Chapter 23: Ah, Gods and Mortals on the Grounds of the Divine Lake (Continued)

[ BGM - Divine Festival of Gratitude to All Gods ~ Native Faith ]

When we last left off, Suwako had just stepped in to replace Kanako in our battle against the gods of the Moriya Shrine!

Without waiting for us to flock to her, she's charging us right away.

Suwakos primary weapons are giant glowing rings! Her overall aesthetic is very different from Kanako's.

She brought a few extra mooks with her, too! Not too threatening, really, just another thing to shoot down.

I remember you, Reimu.
You beat up Sanae last summer, when she was at her weakest.

Yeah, that happened. I also beat her up when she was at her strongest, though.

Good, good, I wouldn't be able to have any fun if you couldn't at least do that.
So act like a shrine maiden should and entertain me a little!

Suwako's evasion is much higher than Kanako's, but that doesn't mean much when you're fighting Reimu.

When she isn't using glowing rings, Suwako fights using giant, bizarre limbs.

This is why I keep Koakuma around! She can restore someone's MP, at the cost of a bit of Power.

While we're doing that, let's bust out Alice's special skill! Hourai Doll has taken the field.

This is the main purpose Hourai serves here - drawing enemy fire that could otherwise be directed at real combatants.

DEMARCATION

Rumia continues her investigation to see whether or not gods taste good.

And down!

Okay, not really.

Very good! That was a great warmup.

Tch, this new girl's pretty crazy.

The feeling I get from her is completely different from Kanako. Are they really from the same shrine?

So what IS your relationship with the other god? Is she your friend?

Wah, no way! That woman's an enemy, definitely an enemy!
She's a selfish lady who took over my shrine by force.

Took over your shrine?

Aauu. This used to be my shrine, before she barged in.

She took your shrine... and now she's taking another one.

So are you this shrine's native god?

If you have more questions, ask Kanako.
I'm the highest of earth gods, so would it kill you to show a little respect?

I'll just defeat you and shut both of you up!

You're getting pretty fired up. Looks like I should get serious, too!
Come forth, Long-Arm and Long-Leg!

Native God "Long-Arm and Long-Leg"

This spell card can be very irritating - the spell card zone acts as a wall, preventing us from crossing through those spaces. Marisa, Sakuya, Koakuma and Komachi are locked out of close range for now.

And as usual, there's a new attack to go with it.

This is so weird.

Okay! I can handle this.

Suwako's harder to land a hit on than Kanako, and still no pushover when it comes to sturdiness!

Also, Komachi is NEVER out of melee range!

A few hits later, Suwako's down.

I see. That's enough, Long-Arm and Long-Leg.

Gods are really weird. What's gonna come out next?

And with that other god still waiting in the wings, this could be a real headache.

Yeah, why don't you persuade Kanako for us?
You hard your shrine stolen by her, too, so can't you understand our situation?

Me? Persuade her?

Y-Yes! You don't get along with her, either, so...

Hahaha, sorry, but you guys are misunderstanding things here.
I believe in Kanako's determination. I'm not questioning her methods.

...After all, you're gods of the same shrine.

Well, yeah. Whatever happens now and whatever happened then, we still live together.

Indeed, that was all just ancient history.

You again!

You may have forgotten, but we came to this land together to gather faith.
From the Northwest, my divine power which creates the endless sky...

...And from the Southwest, my divine power which creates the land below.
United, we are a whole country. That hasn't changed, even in Gensokyo!

This time, they're coming at us at the same time!

We shall make known the divine light of the northwest and southwest combined.

In the kingdom of Suwa, the land rises in this native myth! In the kingdom of Suwa, the heavens conquer in this central myth!

Suwa War "Native Myth VS Central Myth"
Suwa War "Central Myth VS Native Myth"

People in the danmaku around Suwako have their water compatibility reduced to B. Around Kanako, their air compatibility is reduced to B.

Fortunately, my objective is only to defeat Kanako! FOCUS!

Oh my god.

Bless you, Guard.

Despite its ridiculousness, this spell card actually is very short! Only 12,000 HP.

So you've come this far. Impressive, for mortals.

Have you finally realized our strongness?

We've pushed you this far, so you'd better not call us weak!

Indeed, with that much power, amassing faith would be easy for you.
However, faith without respect for the gods is meaningless.

Sorry, but I don't see what's so good about that.

I didn't get you guys from the start.
Gensokyo doesn't need representatives like you.

Representatives?

Is that wrong? You say all you want is faith, but then you're demanding tribute, setting rules, and putting on airs...
If you're just doing it for appearances, that's a little pitiful.

