Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Scene 8: The Umbrella
<< | ^^ | >>

Ushiromiya Jessica
Krauss and Natsuhi's daughter. In the absence of any irregularities, it is thought that she will eventually inherit the headship of the Ushiromiya family (or rather, her husband will). However, she seems to have no interest in all of this.
She was born with weak bronchi, and is sometimes assailed by sudden asthma attacks.

Yup, they weren't kidding about that typhoon.
Word is it's going to last all day tomorrow, hard enough to stop the boats.

George made arrangements to be gone from work on Monday. Battler won't be able to go to school, a fact that he's fine with. Jessica is used to staying home when the boats are down, but it probably just means studying at home.

Jessica would love to leave the island and live somewhere else, but she has to learn the skills necessary to become the successor and inherit the estate. She's not wild about it.
But hey, just a few more months and she'll graduate!

No sign of Maria. Nothing good on TV. It's been a dull time ever since they got back to the guest house.

Kanon comes to inform the cousins that food is ready. Finally, something to do.

Battler had assumed that Rosa had taken Maria back with her to the mansion. Apparently, this was not the case.

Elsewhere, Rosa wakes up. The stress of her earlier, uh, activities had left her exhausted, so she took a nap.
The rain and the wind continue relentlessly outside.

But Rosa already knows. She knows Maria well.
Of course she isn't at the guest house.

She's still out in the garden.

Kanon didn't see her on the way over, and she's not at the mansion.
The cousins and Rosa both run out into the rain.

The rain is coming down like the wrath of God.
The four of them search desperately for the missing child.

Battler finds Maria at last. However, she's holding something she didn't have before.

Oh good. She hasn't been freezing to death. She had an umbrella.

Her energy drained by her hour-long search, Rosa is able to convince Maria to let it go for today. They'll try again to find it tomorrow.

For now, we must all hurry to the mansion.

On the way back, they get to talking about Maria's new umbrella. She says she didn't bring it with her out here. She borrowed it.
Wait.
Borrowed from who?

Rosa asks again, and gets the same answer. She decides to drop it for now.

Kinzo and Nanjo's chess game is interrupted by the family, trying to talk him into coming out of his study.

Of course, he won't. Nanjo eventually gives up, and leaves him there alone.

At least this time, Kinzo doesn't fly into a rage. He just ignores Krauss's pounding.
To him, dinner is meaningless. The game has already begun.

So, just as with lunch, dinner begins without the host.
Now, Rosa has something to bring up!

She figured that it would be easier to ask here than to get Maria to explain properly.

Eva, Hideyoshi, Rudolf, Kyrie, and Krauss didn't do it. They were caught up in their financial battle.
All of them were together up until the start of dinner.

Gohda didn't do it. He was busy preparing dinner, and didn't have a moment to go outside.

Kumasawa and Shannon didn't do it. They were preparing rooms for tonight's rainstorm, in case people would prefer to stay in the mansion rather than go outside to reach the guest house.

Natsuhi didn't do it. She's been resting in her room.

George, Battler and Jessica didn't do it. They were watching TV in the guest house the whole time. Kanon came for them, and hadn't seen Maria.

Nanjo and Kinzo didn't do it. They were in the study, playing chess.

Nobody will claim responsibility for the small act of kindness.
Hideyoshi takes the obvious route, asking Maria directly.

Of course.

Kumasawa and Shannon ask Genji and Kanon on their way out.

Genji didn't do it. Kanon didn't, either.
Thus, we are left with two possibilities.

One of the eighteen people here is lying...

...or there is a nineteenth person on the island.
