Let's Play Mother 3

Chapter 0: Prologue
Welcome to the World of...

Welcome to my second Let's Play in this journal! Today I am starting Mother 3.

And with no further ado, let's get this game started.

Befor anything else, the game asks us to do a bit of traditional customization, naming all of my family members, my favorite food, and my favorite thing. I go with defaults for everything.

Now, to explain a little, this LP is going to have something my previous LP didn't:

Complementary Videos!

CLAUS
Get up so we can play!
Get up, already! The Dragos brought their babies over! They're really cute! Hurry up!!

And so the game gives us control of Lucas for the first time.

Here's our status screen. Level 1, no items, no equipment. Lucas, after all, is just a normal kid.
I get dressed, go downstairs, talk to mom, and head outside.

It's bright out here!
The fellow on the right is Alec, Lucas's grandfather. He can be chatted with, as can the cows, neither to any significance. Let's go find Claus.

On the way, though, we meet someone who will be of great importance to us throughout the game.

FROG
Memories are remembered with other memories, and in turn become memories themselves. If you don't take care to preserve your memories, you'll forget them.
So, please tell us frogs your memories of everything so far... that is what we refer to as "Saving."
Now, then...
*hop*
Save your game?

Frogs are the save points of Mother 3. I will, accordingly, be encountering them all over the place. Even the weirdest locales will be populated with frogs.

There's Claus!

Knocking over dinosaurs!

CLAUS
I've been play-fighting with Drago all morning. You should play too, Lucas.

[Yes No]

CLAUS
Here, try ramming into Drago.

ALEC
Claus! Lucas still doesn't know how to ram into things yet.

ALEC
And then hold that B button for a second, and then let it go. Doing this will let you "dash". And by using this "dash" ability, you can ram into that Drago there!

After what is, at maybe four sentences, one of the longest tutorials in the game, Lucas is knocking over dinosaurs with the best of them.

However, it would appear that someone is here to rain on our Drago-bashing parade!

MOLE CRICKET
I'm gonna wipe the floor with all of you! Get in my way and you're in for a world of pain!

Thus, we begin the game's first battle!
Combat is very simple right now - all each character can do is bash, guard, run, or use an item. Considering that we can't run from this encounter, and we have no items, our tactical choice is pretty clear.

In a slight update to Earthbound's visuals, Mother 3 has bouncing damage numbers when you smack people. It's very visually satisfying.
Since the Mole Cricket is only doing about 4 damage per attack, and we're doing over twice that, and we outnumber him...

We make short work of our mighty foe. +2 experience points!

MOLE CRICKET
If you'd like, I could train you personally sometime.
Next time we meet, it'll be at the big Mole Cricket Hole Stadium! I look forward to seein' you there!
...Bro.

Mighty warrior Hinawa.

HINAWA
Lunch is ready, everyone. I made your favorites, boys. Omelets!

CLAUS
Ooh! Lunch, lunch! Omelets!!

HINAWA
You too, dad.

(As everyone heads to the house, Alec hangs behind...)

ALEC
Now, then...

ALEC
Talk to frogs. That is how you "save". It's not too tedious or troublesome, so you should talk to frogs whenever you can. Plus, saving is absolutely free.
Now then, it's time for me to return to the story.

CLAUS
Then your favorite is the same as ours? We make a good match!

HINAWA
After we're done eating, we need to get ready to go home. We have to go through the forest to get back, so we'll need to leave early.

ALEC
Don't be silly. I bet the kids could make it here on their own, it's that safe.
I bet even you could handle it, Lucas! Hahahaha!

After this conversation, Hinawa goes outside, with a letter:

My father seems sad to say goodbye to his grandchildren after seeing them for the first time in so long, but we should be home by this evening.

I had forgotten how nice and refreshing the mountain air is. You're always covered in the smell of sheep back in Tazmily village, so I really wish you could have been here to take in this air.

The next time we visit, let's ask one of our neighbors to tend to the sheep so we can all come up here as a family.

Claus, Lucas and I were always thinking about you. When we get home this evening, I'll start cooking some of your favorite Omelets right away.

With love, your dearest Hinawa

Our first sign of anything unusual. The shadow of something flies by, emanating strange music as it passes.
