Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Scene 18: The Closed Room

<< | ^^ | >>

Ushiromiya Eva

Found on the bed of a guest room inside the mansion, with a weapon resembling an ice-pick rammed into her forehead.

The windows and door to the room were locked from the inside, and even the chain was set. There was no way for a human being to have killed her.

Ushiromiya Hideyoshi

Found in the bathroom of the same guest room that Eva was found in. Like Eva, there was a weapon resembling an ice-pick rammed into his forehead.

You can't see either of them by looking through the gap of the door while the chain is set. You can't see them, so you can't reach them. Hey, how could a human possibly kill them? Kihihihihihihihihihihi!

Natsuhi is done making this a democracy. As the oldest member of the family still alive and accounted for, she is taking command.

Even beyond the two additional murders, there is business that needs attending. The second letter.

But before even that, something's wrong. Something smells burnt.

Kumasawa goes to check the kitchen. Genji sends Kanon along with her.

Genji turns on a fan to deal with the smell. In the meantime, Battler meets with George. They are united by a burning desire to find the one responsible for all this.

The first crime was ambiguous. There could have been multiple storehouse keys, or anything. But the chain is different.

As long as the chain remains set, it is impossible for anyone to enter or exit through the door. The chain cannot be unset from the outside.

The storehouse was wide open for anyone to access. Kinzo could have hid or left through the window.

This is a true closed room.

Okay, what are our possibilities?

Theory 1: The culprit knocked on the door to make them look through the gap.

Not possible. Eva's body was found on the bed - if this method was used, they would have died next to the door.

Theory 2: The murder was committed by a witch.

Battler asked for a crime that could prove to him that the killer isn't human. Isn't this that proof?

Battler gives Maria's head a quick smack. Don't laugh at a time like this.

Well, since we have our resident occult expert on call, why not get some info?

The text on the second glyph is from Psalms 107, Verse 16:

for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

This spell has two effects. First, it can unlock any door. Second, it can give you the power to come up with an answer to a problem that you hadn't considered.

George's patience with Maria has broken. His parents and his future wife are dead.

But how? How could a human have committed this murder?

Meanwhile, Kanon and Kumasawa have found the source of the stench. It's coming from the boiler room.

The old boiler has had plenty of problems over the years, but this bellowing stench is new.

From the basement, the sound of a door closing. Someone is down there.

Mere seconds ago, everyone was crowded around Eva's room. Who could possibly be in the boiler room now?

As a servant, Kanon knows that the boiler room has two entrances - one here, and one out to the courtyard.

In other words, if someone is down there, he only has a moment to catch them.

Kumasawa joins Kanon, but only after a moment's hesitation.

For a moment, Kanon is alone in the boiler room. The smell is overpowering here.

Rather than look for the source, Kanon grabs a hatchet from a tool shelf and scans the dark corners of the room.

Kanon's words elicit no response. Is there even anyone to respond to him?

What Kanon sees next, he can't exactly explain.

Kanon continues to speak. The butterflies laugh.

Is this real? What's going on?

The roulette lands on 0, the house takes everything. It's the final wildcard in a roulette spin.

Kanon is no longer interested in playing a witch's game.

He's not anyone's furniture now.

He's the zero on the roulette wheel.

There is the sound of laughter.

In Kanon's chest, a short-handled spear.

In Kanon's heart, a final act of defiance.

Kumasawa is too late. But if she had been there, what could she have done?

Kanon is still alive when they find him. Natsuhi sends Genji to fetch the doctor.

The flashlight reveals only an empty room.

An empty room, and a door left ajar.

Without thinking, without regard for his own safety, Battler charges through after whoever just left.

But it's too late. They're gone.

The courtyard connects back to the mansion by two unlocked doors. They could be anywhere by now.

All that meets Battler's words is the sorrowful sound of the wind.

In the courtyard, Natsuhi swears to protect the children.

No matter what, she will keep the four cousins alive.

However, Battler can't shake the feeling that those seagulls will never come.

Back in the boiler room.

Battler examines the weapon. It's a strange weapon.

A thin stake, with a spiral cut like a drill. Tip to handle, less than a foot long.

Elsewhere in the boiler room, Genji has found the cause of the smell.

The corpse is burned beyond anyone's ability to identify. But, when you think about it...

...there's only one person left who it could be.

Natsuhi points at the corpse's feet. On each foot, there are six toes.

Polydactyly occurs in about one in two thousand infants, and the extra digits are usually surgically removed early in life.

In other words, this is absolute.

Also, his corpse is more than simply burnt.
