MOTHERFUCKING LUCIFER AND THE BISCUIT HAMMER

Mild spoilers follow.





Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, a.k.a. The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer, a.k.a. Hoshi no Samidare, a.k.a. Wakusei no Samidare is the best manga I have ever read and this is a post about why.

The Premise!

Start is a basic urban fantasy shonen anime story premise! An evil wizard wants to destroy the Earth, and it is up to a band of rag-tag heroes, chosen more or less at random, to protect the Princess, defeat the wizard's Golems, and save the world!

Twist #1:



Our hero doesn't give a shit. In a bizarre diversion from the usual tropes, the main character is kind of a loser and a coward when the story starts - in other words, what most people would be like when suddenly told that they have to save the world from wizards and shit.

Twist #2:



See her? That's the princess they're protecting to save the world. Not only does Yuuhi not really care about saving the world, but he immediately becomes the secret right-hand man of someone who wants to destroy the world anyway.

The result is a three-way dramatic tension between the real good guys, the real bad guys, and the main characters who are plotting to betray both of them in the end. What will happen? Will the Earth be destroyed? Who will it be destroyed by? Will Yuuhi ever gar the fuck up?


The Characters



Yuuhi Amamiya is our ludicrously unconventional shonen hero! He is kind of a downer sometimes, because he has ideas about the main plot that don't really line up with anybody else. Also backstory trauma made him kind of an asshole.



Basically kind of a fuckup!

But that's not all there is to Yuuhi, otherwise I would not be a fan of this series.



He is also the most magnificent and compelling demonstration of Garing the Fuck Up outside of Gurren Lagann!



Basically Yuuhi is subject to the most amazing character development ever. It's ambitious, it's dramatic, it's neverending, and it always feels like it's still Yuuhi no matter how much he grows and changes.


Samidare Asahina



An astoundingly atypical love interest for a shonen series, Samidare is:

• Stronger than the main character, and
• Evil.

Basically a hot-blooded nice girl pseudovillain protagonist who's practicing on the villains so that she can get strong enough to destroy the planet.



She, too, is an interesting and complex and gar and awesome protagonist who grows and feels like a real person!


Then a couple side characters!

Mikazuki Shinonome



Mikazuki is the most crazy awesome Rival Character I have ever seen!



He is a Blood Knight in every sense of the term, participating in the plot basically only for hilariously self-centered reasons and finding stronger and stronger people to fight.



He is also an enormous dork in a way that turns everyone around him into other enormous dorks.


Shimaki Hyou



Oh my god, I don't even know where to begin with Shimaki. I have never seen a character like him in a shonen series that I can think of and any more elaboration would probably be epic spoilers.


Anyway! This manga has a fuckamazing cast. What else does it have?
