Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Scene 10: The Lovers
<< | ^^ | >>

Ushiromiya Rudolf
Kinzo's third child. Along with his sister, Eva, he intends to make his voice heard during the family conference to prevent their oldest sibling, Krauss, from keeping all of their father's wealth for himself.
His former life, Asumu, passed away six years ago, and he married his current wife, Kyrie, shortly after that.

So, Rudolf think someone is going to kill him.

What? What the hell was that all about?

So, we turn the board around. Think of it from dad's perspective!
Kyrie thinks that he wants to talk about something, but lacks the courage to bring it up, so he wants someone to chase him down and ask him about it.

Battler leaves it to Kyrie, after thanking her for lifting his dour mood.

Beyond the parlor, Natsuhi thinks back to the day's discussions.
Beatrice will give everything to whoever solves the riddle. What this is, to the rest of the family, is a crack in Krauss's armor.
It doesn't matter that Beatrice obviously isn't real. The seal was Kinzo's, so this is Kinzo's will.

In her mind, there's no way that anyone other than Kinzo could be behind the letter.
Kinzo is giving the younger siblings a chance to fight back, so that all four of them have a chance at the inheritance. As Krauss's wife, she doesn't intend to let them do it.

In the previous battle, Natsuhi had been cast aside by Krauss. Enraged, she had demanded to know why she couldn't be of use to him.
By way of answer, he took her to a locked room she had never before been allowed to enter.

On the table is something that takes Natsuhi's breath away.

An enormous gold ingot, lacking in any seal indicating the foundry that produced it.
No, wait. If you look closely, there's a very subtle imprint.

Here it is. The proof that the gold is real.
The gold that Kinzo received from Beatrice is real.

This is why Krauss is afraid of that letter. He knows that the prize is real, and thusly that the threat of someone finding it exists.

Natsuhi is distraught for a different reason. All this time, Krauss knew, but he never saw fit to trust her with the knowledge.

And it doesn't look like this isn't going to change moving forward, either.

Ushiromiya Natsuhi. The borrowed womb of the Ushiromiya family. Rejected even by her own husband. Disliked by her own daughter.

But even so, she will fight. She will ensure that Krauss is head, and then Jessica after him.
Natsuhi had had no choice in marrying into this family. She won't let the same fate befall Jessica.

Natsuhi's misery is interrupted by her daughter.

Upon seeing the exhaustion on her mother's face, Jessica's contempt weakens. She remembers something George told her earlier: That despite all their flaws, her parents are doing what they think is best for her, in their own way.

So, she does her best to be understanding. Natsuhi's temper is short, though, and she knows it, so she tries to get Jessica to carry on.

Doing her best regardless, Natsuhi gives Jessica a few words of kindness.

And as one last awkward gesture of reconciliation, Jessica passes on the charm Maria gave her.
Natsuhi accepts it, and goes back to her rest.

When Jessica returns, George and Battler are watching TV, and Maria is asleep on the couch. It's pretty late for her.

No matter how long they plan to stay up, it's about time to go back to the guest house.

Rosa returns to find the sleeping Maria. She leaves her in the care of the cousins as they head back. The adults will be arguing long into the night.

George can't carry Maria and an umbrella at the same time, so Shannon comes with us to the guest house.

The cousins advance through the rain to get back to the guest house.

Shannon swings by the guest house's servant room to check her schedule. Maria is plopped into her bed. The cousins move on to playing cards.

In the meantime, Shannon discovers she isn't the only one here.
Gohda has night shift in the mansion. Shannon and Kanon have night shift in the guest house. Kumasawa and Genji are spending the night in the guest house.
Nearly all of the schedule has been reversed between the two buildings.

The order came from Krauss, who has good reason to mistrust the servants, considering what happened today.
Krauss wants to keep Kinzo's minions as far as possible from the rest of the family during this final family conference.

Kanon and Shannon are left to deal with the guest house for tonight. Shannon confesses she's a little happy about it.

Real convincing, Shannon.

Kanon is quick to remind Shannon that she has duties that prevent her from playing with the others. It is unbefitting behavior for furniture.

Genji, however, encourages it. Kanon still refuses - it is good for kids to play, but he isn't a kid. He's furniture.
Shannon pretends to be people, but she's furniture, too. That contradiction will only bring her pain.

Battler, meanwhile, has just learned something shocking!

Yeah, just in case it wasn't obvious, there's something going on between George and Shannon.

Let's go see what they're doing!
They're talking about George's work, apparently.

This relationship isn't one that can be talked about publicly. George is in a position of relative power, and Shannon is a lowly servant orphan.
But, well, love doesn't pay much attention to details, does it?

The subject moves to Shannon - no, Sayo's future. That's her real name, after all.
George says that Shannon has been living her live as a young person, as if it was going to be the rest of her life. She hasn't considered what she'll do sa an adult.

One of their rules: When alone, no honorifics. Or at least, no -sama nonsense. Sayo has trouble with this.

George is building up to something. It will take him a while.
Eventually, he gets something out of his pocket to show her.

Yup.

It's a ring.
She doesn't accept it from him until he orders her to.

Tomorrow, she'll have to answer properly.
Whether or not she will wear this ring.

He isn't going to try and order her to do anything else. Tomorrow, she will wear or not wear it of her own will.

Despite his teasing, George understands why Shannon might want to be alone right now. They do not return together.

October 4th, 1986, 11:00 PM

Shannon is back from her clandestine garden meeting!
She's supposed to be in the guest house, but she tells Gohda that she was ordered to come over by Genji. He's happy for the help.
The siblings are still arguing.

Division of labor! By which I mean Gohda making Shannon do his job for him.
She's happy to do it, though, because in her current state, Gohda might suspect something's up if she hangs around.

Shannon overhears the vitriol from the arguing siblings. She mustn't be discovered by them, since Krauss ordered her to go to the guest house.
So instead, she goes to patrol the halls, checking for open windows or doors. It's not a difficult task, since, after all, there's nobody here but the family.

...Right?

She doesn't see anything beyond a brief flicker out of the corner of her eye. However, she's thinking of an old ghost story now.
Rokkenjima has a second master during the night.

The first day is over.
