss nets me 428k experience, and another level up!

Stun ray improved. Next level at 3,871,060 experience.

Even the vanilla red dragons give me tens of thousands of experience! This is beautiful.

Oh, CHRIST.

Karmic dragon! Resists every element. Can't engage in melee. Only safe options are missile and magic missile.

At least it's just a baby.

Next: The third Chaos Orb!

Hi, just created a profile to comment and basically tell you how much I enjoy your LP's. The Fate/Stay Night one was phenomenal, Ever17 was great, and as for ADOM...
You introduced me to this game, for which I thank you.

I'm commenting on this specific post since it contains the floor my best character died in.

Rest In Peace, Wolt Purtz. Level 32 human weaponsmith.
Petrified by a damn gorgon on level 36 of the Caverns of Chaos.

Just as a point of interest, the second place on my high score list is a level 20 who died at the Water Temple, just to give you an idea of how much this guy achieved, and how terribly crushed I am that he died.

Anyway, thanks again, Prof.

Hey! I'm glad you liked the LP enough to check the game out. It's pretty impressive that you got this far so fast, especially as a weaponsmith.

Gorgons can be dealt with in three ways that I can think of: Long-range combat, petrification resistance, or very high DV, which drops the chance of petrification working.

Next time, go for the bottom floor!

I credit you with a lot of my progress, since I remembered quite a few bits and pieces of what you did (like blessing water/potions, etc.).

And yeah, I'd killed gorgons before on the same character; I killed them all in melee with no resistance due to DV+luck. This one kind of just caught me by surprise.

And yeah, weaponsmiths are my preferred class for some reason. It's probably smarter to play a paladin or wizard, but meh. My second place is a lvl. 20 paladin. It's a pretty damn distant second.

That's one gruesome thing about this game, you know? Now I've got to take it from the top. Argh...
