Let's Play Umineko, Episode 2 Scene 15: The Master Keys

<< | ^^ | >>

October 5th, 1986, 7:30 AM
16 hours, 30 minutes remain

People have generally calmed down by now, although they are still quite rattled.

Rosa is the only remaining adult of the family. She needs to be strong for the others, since Kinzo is still shut away in his study.

So, she takes command. She's off to see the head.

Unseen by Rosa, something else joins her. A single golden butterfly.

Back downstairs, everyone is numb with shock, aside from Kumasawa, who never saw the carnage.

She suggested a break for some Halloween-themed snacks. This is, of course, extremely awkward.

The topic turns back to the culprit, who must be on the island. Is it that mystery guest?

However, nobody has seen Beatrice since the incident. She might already be dead.

Again, the question of why the killer would do something so obvious, rather than try to hide the murder until they could safely escape.

It once again comes down to the ultimatum in the letter - solve the epitaph and find the gold, or everyone dies.

Oh yeah. Jessica and Kanon.

They should be OK, right?

More importantly, there was an important clue back at the chapel. There were three gold bars piled up on the table. However, Krauss only ever found one bar establishing the gold's existence.

Where did the other two come from?

Nobody could have smuggled them in with their luggage. So, it must have already been here.

It's almost as if the culprit already found the gold.

Creepyface Maria or no, we need to consider the very real possibility that the gold isn't what the culprit is after.

Around now, Rosa, Genji and Shannon return.

Rosa's already-brief patience for her daughter's quirks is even shorter in the current situation. Also, she's brought the hunting rifle.

The three of them met with Kinzo, and found him unperturbed by the murders. He's still alive, at least.

It's time for safety in numbers, and that means going to get the two missing members of the group. Battler, George and Gohda offer to go find Jessica and Kanon.

A what?

Copy down what?

Before either can be answered, the group heads over to Jessica's room, led by Rosa and Genji.

Since Kinzo remains locked in his study, Rosa is in charge. She keeps the group together, making sure nobody falls behind.

But when you think about it, will numbers even protect us? How did the culprit kill six people at once? Powerful weapons? Multiple accomplices?

A witch's magic?

We've reached the room, but something's not right.

There's something on the door.

The paint(?) on the door is fresh. This was done recently.

Gohda knocks and calls out, but there is no reply. The door is locked. Gohda uses his master key to open it.

There's only so much you can mentally prepare yourself for.

Jessica is dead. In her back, one of the stakes.

Everyone deals with shock in their own way. Battler and George blame themselves. Rosa blames Gohda for leaving her alone. Gohda defends himself, saying he was only obeying her and Kanon's wishes.

Wait a minute.

Kanon isn't here.

Everyone present searches the room, but it's no use. Nobody is found, dead or alive, beyond Jessica.

Rosa screams for silence. She's thinking up something.

It's the key to Jessica's room. Rosa just picked it up from the table, inside the room.

There is one master key held by each servant. Those, and Jessica's key, are the only ones that can lock or unlock this door.

Purgatorio

That's right. Since you want to make me believe in magic by using closed rooms, it would suck for you if there were extra master keys. Every time a trick with a lock showed up, I was planning to argue that the culprit had a duplicate.
That's correct. So, I've decided to make a move to defeat that. I'll alter the setup.

Messing with me, huh? More importantly, what is this move? What's Rosa saying?
Who knows? You should try listening in!

Someone killed Jessica, then locked the door.

Because Jessica's key was inside the room, it was someone with a master key. That's five people.

Kumasawa woke up late, and has no alibi.
Gohda stayed behind to help Kanon and Jessica, and has no alibi.

Genji and Shannon have alibis, though. They were in Kinzo's study, confirmed by Kinzo and Rosa.

So, we have two suspects: Gohda and Kumasawa.

No, there's a third.

Jessica was struck in the back. In all likelihood, this means that the culprit was someone who Jessica knew well.

Jessica was extremely upset, and it would make sense for her to shut herself up in her room. She had some kind of relationship with Kanon, so she might have welcomed him in.

Both Gohda and Kumasawa admit - at gunpoint - that they are not so close to Jessica that she would talk to them under such circumstances.

It makes sense, doesn't it?

The only person who could have committed this crime is Kanon.

Rosa has changed. The burden of command has awakened her dark side.

George and Shannon oppose this at once, but they're grasping at straws. If it wasn't Kanon, then who opened this door, and how?

In order to defend Kanon, they have to accuse someone else.

Purgatorio

So the culprit is the 19th person, the guest Beatrice. She's a witch, so she could lock the door using magic. Are you telling me to accept that? Damn it, damn it, damn it!
Ahahahahaha! In the last game, I learned all of your weak points. So, what will you do, what will you do...? You weren't going to accept me, were you? Then use Kanon as a sacrifice! Kanon killed Jessica! If you support Rosa's theory, everything is settled here, right? Kanon is already dead. There should be no need to show concern for the dead. And you won't have to doubt anyone else! Hahahahahahahahahahaha!
Damn it! I won't accept you! But Kanon being the culprit... there's no way!