Hahaha, pitiful? I won't deny it.
But even so, if we as gods don't respond properly to a shrine maiden gallantly defending her shrine...

Didn't the other shrine maiden say that you lost your faith in the outside world?

My faith is derived from the wind and the rain. Humans decided that such gods were no longer necessary, so it was a natural outcome.

So you ended up in Gensokyo, where you'll do anything to cling to your seats as gods.

What else can we do? Accept our destiny of slowly vanishing from the world?
No, I am a god! And as a god, I wlil protect my shrine, my shrine maiden, and the history of Moriya!

...So you bet everything on coming to Gensokyo as a gamble. That's what you're thinking, isnt it?

But there's only so much that Gensokyo can accept. If you fail here, it'll be your total defeat.

Oho, then do you have a better idea?

Figure that out for yourself. Whatever you choose, I'll do what I want to do.
My job is dealing with anyone who upsets the balance of Gensokyo. That doesn't change even if my opponent is a god!

[ BGM - The Raging Departed and the Wind of Divine Virtue ~ Venerable Ancient Battlefield ]

Very well, shrine maiden of Gensokyo. Then let that answer be your sword, and show us all that it can reach me.
I, who stands above the wind, above the rain, high atop a mountain of faith!

Mountain of Faith

In the field, we're at -10% evasion, and Kanako's armor and accuracy increase as her HP decreases.

FINAL CARD
LET'S GO

Patchouli paves the way with a mess of fire and lasers!

welp

And she's down! From full!

This is more than a tiny bit worrisome!

Cirno has the spirit command Assail, which she can use to attack with pre-move only attacks like Perfect Freeze even after moving!

Also, I've been giving most of my party some form of support, so Marisa can chip in, too!

Reimu can dodge anything Kanako can throw at her, but those Persuasion Needles are down to under 1000 damage. Not helping much!

Komachi: The only person who can attack every boss from outside of their maximum range! Also I just love screencapping this attack.

21,000 HP on this spell, looks like.

DAIYOUSEEEEEEEI

...was using defensive support, so she only took half damage!

She is getting very sturdy, but we're almost there!

Rumia is tanky enough to survive one hit from Mountain of Faith!

FINISHER TIME

Sorry for upstaging you here, but...

Love Sign! Maaasteeeer Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark!!

My divine power, defeated... this is...

W... We did it...

Is this our victory at last...?

It looks like I have to accept your answer.

In other words...

Indeed. This showdown ends with your victory.

Mmm... it kinda bugs me how you're still being all high and mighty, but whatever.

Shall we continue our conversation back at the shrine?

Very well. We'll all return to the Moriya Shrine.

Stage Clear

Turns taken: 12
Spirit Commands used: 21
Bombs used: 0
Patchouli Knowledge shot down

A godly chat! The fairies are a little worried that if we say the wrong thing, the fight might start back up again.

There is plenty of tea and food for everybody, because this is the end of a Touhou incident.

Now that the big issues have been resolved via violence, Kanako is showing interest in learning more about Gensokyo! The bizarre land where youkai will come to festivals for humans, and where shrine maidens will fight gods.

Marisa says that faith doesn't mean a thing if you can't have any fun, and Cirno points out that the other shrine maiden apparently didn't even have any friends. Hint hint.

Marisa thinks that the best plan for these gods would be to just get to know the mountain like normal people, without conquering anybody.

Suwako's going for the idea! It was fun hanging out with everyone and playing danmaku, after all.

Hey, look who it is! Sanae's all ready to return shamefully to her victorious gods, and is kind of confused to see Reimu & company hanging around. Sorry, Sanae, but your side lost!

Kanako's coming around to Marisa's idea, too. Instead of gathering faith, it's time to start gathering people together. Sanae has her doubts, but who is she to disagree wtih the gods?

And thusly begain the Moriya Shrine's first Gensokyo-style drinking party.

A lot of the human group have left by this dreadful hour, but there are still a few stragglers.

Adapting to the new balance of power quicklly, Aya is showing off the drinking power of a true Tengu. Momiji isn't great with the stuff, so she's staying out of all this.

After reflecting on everything that happened today, Sanae takes a moment to apologize to Momiji for coming to the mountain and selfishly setting up shop. Momiji assures her that the youkai of the mountain don't hate her. All they really want is to live in harmony with the rest of the mountain.

Sanae's self-reflection is interrupted by Suwako, who is drunk as a glass of water! Also, Kanako.

She tells her gods about her conversation with Momiji, and Kanako understands perfectly well. It's time to stop dwelling on the ways of the past, and build a new kind of faith...

They'll do it together, three gods on the grounds of the divine lake.

THE END

...what? Hell no! That was only the halfway point!

Next time: Filler episodes!
