Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 7: The Apprentice

<< | ^^ | >>

No, taught you before, right?
And you used it before, right?
Did you forget?

You were also a witch apprentice, Ange, with your name entered into the Mariage Sorciere, weren't you?

At a high-class and high-confidentiality hotel, Ange pages through Maria's diary. Amakusa's out in the lounge, where the sofa is softer than his own bed at home.

MARIA appears to Ange, confirming that she is indeed able to use magic. She could in the past, at least.

Any reason, even something as small as loneliness or boredom, can become a source of magic.

How long has it been since she used magic? Ange can just barely remember it. Her power has dropped greatly since then.

Amakusa is in the other room, but he's asleep. As good a time as any to give it a try.

The existence of humans is toxin to magic. A low-level magic user like Ange can't us it even if there's one person present.

Next: A vessel.

If she was younger, she might have been able to use something as simple as the beads in her hair. At her level, though, she needs an item with more magic power.

Something like this. The only remaining Stake of Purgatory.

The Mariage Sorciere is an alliance of witches, including both Beatrice and MARIA.

She barely remembers it happening, but Ange is a member of that alliance, too, so she can summon the Stakes as well.

The memories are starting to come back to her. This is Mammon's stake. In the past, she had been able to summon them without any vessel at all.

Knowledge is a source of power as well. Ange remembers everything she can about the furniture Mammon.

A charm in the form of a scorpion. A must for any summoner. MARIA's skill at creating magic items is the level of a genius, considering her age.

Rid yourself of all anti-magic power. Erase doubt and common sense.

Remember the feeling of using magic.

The stake comes to life once more.

It speaks, bitterly frustrated at its inability to break through MARIA's barrier.

Mammon has been summoned!

She grudgingly accepts Ange as her master, at Lady MARIA's urging.

Ange doesn't have any particular orders just now. She just wants to chat. Mammon isn't happy about it, but she can't disobey.

Mammon suggests a different approach - if her own power is added to Ange's, then they might be able to summon all seven Stakes to the same vessel.

Maria warns Ange about overstepping her limitations in her current form, but she agrees regardless. Time to see how many Stakes she can summon with her feeble power.

No proper vessel this time. Just willpower - try to remember who they are.

Close your eyes. What form did they have?

Going from youngest to oldest. First: Asmodeus of Lust.

Bit by bit, the second Stake is revived.

Next: Beelzebub of Gluttony.

If she loses concentration, this will be Ange's limit. Her head is already throbbing.

Next: Belphegor of Sloth.

Maria says that she's done a good job even getting this far, and should give it a rest. Mammon, being a demon of greed, isn't happy with that much. She insists on going for broke.

Next: Satan of Wrath.

Mammon and Belphegor refuse to erase their forms until all seven have been summoned. They want to have a lively reunion first!

But this is her limit. Ange collapses, barely conscious, from the effort.

She falls into a deep slumber, surrounded by the nostalgia of the quarreling sisters.

MARIA and Sakutaro are waiting to congratulate her at the doorway to unconsciousness.

Ange dreams of another time. Back when she first learned to use magic.

MARIA chastises her for her mental space being far too small. Ange has to create an entire world.

Unfortunately, Ange's imagination is badly limited. She can't imagine a big enough space.

Maria can't teach her about her own mental world as a stepping stone, because this world must be truly isolated. If she used Maria's world, then Maria would be a part of it.

Maria's mental world, full of happiness, was only a dream. However, it had filled Maria's real world with real happiness.

Blow the world away. Understand its vastness. Feel the wind in your hair.

Ange takes the first step into the world of true witches.

It's time to try magic that will give her some friends.

Sakutaro is one possibility, but Maria suggests trying the furniture of Beatrice.

The witch who stole Ange's family.

Obstructions are appearing in Ange's mind again. Thoughts of the Eva Culprit Theory.

She shakes her head, and recreates her world.

MARIA summons them as a demonstration this time. For a witch like her, this is child's play. Finally, the Seven Stakes are reunited!

Satan demands they all give Sakutaro some breathing room before they damage Lady MARIA's furniture.

The lively party that is the Stakes is back in full force.

The Mariage Sorciere is an arrangement of mutual non-aggression and non-interference. So, such powerful weapons as the Seven Stakes can play with Sakutaro freely, and aren't a threat to one another.

MARIA makes a new pact with the Stakes - her power that materializes them will be granted to Ange. In exchange, they will be at her side as allies all the time.

This is training for Ange, too. It won't be easy for her magic power to support such a crowd, even with MARIA's help.

That's that, then. MARIA reminds them to take it easy if it becomes too much for their new master.

So the witch's apprentice shall gain seven new pieces of furniture.

Ange can immediately feel the pressure of having all seven Stakes in her head at once.

MARIA agrees - this is too much for Ange to be able to balance her normal life.

In the end, six of the seven have to erase their forms for Ange to be able to restore her breathing.

In the end, it's just Mammon after all. Ange gains a new respect for how ridiculous MARIA's power is.

The other side of greed is looking brightly towards the future.

Ange promises to train until she can summon all seven, and Mammon promises to serve her faithfully until that day.
