Let's Play Spelunky
<< | ^^ | >>
Attempt #8!
Early floors:
Floor 1: Found a box of *twelve* bombs, rescued dame.
Floor 2: Used one rope and one bomb, killed a giant spider to get sticky bombs.
Floor 3:

This is a kissing parlor! You can pay some inordinate amount of money in exchange for a kiss from a dame. It restores one health, but doesn't count as a rescue. You can also try to buy the dame herself, but this usually costs so much money as to be wholly unfeasible.
I tend to skip these, as it seems so un-gentlemanly.
Floor 4:

This is a dark floor! The farther you get from light sources, the smaller the radius of vision around you becomes, until you're virtually blind. Fortunately, these floors always provide you with a box of flares at the entrance. Still, they're dangerous.
Rescued dame, found key but couldn't find the chest, so no Udjat Eye.
Floor 5: Used another two ropes, one left.
Floor 6: Lost one health, rescued dame.
Floor 7: Used one bomb, gained three bombs.
Floor 8: Lost one health.
OKAY.

With this, we have finall escaped the jungle! NO MORE FROGS.
What is our next zone?

Welcome to floors 9-12, known by me as the Yeti Zone!
While there are a number of things here more dangerous than anything found in the jungle, this zone also tends to lend itself to very fast navigation, due to being full of wide open spaces.
Two new enemies in this screenshot! First is the noble yeti. Yetis have tons of health and are immune to whipping. Also, should you run into one, it'll throw you as hard as it can in a random direction, which does one damage, and can cause complications that will be clear later.
The second is the UFO, which has an anoying tendency to hover above you, JUST too high for you to jump and whip.

They also shoot these little green lasers when they get directly over you! It's bad. If they don't hit you, these lasers can destroy blocks of ground, which can be dangerous, but can also be used to your advantage.

The single most dangerous feature of the Yeti Zone is what's below me right now. These floors have no bottom. If you fall down there? Instant game over. See why the yetis are so dangerous?
Floor 10 passes without incident in 15 seconds, so let's move straight ahead to floor 11!

Good lord, these dames get expensive.

See these little platforms? If you stand on them for more than about a second, they fall. Tricky, tricky.

You know, the problem with LPs is that you tend to do stupid shit while looking for screencaps. Also, it takes longer to reach for the print screen button than it does to jump off of a falling platform.
So! Since I'm over halfway through the game now, I think I'm going to conditionally post runs that don't make it all the way past floor 11, on the condition that they show some interesting game feature I haven't showcased yet.
