Before we continue with the story: Intermission screen!
We can do a variety of things between stages here! Only going to focus on a couple for now.

With the points we get from defeating enemies, I can upgrade units!
I barely have any yet, though, so I'll just increase Reimu's agility a bit.

And Graze is spent to buy new skills!
I'll get one for Reimu that makes her post-movement attacks more powerful when she's in fast mode.
That'll do for now. Onwards!

The human village! Reimu has enough of a reputation to be recognized by the generic villagers, who seem to be in good spirits despite the red mist.

Keine is already here!
Reimu is upset because she thought they would meet over food, but Keine already finished eating.

A mysterious stranger!
She mentions offhand that since she's off-duty, it's okay if Sakuya finds her here.

And of course, she finishes off the last of the taiyaki before Reimu can get any. Tempers flare.

Reimu hasn't had any luck searching so far, and neither has Keine. Keine gets sidetracked talking about the importance of learning from history.

While trying to think of other sources, the name Hieda no Akyu comes up. She's at the school right now!


Hieda no Akyu
Species: Human
Ability: Perfect memory
Disposition: Scholarly

Akyu has heard about the mist in passing - her body is weak, so she doesn't get out much.

While they're discussing the issue, another new face shows up! This time, Keine doesn't know her, either.


Youmu Konpaku
Species: Half-ghost
Ability: Swordsmanship, concentration
Disposition: Put-upon
Youmu introduces herself, explaining her half-dead status. She's here researching something as well!

However, her study topic isn't the red mist incident! It's "how to make an unblooming cherry blossom bloom."
Surely this will not be a plot hook for the next game.

But the friendly meeting of minds is interrupted by an explosion!


A mysterious darkness looms over the battlefield!

There's someone inside it!
Something tells me they aren't too friendly.

She came out!
Reimu is all, what is your deal.

Reimu thinks she probably has something to do with the red mist!
She doesn't seem to care, but thinks that the gathered humans look delicious.

Akyu's still in there!
Fortunately, she knows the identity of this youkai...

Rumia
Species: Youkai
Ability: Control of darkness
Disposition: Hungry

The battle begins! Rumia withdraws to behind her wall of convenient minions.

Youmu is fast and brittle like Reimu, but is also a melee fighter, trading range for attack power.
Her spirit abilities are Accelerate, which increases move speed by 3 for one turn, and Spirit, which increases Power by 10. What? Don't know about Power? We'll get to that later.
Let's go!

Reimu gets into her usual game of needling the crap out of everyone!
Since the fairies only have a max range of 4, this one has no way of counterattacking.

I... don't really know what these are, but they appear as enemies in EoSD, so they appear as enemies here!

Youmu takes an unlucky hit early on, but she returns the favor twice over!

These enemies are kind of flooding the area with danmaku fields!
Time to introduce a new game mechanic.

TIME TO USE A BOMB

In addition to damaging all enemies in the area, using a bomb clears all danmaku fields in the radius for one turn!
One turn we can use to push through to Rumia.

In addition to using her sword, Youmu can send out her ghost half as a projectile!

Made it to Rumia!
She thinks Reimu looks the most delicious of the group.

Moonlight ray!

Reimu dodges, but since she's in focus mode, she still takes a little graze damage.
5850 HP? Not that much worse than Momiji!

Let's teach her some manners!
However, even after both attacks are complete, Rumia's still standing, with about 1800 HP left.

A little yinyang orb action should do the trick!

Night Sign - Night Bird
This looks suspiciously like not dying.

She's got a Spell Card!
My options are twofold: Run away until time runs out, or defeat her - activating the spell card acts as a second lifebar, putting her up to 6480 HP.
The first option is for sissies and I will never choose it ever.

In spell card mode, the enemy's Power increases by 10, they get a new attack, and they're surrounded with a danmaku field that has special properties.
This one in particular halves the accuracy of all ranged attacks with in it!

The weakpoint is here! The field does not extend to spaces adjacent to her.

For her new attack, she surroudns herself in darkness...

Then rams into the enemy!
Damage isn't too bad.

Youmu has to use Accelerate to reach Rumia this turn, because danmaku fields hamper movement!

IT IS TIME TO USE YOUR ULTIMATE ATTACK, YOUMU

MEDITATION SLASH



Bam.

Rumia's too hungry to draw out any more power! She goes down.

Reimu lets her off with a warning this time. Rumia retreats, telling Reimu not to forget about this!


Akyu's fine!
The crisis has passed.

In trying to understand why Rumia suddenly attacked, there is some discussion of the Vampire Incident, when many weaker youkai were dominated by a powerful vampire in the past. Reimu isn't really listening.

Youmu's heading back home now! Reimu and Keine leave too, off to do some shopping.
Akyu muses as they leave, thinking about updating Rumia's entry in her Gensokyo chronicle...
