Let's Something Something
Hey, remember how I'm doing a fake LP of SRW:UG over at the comm?
Well, now I'm doing a real one.
Let's Translate and Play Super Touhou Wars

Title screen with badass music! Without messing with anything else (the option screen is locked in the demo, anyway), let's start a new game.

Name: Reimu Hakurei
Nickname: Reimu
Second Name: Wonderful Shrine Maiden of Paradise
The Shrine Maiden of the Hakurei Shrine. Lacks training, but she can get by using her natural talent. Gensokyo's realtype representative.
Name: Marisa Kirisame
Nickname: Marisa
Second Name: Ordinary Magician
A relatively ordinary magician living in Gensokyo. Saying "Danmaku's all about power," she uses maximum firepower to blindly blast away her enemies... or does she?
Since Marisa's route is a pain in the ass, I'm going with Reimu. Go ATX Team!

Alpha Level
A level that can be enjoyed men and women of all ages. Even people who aren't good at SRPGs can clear it.
Alpha Gaiden Level
A level that's a little harder. For people who aren't satisfied with just clearing the game.
F Final Level
A level for people who grew up playing SRW... is the plan, but right now, it's just the opening skirmish.
Because superhard SRW is stupid, I'll pick Alpha.
Thus begins... THE ENDLESS CUTSCENES.

Of course. It's been ages since I paid that place a visit, but it looks like nothing's changed.
I don't see her yet... I wonder if she's in good health?
It's already been a few days since the storm ended...
This mist cleared up, but it's gradually increasing in density.
If I don't stop it, it might reach the point where it can cause damage to humans...
! That's...
A group of fairies? But their movements are so coordinated, it must be...
But more importantly, just past the fairies...
...it looks like I'd better hurry.
I've got to let her know what's going on... that shrine's incident resolution specialist, the Hakurei Shrine Maiden!

Chapter 1
The Wonderful Shrine Maiden of Paradise
In case the above vaguely meaningless monologue by a shadowy figure with an obvious identity for fans of the series didn't tip you off, this game is so SRW it hurts.

Geez, what the heck are you talking about?
Making all this noise while I'm trying to take a nap...
Why are there this many fairies, so close to the shrine?
Tee hee.
Tee hee hee.
There's something weird going on.
Hey, you. This isn't a playground, so go home.
Ready? One, two...
Heeey! You pathetic armpit shrine maiden!
Heeey! Your home is a ghost shrine!
There's nothing in your donation box but leaves!
......
You're pretty cheeky for fairies. I wonder if I should exterminate you.

First unit deployment!
Come on, hurry up and go home. If you come any closer, we'll see who's really pathetic.
We did it! She came out!
Everyone, now!
Went by too fast to get a good screenshot, but the enemy fairies grow from two to eight in number!
! There were more?!
Ahaha, if we can provoke you that easily, this'll be a piece of cake!
Our enemy is a bumpkin shrine maiden who can't even fly. Everyone, gang up and attack her from the sky!
Ehhh... I didn't think there'd be so many.
But, I'll tell you one thing.
The one who can't fly is the old shrine maiden. Modern shrine maidens can fly, no problem!
DRAMATIC MUSIC ENGAGE
What?!
But everyone said the shrine maiden can't fly without riding her turtle!
Just because I don't have a turtle doesn't mean I can't fly.
He's living peacefully in the lake out back these days.
Anyway, I hope you're ready, because here I come!

And so gameplay begins!
I only have one unit - Reimu, with her fairly low 3200 HP. Let's take a look at the other side!

Eight fairies. No bosses; the two fairies who talked during the cutscene are just like all the others.
Let's take a look at Reimu's abilities...

From top to bottom:
Ascension Kick: Her weakest attack, but also her freest. Range 2, kicks a guy in the face.
Homing Amulet: Reimu's basic long-range attack. Longest attack she has, but it's also low-powered and can't be used after moving. 10 ammo, low critical rate, very high accuracy.
Persuasion Needle: Reimu's primary ranged attack on the go, Persuasion Needle can be used after movement. 15 ammo, decentish damage, no special abilities.
Yin-Yang Orb: For when those other attacks don't hit hard enough! Can't hit close, can't use after moving, only 4 ammo, but it does nice damage. Can only be used in the air.
Evil Sealing Circle: Curently, Reimu's strongest attack. only 3 ammo, only usable at point blank range, and it costs 40 MP.

