Let's Play Uplink

Chapter 6: The Message

An amusing little phenomenon here.

See all those "Trace a hacker" missions? I can't accept any of them.

Those are the missions to trace MY hacks.

But let's get some real missions! Time to see what is possible when you're this badass.

Framing people!

This will be a two-part job, and will require some more software.

Log_Modifier allows me to change the details of a line in a log file!

First, to do the dirty work!

Let's hack Protovision.

There... weren't any data files in here!

Hopefully this counts. Sometimes you get weird missions like this.

Log Deleter to kill the connection logs, except for the one where I actually did the hack!

Then, I take that log entry and change it to be from Tim's personal computer.

Now, advance time until he gets caught.

Sorry, Tim!

I'm in the business of ruining people.

Speaking of ruining people named Tim, that is the content of my other mission!

I need to destroy this man's life.

Cutting straight to the chase, as I am an evil man! TO THE GLOBAL CRIMINAL DATABASE.

Hm!

New security at work.

This is the elliptic-curve encryption cypher!

Fortunately, I have a way to deal with it.

This is what Decypher is for!

Because of my nigh-omnipotent computer, this is an easy hack.

And cracked!

After this is a normal password, which I can hack in an instant.

The trace begins as soon as I hack the password!

Time for the hunt.

Hello, Tim!

This is not nearly criminal enough.

Yes, much better.

AUTHORIZE ARREST

I do enjoy being bad.

And done! Again, we wait for the news.

SUCKER

Your fault for being born a Tim.

Let's kill some time waiting for interesting missions to crop up.

While waiting, I get a notable email!

Agents,
If you are reading this email then it means I am dead. I have been working for Andromeda for the past month on a top secret project - and until yesterday I did not even know exactly what I was coding.
This story hit the news and I decided that I should try to find out what was happening with project Revelation - and yesterday I managed to gain access to their stand-alone server room and copy the files they were working on.

Unfortunately they saw what I was doing and I had to leave quick, and I haven't had time to analyze the project files yet. If you read this then they have already caught me.

ARC cannot be trusted. We must come together and a group and find out what they are up to before something terrible happens. I don't know if it's already too late.

In a statement released today, they say 'Uplink Corporation is currently investigating the claim that ARC have been developing some kind of high-tech weapon, using the expertise of freelance Uplink agents to assist them. Federal agents have been called in to assist and are also persuing the matter of a recent suicide, which they believe may have been a related murder.

'Until we can determine if these charges have any truth in them, we must insist that all Uplink Agents refuse any work being offered to them from ARC or anyone working from that company.
Anyone caught working for this company will lose their Uplink status immediately.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK

New security! External connections not permitted.

This one, at least, is easy to fool.

I'll just add a couple public terminals to my map, and connect through them.

Voice Print! I don't have a voice print.

Fortunately, I can get one.

The ARC public access server lists the email and, more importantly, phone number of their system admin.

LET'S CALL HIM

This is why I bought the Voice Analyser.

James mumbles some half-hearted hellos into the line, and gets only silence in return.

I now have James Headland's voice.

BACK IN WE GO

Then, Voice Analyser plays back the requested text in James's voice!

SUCCESS.

The other two are just like the GCD. Let's hack in!

Recoil's password is no longer valid. I need to crack admin normally.

We're in!

Let's take a look at the file server.

Hmm... nothing to unusual in here.

How about the logs?

!

Somebody copied a file called RevelationCore from the database, shortly before Recoil's death.

Unfortunately, the trail ends here, leaving me with nothing to do but disconnect.

However...

How the fuck did you find me.

We couldn't help but notice that you have recently been poking aruond in some of our computer systems, presumably attempting to determine what is happening with our company at the moment. We feel we should warn you at this time that any attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems will result in SEVERE consequences.

Pleasantries aside, you may have heard that we have been hiring a number of Uplink Agents recently for a yet-to-be-announced project. Your recent activities caused us to run a background check on you, and you seem to be the kind of agent we are looking for.

If you would be interested in doing some work for us, we'd love to hear from you. Reply to this email or send one to internal@ARC.net, and we will see what we can do. We think you will find that ARC offer the best rates for freelance agents in the business.

Next time: A deal with the devil!
