A trial is coming to a close.

The head inquisitor passes down her sentence.
The target of her wrath: An unassuming maid.

The maid pleads again and again, but the important points have already been covered.

That leaves the whydunnit, but who cares? Motives, the Inquisitor says, are unnecessary to mysteries...

Lord BATTLER holds a majestic book in one hand.

Battler hesitates, kisses the book, and lays it gently in the coffin.

No more time.
The man runs.

A mystery with no motive isn't a mystery. It's propaganda.

Battler speaks a few final words, but only in his heart.

No words exist to convey Battler's feelings at this moment.

All her arguments fall on deaf ears. Her feelings are irrelevant. Only her alibi carries weight, and it has been disproven.

The motive can be determined after the fact.
By force, if necessary.

As she cries in vain, the trial is interrupted.

BGM: Rebirth

The Inquisition is not pleased by this interruption. The whydunnit is unnecessary! This woman's guilt has already been settled!

Without a motive, even the slightest uncertainty in anyone's alibi becomes a hole in everything.
But why? If she isn't the culprit, why would she lie about her alibi?

One man stands alone against the Inquisition.
However, he has a weapon of his own.

A rule that isn't on Knox's Decalogue.

Until the details are properly ironed out, he'll be taking the arrest warrant.

The job of the Inquisition is to kill evil witches. However, that doesn't mean they can hurt the innocent as they please.

Gradually becoming aware that this strange man is protecting her, the maid offers her tentative gratitude.

Even when exposing the truth is your job, are there still truths that one must not expose?
