Route 2, Chapter 9: Selective Perception

Thursday, May 4th

In the end, I never did get that pendant back to Sara.

It was missing a piece, so maybe it's back in the infirmary!

Just the sort of guy I wanted to see!

I tell Takeshi about the pendant and the situation.

What!

The image in the pendant is gone.

Regardless, Takeshi agrees to help me find Sara's important thing!

Antics, trollin'.

The mission was a failure.

And on top of that, my time limit is up! Curses.

We can't really hide what we're up to from Sara well, so...

Apparently we were wasting our time, anyway.

That pendant has been missing a piece for as long as Sara can remember.

Back to business as usual!

The generator's got some kind of thing going on, according to Takeshi, and Sora says we have to fix it.

On the way, though: A voice.

It seems to be singing.

The voice is that of Sara, singing a soft song while looking at the pendant.

Moon sprite, shouldering a long bow
Waiting inside a dream
Tonight a story by moonlight
Hoping the wait will be short
Sleeping curled and snug
Sleeping in mother's arms...

This seems like a bad time to say anything. I'd better go.

But as I do, another vision assails me.

Another scene just like this one, a girl crying on the bed--

Around now, Sara realizes I'm here.

As I recall, that song was the same words that Sara said when she got all weird outside the generator room!

While we're on the subject, about that pendant...

Sara explains the mystery hologram image! It's only visible in certain kinds of light.

If I use her lighter, I can see it here, but not as well - flourescent light kills it. It's best under firelight or sunlight.

Backstory time! That pendant is the only keepsake Sara has of her deceased parents.

She doesn't know who it is in the hologram, but suspects that it's her father.

Having amnesia, I functionally don't have any parents, either.

Anyway, I have to go help Takeshi. Can I borrow that thing for a while?

One Noodle Incident later, I've got an injured arm.

Takeshi fills me with drugs and tells me to take it easy.

So! The pendant!

Got a lighter, Takeshi should be able to see it in action now.

...uh.

This isn't like the girl who disappeared before.

It's right there, Takeshi. I'm looking at it right now.

It's RIGHT THERE.

WHAT THE FUCK

You can't see it, either.

I have no answers to this strange mystery.

...and now I'm here again.

Someone is crying in the next room.

I'll wait... I'll keep waiting, okay?

Before I can get any more insight into what's going on, the scene dissolves...

You ran away!
You ran away and left that kid alone!

Answer me! Who the hell are you? Who was I running from? Who did I leave behind?

Who am I?!

Where am I--

--oh right, I'm sleeping in the infirmary. I'm trapped in LeMU.

So it looks like I'm still holding on to Sara's pendant. Better return it.

I don't know where she is, so let's try the whale room?

While I'm on the way, I hear splashing sounds from the pipe room!

IS IT ANOTHER FRAGMENT OF MY HALLUCINATORY PAST?!

Even worse, it's Sara! And she's flailing about in the water!

ENGAGE RESCUE oh wait this water is like five feet deep.

So yeah, swimming.

Apparently she's practicing, and looking like a drown victim, because she doesn't know how. The only flaw in her imaginary ninja training.

I'm not sure an amnesiac teacher is the best way to go, but sure!

SWIM LESSON ENGAGE

>I suppose.

Sara seems to ascribe to the ORA ORA ORA school of swimming. Loud, explosive, and not really very good.

LISTEN, WOMAN

IF YOU WON'T PAY ATTENTION TO MY INSTRUCTION, I'LL FIND A NEW SWIMMING PARTY

AND IT WILL HAVE HOOKERS, AND BLACKJACK

Antics.

Getting pulled into the water.

More antics.

Ultimately, the lesson ends without a whole lot getting accomplished in terms of swimming education.

I guess that's what you get for having an amnesiac teacher!

To be continued
