Let's Play Umineko, Episode 2 Scene 16: The Missing Servant

<< | ^^ | >>

Ushiromiya Jessica

Found in her own room in the mansion with a weapon shaped like a stake rammed into her back.

Finally, at the very end, she got to be with the person she loved. She must have been happy.

Nanjo doesn't wish to label Kanon as the culprit. However, for now, thinking that way is safer.

The target is a vast amount of gold. Anybody could be related to the crime.

Beatrice lacks a master key, so she couldn't have done this, but she's still a suspect for the first murders.

Everyone is.

Trust nobody but yourself. If Kanon returns, he must not be trusted.

Nobody wants to, but everyone thinks it safest. The group half-heartedly accepts Kanon as a sacrifice.

Looking on from another world, Jessica cries at the cruelty of Kanon being blamed after everything he did to protect her. Kanon, on the other hand, simply understands.

This was Beatrice's plan.

Kanon's words are well-intentioned, but that's about it. They're calling Kanon the culprit so that they can stop thinking.

From now on, every murder will be the Kanon's fault.

What better time for Beatrice to gloat at some ghosts than now?

No matter how hard they protest, the voices of the dead will never reach the living.

And so Jessica's voice is not heard.

The closed room shall once again be closed. The truth will be lost along with it.

A voice cuts across the silence.

BGM: Dread of the Grave

Purgatorio

Honestly, I give up there. Seriously, why'd I say it's all useless? I don't take responsibility for my own conduct. Hihihihihi... I'm empty-handed, with zero weapons to argue with. But you know, I won't hold my finger to my lips anymore, Beatrice!

Rokkenjima

Battler doesn't accept Kanon as the killer. He also doesn't accept Kumasawa and Gohda.

Purgatorio

Repeat it! If you can say it, try saying it: 'Kanon was holding a master key'!
...hoh.

Rokkenjima

Before Gohda split up with Kanon. Back when Jessica raided the VIP room.

Back then, he protected Kanon's honor by remembering exactly what happened.

Purgatorio

Hahahaha! Is that so? Certainly, Gohda has no recollection of the master key being returned to Kanon. However, she might have returned it when Gohda wasn't looking! How does that prove that it didn't happen?! Hahaha, if you could just search the pocket of Kanon's corpse, you could establish that, but you can't! It's impossible to prove!
It's all useless. Isn't it actually simple?
...

Rokkenjima

If Jessica never returned the key, she should still have it. It'll be in her pocket, and that will prove Kanon is innocent!

It's there! Jessica has the master key!

Rosa fights back. Even if Kanon couldn't lock the door, he was the last person to see Jessica. He must still be a suspect.

Battler lays down a new rule of survival: Don't accuse someone unless you have perfect proof that they're the culprit. Without trust, the group will quickly dissolve.

Purgatorio

BGM: Golden Sneer

Well done, well done... not a bad job.
Shit. Was I fooled by that bait piece, just like you wanted?
You wonderfully proved that at least Kanon couldn't lock the door to this room. The servants should all have been holding master keys. With that as proof, Kanon was treated as the culprit, so you wonderfully cleared away that suspicion. Hahahaha!
In that case, how did the culprit who killed Jessica lock the door? So that's the problem we have now. Sheesh, I've been drawn into a development that went exactly like you wanted...
Has it gotten through? Furthermore, you said something outrageous about not doubting any of the other servants. Well, then, it'll be worth seeing how you gloss this over...
Shut up. Let's get started. First, let's check the definition of this as a closed room.

Let me suddenly turn the board around. If I start by arguing about the door and the lock, I probably won't leave the palm of your hand.
Do as you like. What should I repeat?
Repeat it. 'Kanon was killed in this room'.
Hmm. Kanon was killed in this room. But I erased his corpse with magic, right? Ahahaha!
Again, repeat it. 'Kanon's corpse is in this room'.
Hahahahaha! I refuse. I can't repeat it, because I erased the corpse with magic. Kihihihihihi!
So you won't say that... there's got to be a secret hidden in there somewhere. Damn, where's the mysterious point in question? Did they lock it without the master key? Or did they somehow kill those two when they were inside the room and it was locked? Or did they kill those two, and then somehow escape?

This refusing thing is really vague. I don't know if you refuse because it's impossible to repeat, or whether you can repeat it and you're refusing on purpose...
Back when discussing the lock to the chapel, you completely turned the tables on me. When I have an advantage, there's no need to go out of my way to use red and say things in a risky way. That's all.
That's right. Originally, you used the red when you wanted to stop my strange theories.
It's natural that I would use it to my advantage. Because of the risk of it being quibbled with, I won't use it uselessly. Well then, what move will come next? A move that puts Gohda or Kumasawa under suspicion would probably be the easiest to use, right...?
Stay quiet for a while, I'm thinking!
Of course, this door is the same as the chapel. When locked, it does not permit any form of entry. I'll say more: No trick could have the effect of locking the door from the outside without using a key. Hahahahaha!
Damn you for always using red when I don't ask for it...

Let's establish the facts.

There are two victims: Jessica and Kanon. There's no corpse, but Beatrice admitted it in red.

How did the culprit lock the door after the murder? If they had a master key, it's simple, but that would move suspicion to all the servants.

Is it really possible to prove humans could do this without pointing to a specific human?

Which is Battler trying to prove: That it was one of the people on Rokkenjima, or that it wasn't one of the people on Rokkenjima?

Even back in the first twilight, Battler had proven that somebody swapped the key out of Maria's envelope. That makes him, George, and Jessica all suspects.

D... Damn it... That doesn't guarantee that one of the family or the servants is the culprit! If you snuck up on us hiding in a cardboard box, for example, you could have slunk into our room and stolen the key, right?!
Hmm, that is also acceptable. By suspecting the guest, the 19th person, you won't have to suspect anyone else. So, how was Jessica's room locked? It's no trouble at all for me to open the lock with magic, but of course, I don't have a master key. If you deny my magic, you also have to deny that I'm a suspect, right?
...My goal is to pursue how the 19th person, the human guest Beatrice, committed those crimes. If I do that, I won't have to suspect anyone!
Hahahahaha! If you can do that? Foolish man. A room like this wasn't a closed room from the beginning. After all, there are a total of six keys that can open it. And there were several people holding those keys! You can suspect any of them! Suspect as much as you like! But you went through all the trouble of denying all of those, and made a closed room yourself! This is a closed room born from your mental contradiction! There's no one else, you closed that door yourself!
So you're trying to say that there are two options: Accept that a witch opened it with magic, or accept that someone I know is the culprit. Damn, are you trying to fork the rook?!
So much that I wanted to show you that this move exists. So, what will you do, Ushiromiya Battleeeeeeeer?! Isn't it actually simple? Don't you just have to make sacrifices of that overly self-confident cook and that hag who wouldn't be missed if she died?! Hahahahahahahaha!

In that case, they would have to enter the room without using magic or a master key, kill Jessica and Kanon, and even erase Kanon's corpse without using magic. How could it be done?! How could it be done so that you can deny me and not suspect anyone at the same time?! Hahahahahahahahahaha!

Rokkenjima

Battler gives up on solving this mystery. However, he's at least protected Kanon for now.

Rosa apologizes for things getting out of control before. The two of them shake hands and move on.

But one thing separates them: Rosa is still willing to make sacrifices to deny the witch.