Reimu's current only Spirit Ability is Sense. For the non-SRW fans in the room, that means that she has a 100% hit rate for one turn, and automatically dodges the next enemy attack. With her currenet SP pool, she can use it twice on one stage.
Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and let the enemy come to me, since the shrine is a good defensive position.

This is the main new feature of STW: Danmaku fields! All allied units inside these zones have reduced defense, evasion, and movement. However, this can be circumvented by switching between Slow and Fast mode - in Fast mode, you're affected by danmaku zones, but in Slow mode, you take small amounts of damage even when you dodge attacks.
And since I recover 20% HP per turn while standing on the shrine, I'm going to go with slow!

Lots of info on this screen, most of it ignorable! Reimu's on the right, with an 85% chance to hit with Persuasion Needle. The enemy is on the left, with a 20% chance - it would be 35% if I was on Fast mode.
LET'S GO
All right. I'll show you the power of the Hakurei Shrine Maiden!

Attack animations go by too fast for me to get a lot of screenshots! But yeah uh, all eight enemies have about as much health as Reimu. Fortunately, she's way faster AND does more damage! Reimu's needles hit for 2940 damage, and Reimu grazes the enemy retaliation, taking 173 damage on the miss.
Unfortunately, I don't get so lucky on the enemy turn...

It's a good thing she dodges so well, because she can take about 3 hits before she's in mortal peril.
Next turn:

Tch... they're better than I thought. Not bad, for fairies.
Oh, well. I didn't want to use a Spell Card against fairies, but this should wrap things up in one attack.
Prepare yourselves!
Dream Sign - Fantasy...

Intervention! By Keine!
That took longer than I thought. This is the Hakurei Shrine, at the eastern edge of Gensokyo.
So she must be the Hakurei Shrine Maiden, Reimu Hakurei.
Another fairy?!
Wait, no. That's a human.
Looks like the battle's already begun. As I thought, those fairies from before were heading for the shrine.
Hey, you. This is a pretty dangerous time to be out here.
There's something weird about these fairies. If you're careless, you might get hurt.
You're surrounded by danmaku. Aren't you the one who's in danger if you get careless?
Er...
It seems like this mist is affecting the fairies, increasing their power.
What's with you, butting in like this? Who are you?
What's this? You don't remember me?
We've never met!
It's another human. What should we do?
One, two, who cares? Just attack 'em all!
...This isn't really the time for extended conversation.
I agree. Let's continue after we deal with these.
Do you know how about danmaku?
A bit.
Hmph. Then, I have a question. What should I do when I'm surrounded by danmaku like this?
Simple. Switch to slow mode so that you can avoid them easily. You'll take a bit of damage as you dodge bullets, but the danmaku field won't affect you.
Hmm, sounds like you know what you're doing.
But, if you just wipe out the fairies, you don't need to rely on that. I'll teach by example.
You sure sound confident. Why don't you show me what the Hakurei Shrine Maiden can do?

Keine is a super. Let's look at her attacks!

First Pyramid: Basic ranged attack, can't be used after moving. Since this is her only ranged attack, she's actually fairly limited in long-range combat. 15 ammmo, decent accuracy and critical rate.
Three Sacred Treasures - Sword: Medium-short range sword attack. Damage is good, costs 10 MP. You have to be careful about running out of MP with Keine.
Headbutt: Headbutt.

Her Spirit Ability is Trust, which restores 2000 HP to herself or an ally.
Since she can't reach the enemies, though, I'll park her right outside of their danmaku range for now, while Reimu deals with the remaining northern fairies.

This was while defending, but still - even normally, Keine takes about half as much damage as Reimu does. Which is good, because she's a lot weaker in the evasion department.

Keine's sword attack is pretty flashy, but her damage output overall is a touch weaker than Reimu's.

A few fairies later, Reimu levels up! All stats increased, no new skills/spirits. Now, there are two Fairies left, and two of us, so how about we bust out some big guns?
EVIL SEALING CIRCLE

Stage Clear!

All right, that settles that.
Looks like you're done, too. About what I expected from a youkai extermination and incident resolution specialist.
Thanks. Now, what are you doing here? I get the feeling you didn't come to pay you respects.
I didn't. I'm here investigating some strange circumstances.
Investigating?
But nothing important has happened around here.
You were just attacked by a swarm of fairies. Do you really think that?
But enough standing around and talking. Why don't we discuss it over tea?
All right. My wonderful donation bo is over there.

