Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 25: The Magic of Happiness
<< | ^^ | >>
In accordance with recent developments, an update has been made to the Ushiromiya family tree.

Amakusa turns off the radio. All that remains is the sounds of the ocean.

The ship steadily approaches Rokkenjima.
The island looks totally unfamiliar to Ange. 12 years have erased any remaining memories, save one.

The beginning of everything, and the journey's last destination.

Rokkenjima has two harbors. There's the one everyone knows about, and another hidden harbor around the far side. Only Kinzo, Genji, Nanjo, Kumasawa, and the people involved with the boats knew about it.
Two harbors, two mansions. All for Beatrice.

Some of the things he shipped over to the rear dock were the sort of things a high-class woman might use. He believes that there was a Beatrice at Kuwadorian.
He never saw her once in 20 years.

One day, Genji sent an urgent message that the back shipments were no longer needed.
In other words, the death of Beatrice.

Eva survived the Rokkenjima Incident by hiding in Kuwadorian, supposedly. How did she know about it?
What if there was an underground passage?

It's a stretch, but so is building an entire mansion and harbor for one person.

The captain points the way to the mansion, but doesn't go on shore. For the time being, this is where they part ways.

Both of them. Ange's delivering something, and she needs a minimum of anti-magic toxin to do it.

Ange sets off into the ruins of Rokkenjima.

After a long walk, she reaches the no-admittance zone, marked by an ivy-covered sign. She climbs the fence.

It's been twelve years. The site of the mansion is nothing but landslides and cliffs now.
This is as far as she can go.

This is Ange's destination.

This began as a journey to find a place to die.
Now it's a journey to accomplish something. She can't go down that cliff.

In that singular moment, Ange believes. Her family. The servants. Maria. They're all here.

She is here as the last daughter of Ushiromiya, and as the last witch of Mariage Sorciere.

Ange calls out to the Maria of 1986.
She finally understands how much she wounded her on that day. She understands everything.

The day she wounded Maria's heart was the day that Maria's world began to change.
Can those days end? Can they return to the original Mariage Sorciere?

In Ange's hands, the pages of Maria's grimoire flutter in the wind.

In the early pages, magic to bring happiness. In the later pages, magic to curse enemies.
Maria wasn't like this at the start. She was a kind, innocent witch.

The wind falls, and is replaced by the sound of footsteps.
Has a miracle occurred?

Not exactly.
Kasumi has six henchmen in tow. With eight people here, the magic has been interrupted.

The goons seem to be armed with handguns. This is a deserted island.
It's the perfect place for someone to disappear mysteriously.

Ange talks back, but that doesn't get her anywhere. She's slapped hard enough to make her head ring, thrown to the ground, and kicked repeatedly.

Kasumi isn't even talking to Ange. She's talking to Kyrie, who's been dead for twelve years, through her.

The goons proceed to beat the shit out of Ange.

Kasumi's entire life is consumed by hate for Kyrie and her family. It's almost pitiable.

It's a lot like Ange and Eva, in a way.
Killing Ange won't bring those years back. However, it might let Kasumi start over from zero.

She really should have brought Amakusa along.

Somebody is tormenting Ange. Is it Kasumi? Is it Eva? Does it matter?

When someone is burdened with more pain then they can bear, they push it on to others.
That's what's so incredible about Maria's magic. Instead of redistributing pain, it changes the past so that it never happened.

Eva was a person who lost her entire family, and who lashed out at Ange in fear and pain.
There was nobody to support her, and the world blamed her for their deaths. Unable to bear her pain, an evil witch taught her the same magic that Maria learned after the death of Sakutaro.

It's just like when Maria speaks of the bad witch possessing mama.

When Ange spurned Eva as a family member, she was the last thread of connection she had with the world. Ange left her to bear the weight of Rokkenjima alone.
And when she couldn't bear that pain, a witch came to her, and showed her how to force it onto others. If only there had been a good witch around, to show her how to lessen her pain.

Maria taught Ange how to use magic to create happiness. However, Ange only ever hated Eva, so she never saw the black witch inside her.

Throughout the punishment, Ange keeps staring at Kasumi. She can see the sadness behind that sneer.

The power of the black witch is the power to take pain and multiply it into more pain. The burden is never lessened.

Innocent or Guilty? Guilty. Make her suffer until she hurts as much as you do.

One of the goons viciously tramples the flowers Ange brought with her. His face is also twisted with hate.

Kasumi picks up Maria's grimoire.

Ange's resolve finally cracks. That's Maria's precious grimoire!

The one thing she can't deal with is Kasumi belittling Maria. She opens to random pages, laughing at the contents along with her allies.

BGM: Thanks for Being Born
Spells that Maria and Sakutaro made to conjure happiness disappear.

One by one, the black witch tears pages out of the book.
Didn't you know? Magic isn't real.

The page that created the Stakes is torn away. The toxin burns Mammon from within.

The black witch still isn't satisfied. Next, let's find the page that created Sakutaro!

Sakutaro's origin is destroyed as well.

She was the same way. Ange looked at Maria's diary, and saw a pitiful life.
But despite that, Maria summoned a world of happiness for herself.

Just one spell left to destroy.
