Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 15: The Prisoners
<< | ^^ | >>

Gaap
One of the 72 Great Demons. Also Beatrice's friend. In response to a magician's demands, she gives the power of instant movement.
She always uses this wonderful power for pranks. Hiding keys and bags during busy mornings is her specialty.
However, this power becomes a final weapon which can easily strike the finishing blow in closed room mysteries. Her queen bee-like attack would probably pierce all famous detectives, making them surrender.

Back in the guest house, everything is more or less normal with the cousins.

Maria's been woken up from her nap.
Her insistence that she's not half-asleep quickly and suddenly erupts into a full-on tantrum.

With George's help, they finally manage to calm her down. However, she's still acting a bit odd.

Maria forgives Battler. Or at least, she says she does.

Guests? This late at night? How strange.

October 4th, 1986, 10:32 PM
25 hours, 28 minutes remain

Kyrie tries to wrap her head around what just happened.
What is this place?

Gaap's power had plunged them through the floor, so it stands to reason that they might be beneath the mansion right now.
Still, was there always a dungeon beneath the dining room for all those years? And how did they get down here, if the ceiling is solid stone?

The jail cell they're in contains Kyrie, Krauss, Nanjo, Shannon, and Kanon. Gohda and Kumasawa seem to have escaped.
Nanjo speaks hollowly about first aid for the people who were attacked earlier, but...

Moving along.
Asking Kinzo for mercy, or even explanations, is out of the question at this point. He is clearly insane.

Gohda and Kumasawa seem like they might be of some use in saving the children, but they're also the ones in the biggest danger.
The Second Twilight is to tear apart the two who are close. Those two escaped together, and they may die together.

Kyrie, meanwhile, is the first to question the idea that they fell down into some space under the dining room.

They all fell from different parts of the huge dining room. This cell is tiny by comparison.
The fall was instantaneous, not some series of interlocking pipes.

Kyrie suggests that they were drugged. There was no pit. They simply felt the sensation of falling as they lost consciousness.
There's still something strange, though: Shannon's watch says that it's 10:40.

Of course, the watch hands could have been tampered with as well.
Nanjo doesn't know of a drug that could produce the instantaneous unconsciousness that they would need for this, but he also can't prove that one doesn't exist.

Rather than the main mansion, this could be Kuwadorian.
At any rate, there's no loose bars here. Not loose enough to pry open, at least.

There's a few random items around the cell, including an old phone. Maybe if they take the metal parts out, they could function as a lockpick.

Then, from Shannon and Kanon, a shockingly strange revelation:
The phone is still connected.

There's a tone when Kanon listens to it. They might even be able to contact the police!

They try various combinations of ways to reach an outside line, but it's no use. The phone is connected, but not to the outside world.

Her sense of hope fading, Kyrie thinks back to the dining room. Even though she was there, it's hard to think of it as something real.

No matter how insane it seems, never stop thinking it through. There's no such thing as magic.
Still, those events are beyond hard to explain.

A breakthrough! The external line is cut, but not the internal line!
Krauss calls the guest house. This is their best hope of escape.

Meanwhile, in the guest house.

Krauss isn't able to tell her the truth. After choking for a second or two, he simply says to pray for her safety.
From Jessica's response, he knows - Gohda and Kumasawa told them everything. She already knows what happened to her mother.

The cousins must avoid grandfather at all costs. He's out of his mind and extremely dangerous.
That's why they must, no matter what, make no attempt to try and rescue the survivors.

Don't run out to die. Stay there, and survive. Make this a siege, not a hunt.

With some last well-wishes, the phone call ends. They quickly go to the first floor to close and lock all the doors and windows.

But no matter what they do, this can't be safe. Kinzo's army is probably carrying guns.
They have no choice but to follow Krauss's advice and barricade themselves in the guest room.

It's a horrible situation, but all they can do for now is hope that the others manage to find a way to break out of their cell.

The only truth that Gohda is certain of is that those strange people killed six people under Kinzo's orders. Magic or no magic, the mansion is a deathtrap right now.

Things begin to quiet down. Jessica talks with Kumasawa about whether or not there's any hope for Natsuhi. There isn't.
Kumasawa starts to regret mentioning the brutal ways that they died, with their heads half-smashed.

For now, all she can do is wait for another phone call.

George comes back with drinks, food, and a first aid kit. Gohda has a folding ladder and carpentry tools, to seal the door shut.
Battler has a table leg and a pole made from a broken hat stand. Weapons.

There's a second barricade at the top of the stairs. If the enemy comes that way, they'll hear it being torn down. That was Battler's idea.

30 hours remain until help will come, at the earliest. That's how long they have to endure here.

Maria is the only one who doesn't have any sense of imminent danger, as usual.

Back in the cell, things aren't looking good. Those bars won't budge.

Since they can't break out, their next priority is to figure out where they are. As they do, the two servants keep watch.

Kanon can make out distant, noisy breathing. Most likely it's Beatrice's goats.

It's rare for Kanon and Shannon to even survive the First Twilight, let alone the whole game. For now, Shannon's happy that they're even able to talk like this.

Kanon is keeping his hopes as low as possible. The idea that the roulette is random is a lie. Beatrice chooses whichever order is most amusing to her.

To kill time, Shannon tells Kanon about the Golden Land. She's only caught a glimpse of it, though.
Kanon doesn't think it sounds all that great. Isn't it supposed to be a place where all your wishes are granted?

Not exactly. It's a place where wishes are not necessary. A world released from all suffering. A world where witches, humans, and furniture are all equal.
So then, why does it matter if George is there or not? Wouldn't it be happy even without George?

It's a world where all sadness is gone, but not a world where all happiness exists. Compared to the human world, a blank slate is a step up, but having the people you love there can still make it even better.

Regardless, Kanon isn't holding his breath. He hasn't made it to the end even once.

Somebody is coming.
Several people, actually.

Something strange is definitely going on here. Is their opponent really an all-powerful sorceror?

Ronove, Virgilia, Gaap, and Kinzo.

Nanjo seems to understand something from Kinzo's taunts. He's been down here before.
But how could they have come this far? It seems impossible.

This is Kuwadorian. The legendary hidden mansion, created to chain his beloved witch.

As the girls wax philosophical about love and imprisonment, Kyrie asks Nanjo about his comment a moment ago. This is a hidden underground tunnel that connects Kuwadorian to the main mansion.
In other words, there's a safe route from here back to the mansion they know.

If Kinzo is to be believed, then there is only one way that these five can be spared: If one of the grandchildren proves to be worthy of inheriting Kinzo's title and fortune. Their test shall soon begin.
But what will happen to them if they fail?

Ronove politely urges Kinzo back into the direction of the main topic of this discussion.

Kinzo orders Krauss to call the guest house again. Tell the children of the fate that awaits them.
All the adults can do from now on is pray that their children will meet their father's expectations...