MORE ENDLESS CUTSCENE

All right, here's your tea.
Thank you. You did a good job back there, too.
It was nothing. They were fairies, so no matter how many attacked, it wouldn't have been a problem.
And I can see your power is the real thing, too. I'm relieved.
What are you relieved for?
Nothing important. The rumor that you don't do any work turned out to be just a rumor.
Who said that? I'm busy all the time. Cleaning the grounds, accepting donations...
I wasn't talking about normal work...
Anyway, I came here to do some collaboration.
Collaboration?
Couldn't you have told me earlier, then we could meet somewhere normally?
Mmm, I'm talking about collaboration in building a "New Gensokyo." Getting together to teach Spell Card Rules and the like.
Oh, those annoying meetings. I don't remember anyone who goes to those.
...I thought not. The Hakurei Shrine Maiden has a reputation for having the worst attendance of all.
Hey, I never got any invitations! ...Probably.
......
Anyway, I should introduce myself. My name is Keine Kamishirasawa. I'm a professor at the human village.
Then again, professor might not be the right word, as the school is mostly just young children. Either way, nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you, Keine. I'm Reimu.
I had heard that there was a history teacher over in the human village.
Mmm, that's because history is my main subject. On the side, I teach a few other things.
So, what business does that schoolteacher have with me?
You said you were researching something unusual.
All right, I'll get to the main question.
But first, I want to confirm something. Would you say that the Hakurei Shrine Maiden could be described as an incident resolution specialist?
Yeah, it's my job to mercilessly punish anyone who causes an incident.
You didn't show any mercy before, either. You definitely have a way with persuasion.
I know it's sudden, but there was a meeting today about this red mist, so here I am.
You mean that supernatural fog? What about it?
Whatever you think about it, it's been a few days since the mist appeared. Didn't you notice it?
I guess. It didn't really reach the shrine, so I wasn't bothered.
That's because it's at a high elevation. However, it's been gradually spreading throughout the human village.
Sometimes mist with a bit of magic in it just happens.
I thought the same, and didn't look into it, but there's been a sign of trouble.
If it continues to intensify, this mist may start to affect humans.
If that happens, it happens, so I'll deal with it then.
My job is resolving incidents, not preventing them.
...the rumor that you don't do any work was true after all.
Did you say something?
No, just talking to myself. However, wasn't the behavior of those fairies odd?
Yeah. They were livelier than usual, and I could feel their power.
Indeed. For ordinary fairies to have that much power...
In other words, you're saying that the red mist created them.
Fairies are, by nature, spontaneously created.
Ah, so you do understand. Then, I'll cut to the chase. Will you work with me in investigating this red mist?
We need to do what we can, before the mist spreads any further.
I don't really think it's all that serious...
I'm worried about the humans in the village. Don't you understand?!
Hold on! I get it, don't get so worked up.
Anyway, I guess we can look into it.
First, we'll figure out where the mist is coming from. Does that sound good?
So you finall understand. This shrine maiden might end up leaving behind some nice history.
Well, then, how about we split up to find some information?
Eh, split up?
Yes. By yourself, nobody will suspect anything's wrong. I'll do the same.
Uh, I'd just...
Hmm, where should we meet?
How about in front of the big sign in the human village, in three days?
Are you listening to me?
Do you mean that place with the delicious smells?
Yes, I like their taiyaki.
I come there fairly often, usually ordering the Magic Dragon Azuking from their special menu.
(... !)
(Magic Dragon Azuking is supposed to be the most delicious taiyaki there is, huh.)
(I heard it's engraved with scales like an actual dragon's.)
(...I want one.)
Then, shall we meet in three days?
Sure, works for me. I'll do some research.
Got it. I'm counting on you.
Oh, goodness, is that the time?
I have preparations to do for class tomorrow. Let's call it a wrap for today.
All right. It's almost nighttime, after all.
Good luck with your half of the investigation. I'll be on my way.
All right, later.
There's something weird going on. This is the first time someone's come to me to ask me to solve an incident...
But even if the situation's weird, the conversation was fine...
Well, I'll go to that sign, at least. Maybe I can get Keine to treat me to some of those sweets.
Things are looking busy!
Did you think we were done now?
HAHA OF COURSE NOT. This is SRW. We need OMINOUS SHIT.

