Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Scene 13: The Last Heir

<< | ^^ | >>

Ushiromiya Krauss

His corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. The direct cause of death is unknown, but it seems like the side of his head was smashed after his death.

This is the beginning of everything.

Ushiromiya Rudolf

His corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. His face seems to have been smashed after his death.

He has the right to lament his ill fortune.

Ushiromiya Kyrie

Her corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. Her face seems to have been smashed after her death.

She was chosen by the demons' roulette. That's all there is to it.

Ushiromiya Rosa

Her corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. Her face seems to have been smashed after her death.

We'll be able to see her again. No need to feel lonely.

Gohda

His corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. His face seems to have been smashed after his death.

How unfortunate. Apparently, he was actually supposed to be on duty in the guest house.

Shannon

Her corpse was found inside the rose garden storehouse. It seems the side of her head was smashed after her death.

Don't worry. Everyone will be revived in the Golden Land.

So, Kinzo is missing.

One of the family's top priorities is to find him and let him know what just happened.

Everybody knows so little about the situation. Nobody is coming to help.

Let's review the situation.

Six victims, and one person missing. If Kinzo had just gone on a stroll, he would no doubt have returned by now - the one person who prepared his meals is dead, so he must be hungry.

We must face the possibility that Kinzo is already another victim.

Maria knows her mother is dead, but isn't affected by this news in the slightest. If anything, she's more cheerful now than she was before.

Battler overheard the conversation between George and Hideyoshi from last night.

Jessica recalls a story of talking with Shannon about George. Depending on the person, a proposal of marriage can be the best day of a girl's life.

What she's trying to say is that, before she died, Shannon was truly happy. Possibly happier than she had ever been.

It's easy to see where George's mind is going. Because he proposed, she was to embarrassed to return to the guest house with him. Because she didn't return to the guest house, she went to the mansion. Because she went to the mansion, she got involved in Gohda's work.

Gohda and Shannon are now both dead.

Battler is joking around a bit, mostly as a defense mechanism to shield himself from the tragedy he just witnessed.

He isn't feeling the urge to mourn right now. Instead, he wants to know.

Who did this? Where are they hiding?

Or, for that matter, are they actually hiding at all?

This murder could be related to the letter from last night.

Eva is of the same opinion as Kyrie - that there is no 19th person. Beatrice is one of the surviving twelve people on the island.

According to Genji, only one shutter key exists. The storehouse is always kept shut unless something from it is needed, so there's no chance it was left open by mistake.

Eva's reasoning is that the culprit is someone who knew the servant room and the path to the storehouse well.

In other words, that the culprit is one of the servants.

Furthermore, six people were murdered and moved to the storehouse. For a single person, such a daunting task would be nigh impossible.

We should assume the culprit had accomplices.

If this is true, then even talking about it is dangerous. Even in a direct confrontation, they might be able to take on the rest of the survivors.

The other idea, though, is that even the servants weren't acting alone. They're servants, after all - what if they're taking orders from a family member?

It's all very sensible conclusions. Anyone could look at the evidence and come to the same suspicions.

Turn the board around. If a servant was the culprit, why would they do so many things that were obviously only possible for a servant?

The bodies were moved to the storehouse. When the police found this out, they would immediately look to who controlled the key. For the servants, locking the bodies in the storehouse would be a pointless, difficult, and extremely dangerous move.

I see what you did there, Battler.

Inside jokes aside, Battler's reasoning is that, if you just want to kill someone, you should do everything in your power to make sure that the fact that a crime was committed never comes to light.

In an ordinary murder case, the marking on the storehouse would be absolutely insane. It accomplished nothing other than alerting the survivors to the location of the bodies.

The bodies were a message to the survivors. They were meant to be found.

So, one question remains: What was the message?

Everyone here was close to one of the victims.

Natsuhi and Jessica lost Krauss.
George lost Shannon.
Battler lost Rudolf and Kyrie.
Maria lost Rosa.
Genji, Kanon and Kumasawa lost Shannon and Gohda.
Nanjo may have lost Kinzo.

...Actually, wait. That's not quite everyone, is it?

There are two people who got out of this without losing anyone close to them.

Eva is the first to admit it - she has the strongest motive out of anyone here.

The inheritance was going to be split four ways, among the four siblings. Now, there's only one sibling left.

Eva uses the same argument as Battler - rather than saying she did it, she claims that the crime was committed to cast suspicion on her.

Eva's alibi is as follows:
  • She was present at the mansion, discussing the inheritance, for most of the evening.
  • A little after midnight, she and Hideyoshi returned to the guest house to sleep.
  • When they arrived at the guest house, Genji greeted them, asking if they needed a towel.

The problem is that the crux of her alibi is a verification from Genji - and she just made the argument that the culprit is in on it with the servants.

Her counter-argument is that, if she was trying to kill off the others, she would have made it look like an accident.

Once again, the problem is the mark on the storehouse door. For Eva, it would be a suicidal move.

Does that mean that Eva and the servants are innocent?

Or did Eva deliberately set this up to make herself look too obvious to be the culprit?
