Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Final Scene: The Golden Land
<< | ^^ | >>

BGM: System 0

Natsuhi raises her rifle at the servants.
Someone put that letter on the table just now. It wasn't Natsuhi. It wasn't Battler. The most likely answer is clear: It was Kinzo's minions.
She demands Battler read the letter.

The final ultimatum from the Golden Witch.

At the time Natsuhi confirmed the lack of a letter, Jessica, George and Battler were already at the portrait. That leaves four possible suspects.
Genji. Kumasawa. Nanjo. Maria.
One of them is Beatrice.

Every crime is solvable.
Each murder could have been committed by human hands.
If only we knew how.

There's a limit to trust. One of those four put that letter there. That is undeniable.

But none of them will admit it.
Natsuhi comes to believe that all four of them are in it together.

Beatrice can't be seen.
Unless you believe, she can't be seen.

As the surviving head of the Ushiromiya family, Natsuhi denies Beatrice with all her heart.
There is no witch.
There are only those you can trust, and those you can't trust.

Ties of family or friendship mean nothing. Only evidence is absolute.

Natsuhi doesn't say it herself, but there is only one possible outcome.
The four are banished from the study.

Kumasawa is terrified at the prospect that one of the four of them is the culprit. Maria is happy to obey.
After all, Beatrice is kind to those who show her respect.

Genji gives Natsuhi the master keys. He also gives her the ring of all the keys to the mansion.
Natsuhi had planned to let Genji retire after Kinzo passed away. To treat him like this fills her with guilt, but she doesn't flinch.

Before she leaves, Battler has something to return to Maria.

He lied before.
Battler had the scorpion charm with him the whole time.

Relaxing from the tension of the standoff, Battler notices something he missed.
The third letter had a second page.

There's no way to tell what this means. The only one who might know was already chased out of the room.
All that there is to do is to wait until morning.

Will anyone survive that long?

October 5th, 1986, 11:30 PM

The guilt over the last act of exile hangs over the room. It's not hard to get to thinking.
If they had accepted the existence of the witch, then all of this distrust would have been unnecessary.

Everyone is quietly willing the night to end.

Apparently Jessica liked Kanon. George thinks so, at least.

For lack of anything better to do, Battler roots through Kinzo's collection, trying to find that magic circle.

Maria is easily the weakest of the four exiled. If she is killed, then it's not hard to figure out who's to blame.
It's the four people sitting in this bastion of safety.

Natsuhi will bear the burden herself. Anything that happens from now on is her responsibility alone.

George thinks the reason Maria is obsessed with witches is her mother. Rosa and Maria had a difficult relationship at the best of times.
To Maria, a witch is someone who uses her magic to make everyone happy. It's someone who can make everything all right.
Someone who can heal the pain of not being loved by your own mother.

Well, hang on.
Let's turn it around one more time.

Why would they have put the letter there? It was the same as confessing they were the culprit.
But if the culprit was someone outside the room...

...Then it becomes a perfect gambit to lure people out from the study.

It's looking more and more likely. The fate that awaits the four outside.
But Natsuhi is resolute. She will protect the people in front of her, no matter the cost.

Natsuhi has retained her composure under incredible stress. It may only be because of her that anyone is still alive.

Jessica is tired of all of this. Why don't we just let them back in?
Why don't we accept that the culprit is the witch, Beatrice, and bring everyone together again?

Oh, hey.

Well, shit. It worked.

But if that's true... then the ones they're after are the four who left the room.

The phone rings.

The phones being down is probably the work of the culprit.
Which means that this phone call is probably also from the culprit.

At first, it sounds like the phone line is dead.

Very faintly, though, one can hear a single voice. Someone singing.
Maria's voice.

Who's making this call?
Why aren't they saying anything?
What's going on?

Natsuhi tries calling the police, but outside lines are still down.

There's no choice. If Maria is in trouble...
Battler wields a three-pronged candlestick. Everyone prepares to leave the study.

The witch has lured the last four out of the study.

Whoever the culprit is, they must be strong to have killed like they have. That, or they have some kind of stake-firing weapon.
The four move through the mansion, back to back, not letting any direction go uncovered.

First floor. The parlor is across the hall.
Battler can hear Maria's voice.

The parlor door is locked. It takes time and causes noise trying to unlock it.
The door opens. The four prepare for battle.

But battle does not come.

BGM: Golden Slaughterer
On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill.

On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.

On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.

Maria stands in the corner, facing the wall, singing to herself.

She is acting just like she always has.
Beatrice did it, she says.

The 19th person. Beatrice.
Maria says she doesn't know how it was done.

Everyone was alive. Genji locked the door.
Then, Beatrice came in the form of a cloud of butterflies, and told Maria to sing until her work was done.

Beatrice required three more sacrifices. Maria was protected by the scorpion charm.

It's beyond all rational explanation now. Battler refuses to believe in Beatrice out of pure spite.

We're really bad at this whole sticking together thing.

Natsuhi use Battler's candlestick to wedge the door shut.
The four cousins are trapped.

Natsuhi, meanwhile, is elsewhere. She has a bone to pick.

To the very end, she defies Beatrice.

But Beatrice doesn't care. She's become very powerful.
Powerful enough that even Natsuhi can see her.

Natsuhi and Beatrice are the two remaining people with the right to succeed Kinzo.
So, witch or human, this ends now.

Beatrice can only accept such a fine challenge.

Natsuhi takes aim, and pulls the trigger.

In the distance, the sound of thunder.

How many people are on Rokkenjima?

Well, to be frank, I don't think the answer matters anymore.

18 is wrong. 19 is also wrong.

Very soon, it will be one.

And that one is not human.

On the ninth twilight, the Golden Witch shall be revived,

And none will be left alive.

A world where everything lost is returned.

The border between days strikes. The border between worlds.

She's here right now. The one that portrait was drawn in the likeness of.

Even now, Battler refuses to acknowledge Beatrice.
But it's too late.

The time is up.
When time runs out, the witch wins by default.

The witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
One shall be all the gold from the Golden Land.
One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
One shall be even the resurrection of lost love.
One shall be to put the witch to sleep for all time.