I'm back, master.
Welcome home. What's the situation?
Aside from the strife a few days ago, Youkai Mountain has been quiet.
Considering the severity of the circumstances, it's surprising how small it seems from here.
Such is Tenma's influence. With the Oni gone, he doesn't so much as turn an ear beyond the mountain.
Yes. He may think it best to stop the fighting before the ripples can spread.
Currently, martial law has been declared, and no youkai are permitted to enter or leave the mountain save the crow tengu.
The tengu are on patrol around the mountain, and the security is flawless. All flow of information has been cut off.
The usual lockdown, then. With security this tight, reconnaisance won't be easy.
There is no need for concern. I will do whatever you ask of me.
Heh heh, indeed. After all, you're a nine-tails... my strongest shikigami.
It is as you say. Acting as Lady Yukari's subordinate, I will find any fish that slip through the Tengu's nets.
I'm counting on you, Ran. I'll leave observing the mountain in your capable hands.
Leave it to me, master.
By the way, have you taken any measures regarding the red mist?
No, but the shrine maiden has begun to move. It's sooner than I expected, but it seems that the half-beast from the village has a hand in it.
So there are things that even Lady Yukari cannot predict.
Probability is a fluctuating thing. A local error can invalidate an entire system.
What's important is that the shrine maiden at the heart of that change...
...can become the border that restores this swinging equilibrium.
Yes. It is for this reason that the Spell Card rules were established.
Heh heh...
Ah, look, Ran. That child seems to be having fun, jumping for joy at the sight of taiyaki.
...Lady Yukari, you have some tasteless hobbies...
(Heh heh heh... the first major incident following the establishment of the Spell Card rules.
From now on, incidents will be different. However, this may be the beginning of a wave that could change everything...
Gensokyo's incidents, resolved by the Hakurei Shrine Maiden.
Now Reimu... how will you resolve this incident, as a human of the Hakurei Shrine?
AND DONE. For now.
So before I commit myself to another two chapters of this TLDR, be honest: Is anyone actually interested in seeing me do so? I'll probably keep it up as long as at least one person is interested.
Well, now I'm doing a real one.

I don't really think it's all that serious...
I'm worried about the humans in the village. Don't you understand?!
Hold on! I get it, don't get so worked up.Anyway, I guess we can look into it.
First, we'll figure out where the mist is coming from. Does that sound good?
So you finall understand. This shrine maiden might end up leaving behind some nice history.Well, then, how about we split up to find some information?
Eh, split up?
Yes. By yourself, nobody will suspect anything's wrong. I'll do the same.
Uh, I'd just...
Hmm, where should we meet? How about in front of the big sign in the human village, in three days?
Are you listening to me?Do you mean that place with the delicious smells?
Yes, I like their taiyaki.I come there fairly often, usually ordering the Magic Dragon Azuking from their special menu.
(... !)(Magic Dragon Azuking is supposed to be the most delicious taiyaki there is, huh.)
(I heard it's engraved with scales like an actual dragon's.)
(...I want one.)
Then, shall we meet in three days?
Sure, works for me. I'll do some research.
Got it. I'm counting on you.Oh, goodness, is that the time?

Aside from the strife a few days ago, Youkai Mountain has been quiet.Considering the severity of the circumstances, it's surprising how small it seems from here.
Such is Tenma's influence. With the Oni gone, he doesn't so much as turn an ear beyond the mountain.
Yes. He may think it best to stop the fighting before the ripples can spread.Currently, martial law has been declared, and no youkai are permitted to enter or leave the mountain save the crow tengu.
Leave it to me, master.By the way, have you taken any measures regarding the red mist?
No, but the shrine maiden has begun to move. It's sooner than I expected, but it seems that the half-beast from the village has a hand in it.
So there are things that even Lady Yukari cannot predict.
Probability is a fluctuating thing. A local error can invalidate an entire system. What's important is that the shrine maiden at the heart of that change...
...can become the border that restores this swinging equilibrium.
Yes. It is for this reason that the Spell Card rules were established.
Heh heh...Ah, look, Ran.

Are you translating the game cuz you can read it? That's awesome.
My google-fu sucks, and I can't find the game on my own.
This is JUST the demo, or is a full ver out by now?
