Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 8 Scene 3: The Golden Witch's Granddaughter

<< | ^^ | >>

Down on the beach, the cousins play.

That storm's going to be starting any time now.

Battler sees something else in that expression. She's not just tired.

He's not buying it, but he lets it go for now. She can tell him later, if she wants.

Jessica splits off to drop by her room for a bit. The others head to the guest house.

George goes on ahead, leaving just Battler and Ange.

Finally, Ange speaks.

Battler understands, but pretends not to. The pieces all have roles to play, including himself.

It's all fake, isn't it?

Well, what's wrong with it? How about Kinzo, isn't that a nice way for him to be?

Kinzo was strict, merciless, and quick to anger.

How can she be sure, though?

She was only six when she last saw Kinzo.

The ruthless and overpowering Kinzo was just the face he showed to the world. In private, with his family, he could be his real self.

Try to remember. All the times he patted your head and played with you as a child.

When you're young, you accept whatever your parents tell you as the truth. But who's to say?

Kinzo can be a bit abrupt and unpredictable. What Ange saw as anger could have been him trying to surprise her.

When Battler came back after six years, he saw that Kinzo hadn't changed at all from his ridiculous, cheerful self.

Sure, he had a hobby of collecting weird artifacts to scare his grandchildren with. Everyone has their quirks.

He probably pulled a similar prank on Ange at some point. That's why she remembers him this way.

It's amazing how much she's forgotten over the past twelve years.

Kinzo was a man who loved the occult and Western traditions. How could he not celebrate Halloween if given the chance?

The present Kyrie gave to Ange, to give to Kinzo, came from Kinzo. He arranged the whole thing so that they could have a proper tearful reunion.

That's the kind of man Kinzo was.

Where did she hear that from, exactly?

She's not wrong. All four families were in some financial trouble.

So what? Does that prove beyond all doubt that the atmosphere was tense and strained at the family conference?

In the end, she doesn't believe.

You're right. This is my game. So, of course, this is my tale, and I'm the one making it. That's why I'm able to add in 'what if' situations, like what would happen if you came to the island, too.
See! You made this tale! It's all a pack of lies! A fiction you created!
You're right. This is all a fiction I created.
See?! You've admitted it! You have, haven't you?! Just like I thought, this is all a lie you made! Why are you lying to me?! Why won't you tell me the truth?!
Because there's something I want you to understand. Something more important than truth.
Something more important than the truth?! What the hell are you talking about?!
The purpose of my game is to help you understand that.

The witch's game can only ever be won by the other side acknowledging it.

Beatrice could only win if Battler acknowledged her as a witch. Battler can only win this game if Ange acknowledges his victory.

I finally get it... This is a game between me and you.
Ange. I'm not trying to challenge you to a game.
No. This is a game. I made a wish, hoping to learn the truth of October 4th, 1986. And so, you invited me to this game, saying that you'd show me the truth. And now, you're showing me this strange illusion, trying to make me believe that it's the truth! Well, too bad. I'm already used to dealing with witches. I'm fully aware that you're trying to use that kind face of yours to trick me!

Sorry. I won't let you leave this game.
Ah, that's right. Unless the Game Master admits defeat, the game never ends, right?
That isn't what I meant. I'm just telling you to stay quiet and listen.
Oh, sure. I'll just stay quiet and listen. Even if a player isn't around, the pieces just move by themselves, and the game moves forward. Isn't that how it was?
That's right. A player can step back and become an observer for a while if they want, and they can come back and join in whenever they want, too.
Then I'll do that. This is an endurance contest. It'll keep on going until you give up on trying to cover up the truth.

It does, Ange. Whether my tale is the truth or not, the fact remains that you lost something precious on this island.
Dad, mom, and you, Battler. I lost my family... and everything that mattered to me. Just keep going however you like.
At least make sure you watch the tale. Even just listening is enough.
If I feel like it. Later.

What were they just talking about?

Yeah, good point. Battler sends Ange off to the guest house, but stays behind. He'll be along soon.

Out of the corner of her eye, Ange sees a twinkle of gold, dancing on the wind.

BGM: Birth of a New Witch (Instrumental)

After exchanging a few barbs, Battler and Beatrice hug each other, looking like a pair of friends united after a long break.

Battler introduces Beatrice as a friend. Beatrice is scandalized at the lowly and uncomplicated introduction.

Beatrice doesn't buy that story. Wandering around in the cold rain and staring into windows to find naughty children is beneath her dignity. That story was probably just to get her to go to bed on time.

Killjoy.

Technically true, though - the woman who gave Kinzo his gold is this Beatrice's grandmother.

Whoever this person is, she seems to have a flair for the dramatic, but she's not a creepy child-snatcher kind of witch.

Maria described a witch who lived for a thousand years in the demon world. That image doesn't fit this Beatrice, either.

If Battler likes her, how bad could she be?

Battler just describes it to Beatrice as "Ange's precious key". Some unspoken understanding seems to pass between them.

The key is hers. Everyone else is simply here to guide Ange along her path.

Beatrice speaks in riddles, just as Battler did.

It is, in fact, impossible for anyone to steal the key. It's a magic key, after all, made only for Ange.

Yes. Of course it does.

Then prove it.

Battler tries to change the subject, which just makes Ange even more sure of herself.

Beatrice brushes off the provocation. Why not show her a little magic?

Now that the witch is actually going to show her magic, Ange feels a pang of fear. Is she going to be turned into a frog?

Ange carefully checks both sides of her hand.

Beatrice extends her finger, holding it right in front of Ange's eyes. Watch closely.

She swings her finger around again and again, Ange beginning to worry that she won't be able to keep up.

There had been no chance for that hand to grab anything.

Now, watch closely.

See?

Magic is real.

Beatrice asks Battler to accompany her to the mansion to pay her respects. Ange wants to go with them.

Ange follows along, clinging to Battler's sleeve.
