Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 5 Scene 22: The Closet

<< | ^^ | >>

BGM: Minute Darkness

The culprit, or one of his accomplices, must be close, to observe her. At least one of the servants is probably working for him - hence the trick with the "fall" card inside Natsuhi's room.

No, that's not true, is it?

You did tell it to someone.

Does this mean that Shannon is the culprit? Or, at the very least, an accomplice?

Kinzo once told Natsuhi that anger is the fastest cure for fear. She recognizes that as the meaning behind her anger, and forces herself to calm down. Knowing the name of one of the enemies could become a valuable weapon.

The time in this closet has given Natsuhi a chance to prepare her counterattack.

Someone enters. She hears a voice muttering to himself - it's Hideyoshi.

Hideyoshi enters the room, locking the door and setting the chain behind him.

If Hideyoshi opens the closet door right now, would she be able to escape?

Probably not, with the door locked and the chain set.

It sounds like he's closing the shutters on the windows.

Actually, this makes sense. If he wanted to take a break, it would be safer to use a guest room here than to go all the way to the guest house with a killer on the loose.

Probably not. This is probably an unexpected complication.

Furthermore, it's probably going to make her more safe.

Nope, can't do that. Krauss might be killed if you do that.

After a moment to adjust, Natsuhi is startled to discover that the weeping voice is Hideyoshi's.

Hideyoshi has acted firm and strong for Eva's sake, but he needs to mourn, too.

Natsuhi still isn't allowed the solace of tears. Her daughter is dead, but her husband is still alive.

When this ends, Battler will inherit whatever is left of the Ushiromiya fortune. However, the honor and glory of the family will die.

Natsuhi is the last head of the Ushiromiya family.

In the room, the sounds of a struggle.

Even at a time like this, is it safe to leave the closet?

At that moment, there is the sound of the door opening, and the chain pulling tight. Someone tried to open the door, not noticing the chain.

It's Eva. She's outside, and Hideyoshi isn't opening the door.

The room returns to silence.

Try as she might, Natsuhi can't sense anyone else in the room.

Is the room empty? Is the culprit waiting for her to come out?

Eva and Gohda are back. Gohda cuts the chain.

Now everyone is here.

Natsuhi hides in the closet as everyone pours in, shocked at the horrible news.

The culprit is in the mansion.

But there's something even stranger. The doors and windows are all sealed.

The bed isn't even visible from the crack in the door.

What if they escaped through the window, and somehow closed the shutters from the outside?

BGM: Smile-less Soiree

The chain was set, so they had to cut it to enter. The window shutters were all down. The windows are locked from the inside.

Erika, surprisingly, has no interest in the corpse. She doesn't mind them moving it wherever they want.

Hideyoshi is carried out, wrapped in white sheets stained red with blood.

The windows were locked. The chain was set. It was impossible to get into this room.

This couldn't even be the work of Beatrice. The epitaph has been solved...

As Erika glances into the crime scene, her eyes stop on the closed closet.

A hand comes down on her shoulder.

Rudolf urges them to hurry. Erika reluctantly leaves.

All that time, and nobody found Natsuhi.

She emerges from the closet.

Time to return to her room and pretend to have been sleeping this whole time.

Quietly as possible, Natsuhi moves through the mansion. If she's seen now--

BGM: Fishy Aroma

Erika is here because she decided to investigate the guest room. Not that Natsuhi knows anything about that, right?

Natsuhi was in her room again, right? So once again, she can't prove her alibi.

She had planned to use checking her lock as an excuse to retreat to her room, but Erika tells her straight that Hideyoshi is dead. Now she has no choice but to follow her and join the group.

Natsuhi isn't the culprit. No matter how suspicious things get, that truth should protect her.

Erika invokes her detective's authority to call an assembly. Everyone must stay and hear her out.

Kanon closes the door and locks it. Nobody can leave the parlor.

Oh, fast! Wow, so you've figured out the culprit already? We've barely gotten to any of the crimes, right? You could've just let me kill a few more and gathered a few clues yourself!
All right, Lambda, gather all of the pieces. Now we're getting to the most interesting part. Let's both enjoy it to the fullest.
Well, let's see... Why don't you show me what you've got?

It is quite an early challenge. To think that she's already managed to get a winning hand at this stage...
Normally, you can win by just claiming that a witch exists, but with Natsuhi and Kinzo, we've got a lot we need to protect this time. Sounds like this fight'll be a pain.
That's no problem at all! I won't let them do as they please with my golden island any more! Bring it on, Lady Bernkastel! Furudo Erika!

BGM: Voiceless

Facing a board where Bernkastel has already identified the culprit, Battler will finally rejoin the game.

...I think we can say that Battler has gained the power to never again surrender in the game about who the culprit is.
...
By the 4th game, you sent him all the messages. In other words... at this time, Battler is capable of realizing the truth at any moment. However, he is naive. Therefore, even if the games continue at this rate a hundred times, he won't solve it for all eternity. He'll just wander forever like someone trying to find the blue bird of happiness.

The game is being abused right now, but that may be necessary. Battler's naivety and Beato's hesitation must end.

...
Those two will bring you either victory or defeat. But no matter how it goes, that result has already been filled with compassion. You should understand that as well by now.

I am Virgilia. I have guided him through Purgatory and brought him to you at its peak. You are Beatrice. You must choose whether to take this hand and rise up to heaven or grab him and fall into hell.

Fly. Fly from the cliffs of Purgatory. Take with you the regrets caused by your fleeting, fragile, foolish hopes and open up Pandora's box. Are you scared of opening it?
