Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Scene 20: The Epitaph
<< | ^^ | >>

Found in the boiler room with a weapon resembling an ice-pick rammed into his chest.
How presumptuous for such lowly furniture.

Nobody has eaten dinner. With the increasing pile of bodies, there is the very real danger that it's been poisoned.

However, fatigue and hunger are setting in. The group travels together to the kitchen to get some canned food before going to the study.

The doorknob to the study has a scorpion crest on it. Scorpions ward off evil magic. Even Beatrice would have a hard time breaking through this door.

Jessica is beyond done with all this witch bullshit.
Genji unlocks the door. Eight people enter.

Kinzo's study is buried in mountains of occult nonsense.
The door closes, locking automatically.

The door is locked, and both keys are inside the study. No open window. No secret passages.
This is now a closed room.

Now, to wait.

Nanjo never got to finish his last chess game. Kinzo eluded him to the very end.

While passing the time, the eight debate who Beatrice could be.
Witch or human, everything revolves around the mighty Beatrice.

We keep getting interrupted. Finally, time to read the letter.
The contents of the letter are one sentence.

Praise my name.
What does it mean?

If the writer of these letters is Beatrice, then she claims to be Kinzo's oldest confidante.
Despite being pressed, Genji refuses to comment one way or the other on what this could mean.

When Kinzo's wife was still alive, she strongly suspected him of cheating on her.
Genji does acknowledge that Beatrice lived, and Kinzo loved her more than he did his own wife.

But that Beatrice has been dead for decades.
Perhaps her death was what drove Kinzo mad.

All of it, everything for thirty years, just for once chance to see her again.

The true reason all the servants went along with the ghost story.
By acting as if Beatrice lived on, Kinzo's pain could be lessened.

George can admit it. If he could use black magic to revive Shannon, he wouldn't hesitate.
Maria is quick to remind everyone that they'll be able to meet their loved ones very soon.

Battler wavers again. If Kinzo gave up half his life searching for her, then why not believe in her a little?

Time passes as they talk about Kinzo and the life they never knew he led.

There is no word of Kinzo having a child wtih Beatrice. That would've been a convenient culprit.

Or maybe there IS something to it.
Kinzo collects many of his servants - Kanon and Shannon among them - from the same orphanage. This has led to unsavory rumors, such as how he uses them for human sacrifices.
The word "sacrifices" nags at Battler's mind.
He's heard it somewhere recently.

That's right. It took him this long to figure it out.

On the first twilight, offer the six chosen by the key as sacrifices.
On the second twilight, those who remain shall tear apart the two who are close.
On the third twilight, those who remain shall praise my noble name.

On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill.
On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.

On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive.

On the tenth twilight, the journey shall end, and you shall reach the village of gold.

That's when Natsuhi realizes the contradiction from that morning. Someone scratched at her door, but didn't come in. Supposedly, this was because of the scorpion amulet she got from Jessica.
But she put it on the inside of the door.
So how had they known it was there?

Every death has been in accordance with the epitaph.
Eva and Hideyoshi were the two who are close.
Kinzo's head was gouged and killed.
Kanon's chest was gouged and killed.

And there's still three more sacrifices needed.
But even that won't be enough.

Everyone will die.

And then, after Beatrice returns, they will be resurrected.

Genji and Kumasawa both claim to know nothing.
However, one thing is clear: The person carrying this out was not Kinzo. Kinzo is dead.

Considering the first letter, and the presence of Kinzo's seal, it's almost like a joint project between Kinzo and Beatrice.
Beatrice is someone Kinzo trusted.

Everyone was focused on the epitaph.
So nobody saw it happen.

Natsuhi still holds the second envelope in her hand.
A third letter has arrived from the Golden Witch.
