Chapter 6: On Top of the World
Part 4: Science!

Into the crypts!
I bet nothing bad is in here.

I WAS WRONG HUH

The Deep Mass in the front is tough, non-large, and has a lot of resistances, making it a pain to take down.
The Vampyre Child is basically a lite version of Cristoff.

The only real strategy for the bastard is hitting it a whole lot to raise its damage ratio. The Child is slowly degenerating on its own, although it can heal just like its boss version.
It's notable that, while some of the enemies are undead here, Swordfaith is again frustratingly unusable, since we're underground.

More undeads! These ones are mummies.

The mummies have the nasty ability of poisonous melee attacks. They can burn down a lot of HP at an alarming pace.

Fightin'!

Loot!

Okay! That's over now.

Now!
Time for the hardest zone in the game.

But first, some more generic fighting!

Night Gales can only be harmed by magic, and Blue Bittens have the ability to temporarily become invincible. One hit from anything kills the shield, and it becomes hurtable again.

There are some older enemies here, too!

Bittens have the nasty habit of using magic on whoever's in the back row - better keep PyanPau out of that spot.

And now
Suffering.

And not before time. Fighitng uphill is such a chore. This will be a lot less unpleasant on the way down, when we have gravity on our side.

Wait, do you two hear that? A low pitched rumble. It's getting louder. Where is it coming from?

It's beneath us. The glacier is collapsing! The fighting must have shaken it deeper than we thought. Run, both of you! Run for the edge and don't look back!

Welcome!
Now begins the horrible sequence of timed battles.

As you head right, the timer increases. As time passes, it slowly decreases.
This is why I was level grinding before.

No time to spare for healing.
No, we go ALL OUT.

GOGOGOGOGOGO

NO TIME
FUCKING NIGHT SHADES KEEP EVADING MY ATTACKS

I'm doing it!
I'm beating the goddamn timer!

If a Shaman spawns in the front row, I can take it down with one wave of attacks from full health.
This is the power of proper preparation!

Holy shit, this is the best I've ever done at this zone!

Focus all fire on the shaman if there is one, use magic to take down Shades, anti-large attacks to wipe out the yetis...

And... wow!
I was expecting that to be hard as hell, but I kind of dominated it.

And now, to our destination!

Trying not to get ourselves killed, mostly. You really should consider a change of address. By the way, I hope you weren't too fond of that glacier on the south slope. I think we broke it on the way up.

We have an urgent request, Director. We need to make use of your facilities. It's a matter of the utmost importance to national security.

Yes, yes. Of course. Why else would you be here? Everybody wants something urgent from the Institute. Where are my manners, allow me to make introductions.

I am Director Jensen, and this is the Lereftese Institute for Higher Learning. The finest minds in the nation gathered together in one place by our governors.
Independent and isolated we are wasted, but, working here together, our collective genius can achieve great things.
This place has been the repository for scientific thought in Lereftain for as long as anybody can remember, bringing you such marvellous scientifict advances as... um...

How embarassing, my memory fails me temporarily. We have various libraries at the back of the Institute documenting our progress. Of course, I can't quite remember the last time we accessed them...

You're welcome to take a look around our halls, so long as you don't disturb any of our members, or more importantly, touch their equipment. What facility were you hoping to make use of?

We need some time in your Observatory to take a look out over Yaegara. We may need you to confirm our observations in writing and seal them for delivery to Parliament.

I would be happy to help. Are you from the government, then? You don't look very official.

We don't get visitors very often. You're the most exciting thing that's happened here all year. In truth, no disrespect to the other staff, this place can get rather boring!

The company of other academics can be little tiresome at times. They spend more time talking to their equipment than each other.
Most of them are consumed by their research to the exclusion of all else. We have enough trouble getting some to eat, let alone socialize.

So it's a pleasure to welcome any guests through our doors, especially when their numbers include such a lovely young lady.
Once your business here is concluded, might I interest you in staying a while longer? The weather outside is frightful, and we have a warm fire, electrifying conversation and several kegs of untapped ale to offer.

Death by dismemberment, or death by boredom? It's a tough choice, but I think I'll take my chances back out on the slopes.

