Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 7 Scene 17: The Last Tale - A New Element

<< | ^^ | >>

Life continues to be busy on Rokkenjima.

Shannon has many years of experience at this point, and is in charge of the other Fukuin House servants. However, with more authority comes steeper expectations.

From somewhere, the faint sound of wind.

In what might or might not be a dream, someone speaks to Shannon.

How can you not tire of this dreary life?

When Shannon opens her eyes, she finds herself in an otherworldly rose garden.

The roses are gold, of course, as are the butterflies dancing about.

A golden butterfly welcomes her to the garden, taking human form as it does.

While this woman seems to recognize her, Shannon has no memory of them meeting in the past, a fact she hastily apologizes for.

Not quite. There is more than one Beatrice, after all.

This isn't exactly a dream, but it's like one. While Shannon slept, Beatrice beckoned her soul to this garden.

The tea is accompanied by cakes and scones. A human's tea party cannot compare to the entertainment of a witch.

The rose petals also make an unparalleled jam to go with the scones.

The two sort-of friends reminisce about old times that only one of them remembers.

This tea party's purpose is to show Shannon how powerful Beatrice has become, and to spoil her rotten with anything she desires as a reward for all her hard work.

Why return to the human world? It can't possibly compare to this one.

Still, Shannon insists that she must return to the world of humans. She's human, after all.

There is no reason either of them have to be human. Shannon could remain here for all eternity, blissfully content in the Golden Paradise.

But it's not her world.

Beatrice can't understand this outcome. What could possibly be binding Shannon to her old world so dearly that she can't abandon it for this one? Is there something more fun in that world than all the pleasures of the Golden Paradise?

Shannon's smile doesn't falter. Beatrice can't find a way around it.

In her heart, Beatrice probably already knows.

After all, why did she invite Shannon here?

Shannon won't remember this meeting in the morning.

Beatrice rants to her predecessor. What did Shannon find in the human world that Beatrice can't give her here?

The next day, the family arrives.

The four cousins are filled with the energy of youth.

Ange hasn't yet been born, and Gohda and Kanon aren't yet in the employ of the family. There's no Witch's Epitaph to taunt the guests.

Everyone is here, and everyone is happy.

What's different about the day of the family conference on Rokkenjima?!
It's got to be the noise! There's never this many kids around!

Back when I was still a little brat, I was always jealous of Jessica, getting to live in this huge mansion with a private beach. But now that I try putting myself in her shoes, it must've been a pretty constricting place to live.
Probably. There's hardly anything on Rokkenjima. No friends' houses, no neighbors, no neighborhood. If you think of how Jessica must have felt, you have to feel a little sad for her.
That's why the family conference was so special to me. Jumping around, messing around! It felt like I was at a festival. We played tricks on each other all the time.
If the adults always talked about adult things and told you to go play somewhere else...
...then you were the three cousins at about the same age. Of course you'd horse around!
No, not the three of us. The four of us.
I thought Ange wasn't born yet, and Maria was still too young to play with you?
You've got it wrong, Furfur. The cousins weren't the only ones at the same age.

All four of us played together. We played at every family conference. Right, Shannon?
Right. I knew that Madam would scold me if she found out, but...
I wouldn't have let her! You were always the one close friend I had who could understand me!
Thank you for your kind words, Milady...

Then, at the family conference, Jessica had introduced Shannon to George and Battler. All of the adults had their hands full with their complicated discussion in the mansion. During that time, Shannon was able to put aside her role as a servant for a little bit, and act her age with Jessica, George and Battler.

Yep. Those were the only times that Shannon smiled like a girl her age.
I might have... gotten a bit carried away. It's embarrassing...
Battler's insanely huge now, but back then, Shannon and I were both taller and stronger than him.

Yeah, totally! Back then, your chest was nothing like this, right?
Shannon already had plenty of womanly charm back then, right?
Uh, ah, who knows...
What the hell do you mean by 'womanly charm'? Sounds kinky!
Well, I was still pretty cute back then myself. That bra strap you could see through the shoulder of her summer clothing set off the lightning of youth in me!

Isn't that nice! Another sweet page in the book of adolescence!
The most pure love comes when boys and girls first start noticing each other!
That simple, pure desire just to be around someone of the opposite sex, the noble first loves.
Just wonderful... A bunch of kids thinking and talking about the world of love!
D... Did that sort of thing... really happen...?

I-I was not curious! I-I was just... surprised at how much everyone else knew, and...
That's right. Shannon always played dumb the most, even though she was the most interested. She was the biggest pervert there!

Well, anyway, that's not all we talked about. There was a lot more than that. We really did enjoy our youth to the fullest.

A bunch of kids gathered together, playing stupid games and talking about trivial things. Is this the human pleasure you found that surpasses the pleasures of witches?
Yes. Doesn't it look fun to you?
I won't call it boring. However, I cannot see how such a vulgar game can compare to my paradise, where all wishes are granted.
Interacting with people is a lot of fun. Of course, I also think your world is fun, but even so... I choose this world.

Tell me. What is it you found within this vulgar playing?
Do you want to know?
I do!

With mystery novels, reading is only half the fun. The other half is discussing them with other people.

Ever since, the two of them would sometimes meet without the other two cousins in tow.

Neither of them knew the first thing about the unknown emotion growing between them.

Mysteries that ignore the motive aren't bad or boring, exactly, they're just missing something.

The heart is what drives humans. Without it, something as dramatic as a murder would never be possible.

No human can ever see into the heart of another. All of life is one long tale of mystery.

It's about time to head back.

If only she could stop being a servant, then things might be different.

If, eventually, she were to decide to quit this job...

They could be together as long as they wanted. Not just a couple times a year.

Sometimes the simplest mysteries are the hardest ones to puzzle out.

He'll keep waiting until that day.

Two detectives, each trying to solve the mystery of the other one's love.

Will he come back for her on a white horse in another year?

Don't forget.

Come here next year, okay?

It is an emotion I do not know. One I do not have. Though my magic can grant any wish, that thing I cannot have... that incomprehensible emotion... that burns like fire, and yet, madly, one wants to hold it close...

For the first time, I realized that I wasn't all-powerful. And, I knew what Shannon had discovered in the world of humans...