I'm sensing a slight lack of enthusiasm. It's alright, I've become rather good t reading rejection. Please, don't blame a lonely old fellow for asking.

I'll call over someone to help you to the Observatory, so you can be on your way.

PIMLICO!
He's a little slow. Probably finishing up his latest experiment. Give him time.
PIMLI...

Ouch! There's no need to shout, Director, I can hear you quite well. What do you...

Oh my, intruders! We must call the Rakari! Quickly, Director, behind me. I can shield your body from their hail of bullets with my own!

Calm down, Draedrum. These people are only here to use the Observatory. They must have had a long and difficult trek up the mountain at this time of year. Please show them some courtesy.

But look at them! They could be thieves, or spies or crazed murderers, just looking for an easy kill!

Look at the way that woman is staring at me with those piercing eyes, as if she'd sooner kill me than talk to me. I've never seen such a shifty-looking bunch of malcontents!

You've not seen anyone from outside the Institute in almost four years now, Draedrum. You really must stop worrying like this, it isn't good for your health. Now, be a good man and lend these people a hand.

Yes, Director. Right this way...

Don't worry about Pimlico too much. He's not much of a 'people person', but he's out finest observationist. Just follow his directions and you'll be fine.
Oh, and don't be frightened if our resident Rakari sneaks up on you. I think he's a little shy, but he's a nice fellow, really.
He oversees the Institute and keeps the beastly local wildlife out. THis place really couldn't function without him.

Science!

But somehow it keeps slipping from my mind, like sand through my fingers. Why can't I remember?
I can't imagine why I was thinking of leaving the Institute. I must stay here until my inspiration returns.

If we have, then we've wasted our time. You have none. We should have brought that blasted Yaegaran agent up here with us. It'd be the safest place in the country to put him.

Please, pay no attention to my colleague. WE're not here to cause any trouble, I assure you. In fact, we're trying to stop some before it gets out of hand.

For the sake of the nation, we need to make some observations with your fine telescope here.

Hmmph. The Director has instructed me to assist you, and so I shall. I'd do anything for him.

Alright, just give us a few minutes with the equipment, and...

Gods no, don't touch him! He's a very delicate scientific instrument, far too sensitive to withstand molestation by your sweaty, clumsy hands.

I'm sorry. It doesn't look too difficult to operate.

Yes, that is a common misconception. Working an instrument of this size requires years of exerience and a delicate touch. Now tell me so that we can get this over with. What did you want to observe?

First, the city of Porto Vale here in Lereftain. Then after that, the two cities of Silareth and Pontara in Yaegara.

Very well. Do you intend to tell me what I should be looking for? Or is that up to me to guess? This is such a ridiculous waste of our...

Merciful heavens! I can see it. The city looks as though it were trapped inside a giant's snow-globe. I've never seen such a heavily localized cold front. There are a thousand tiny lights flickering around it. Cannon fire.
Is this what you expectd to see?

Yes. We were there not more than a few days ago. Please, could you check the other two cities in Yaegara? Everything depends upon their state.

Yes, I can see. I don't even need my Medean atlas to find them. There's two similar phenomena across the border, titanic columns of red Cumulonimbus, alone in a beautiful clear sky.
Fascinating. I must get Nordal up here, he's crazy about meteorological oddities. What does this mean?

War, if we don't hurry. It appears Jaques may have been correct. Doctor, if you please, we need the Director to verify these observations in writing and give us his sealed signature.

Alright. Wait here and I shall go fetch him. Don't touch anything whilst I'm gone. In fact, don't even move. I shall know it if you have. I have eyes like a snowhawk and a photographic memory.

Director, more intruders! Quickly, flee for the safety of the tea-room! I'll use my carcass to trip them and aid your escape!

My dear Doctor, you really must lay your paranoia to rest. THese people are guests, and we should treat them as such. They must have had a hard trek up the Mane, and they deserve to be greeted with open arms...

Enough talking. Gas the facility and retrieve them quickly, before the Rakari returns. We cannot risk losing the collaborators in a confrontation. Time is running out.

To be continued!
