Let's Play Umineko, Episode 3 Scene 7: The Death of Beatrice
<< | ^^ | >>

Leviathan of Envy
Advanced-level furniture created by Beatrice.
Leviathan often speaks to Lucifer on behalf of the youngest sisters.
At her best, she has a brutal, deeply envious nature and is adept at spotting other people's weaknesses.
However, she is usually nothing more than a selfish crybaby.
For some reason, she's not a very quick thinker, and she oftenc omes in last among the sisters, end up with the short end of the stick, and cries.

Rosa begins to speak. Back then, she was a bit of a mess - bad grades, didn't particularly excel in anything.
The story starts shortly after she was scolded by her mother.

The young Rosa runs off into the forest, as a child's petty revenge. The forest, however, is undeveloped, and has no paths to follow. A child would easily get lost.

Even while giving important exposition, Rosa can't escape from the trolling of her siblings.
Hideyoshi is more interested in the location of the mansion, but Rosa couldn't begin to guess. She was just walking at random, and it was 20 years ago.

While wandering, Rosa happened upon Kuwadorian by chance.
At this age, Rosa believed in the witch of the forest, and therefore that this was her mansion. So, if she could get in, the witch would certainly come to her aid.

After a great deal of searching, she eventually finds a gap in the fence, caused by an oversized tree root.
Even beyond that, she had to wander through a lot of forest on the far side of the fence before finding anything.

But eventually, she found it. The second mansion on Rokkenjima.
Then, she found her.

Beatrice didn't turn her into a frog or anything, so that's a good starting point, right?
When Rosa gave her name, the mysterious women identified her as part of Kinzo's family.

The stranger introduces herself as Beatrice, as suspected.
Beatrice was real, all this time.

As far as Beatrice was concerned, Kuwadorian was the world. Anything beyond was a separate reality, divided by a gulf of woods and wolves.
She said that Kinzo would visit regularly, and they would drink tea or walk together.

As they talked, Beatrice became preoccupied by something Rosa said earlier.

Rosa explained a zoo as a place where animals are put in cages so that people can look at them without any chance of the animals escaping.
Beatrice related to the idea a little too well.

Feeling sorry for the mysterious person living in a cage, Rosa made a mistake. She invited Beatrice outside.

The gate was always closed, but Rosa now knew about a secret route.
Having lived her all her life, the prospect of leaving was terrifying to Beatrice, but she remained determined.

This was a true innocent, someone who had never once felt betrayal. All she wishes is to put aside the name of Beatrice and start a new life, as a free human.

Every sight, every step outside was a new miracle to her. She was taking her first steps from a finite world into an infinite one.

The fact was, though, that they were lost. Night would soon fall, and even finding the edge of the island was a matter of luck.

The two of them finally reached the ocean, from atop a high, rocky cliff.
Rosa's plan was to carefully make her way down the rocks, then walk along the beach until they found the main mansion. Beatrice accepted the plan with no complaints.

She found a slightly safer spot, where the cliff had collapsed into a slope. With some care, it should have been fine.
Beatrice was still having fun. She had no sense of danger, rambling on about aquariums and why they have so many things in them that aren't actually fish.

And that was when it happened.

Beatrice had never encountered a cliffside before.

Which is why she fell so easily.

And that was the end of the 19th person on Rokkenjima.
Purgatorio

I was just flirting with your sexy friends... more importantly, what is all this?
Hmm. As you see, I missed my footing, fell down, and 'died'.
What did you say... even though you appeared as the 19th person... you say you died...?
Don't mess with me, that can't be! Rosa was a kid, so she was rushed. It's not like there was a doctor. She probably made a mistake, thinking you were dead, and you probably were alive and pretending to be dead or something! Isn't that right?!Rokkenjima

Beatrice fell ten meters from the top of the cliff, hitting her head against the pointed edge of the sharp rocks. Rosa tried furiously to deny it, but this was the truth.
Is there any other possibility? Did she fake her death, then come back later to plan a night of savage murders as revenge? This story doesn't make any sense!
Purgatorio

How does that look alive to you? She's definitely dead!
Then... who are you? You just died, right?! You aren't going to say that you revived yourself with magic, are you?!
I've already explained it, though! The me that is lying over there definitely has my soul, but that body was nothing more than a cage of flesh tying me to the physical world. Thusly was the cage broken. Do you understand what that means?
I don't have a clue anymore. Keep having fun with your witch girl tricks. I'll listen instead of eating tea cakes! Hey, could I get some more black tea?
Hahahaha! Ronove, the guest wants some black tea.
A refill, you say, certainly. How much shall I pour you?
Well, I've got more than enough tea cakes. Half will be fine.
Even so, filling it to the brim is the English custom.Rokkenjima

Gradually, it dawns on Beatrice. That corpse wasn't her. It was only a cage.
Free of her prison, the memories of her thousand-year reign return.

However, the reborn Beatrice is still weak. Even the sunlight is agony to her frail spirit.
Taking the form of a cloud of butterflies instead, she looks down at her corpse one last time.
It would be ages before she could restore her physical form. However, she is the Endless Witch - she has all the time in the world.

Purgatorio

That is correct. I take this form to sneer at you, but normally, it is easier for me to keep my form as gold butterflies.
Don't stress yourself. I wouldn't mind not hearing your irritating laugh.
Hahahaha. When I turned into butterflies and slipped into the forest, it was already no longer possible for Kinzo to find me. He was not dismayed, but he was unable to immediately prepare a way to catch me. Therefore, he first moved immediately to prevent me from leaving the island, and to keep me from regaining my power. Kinzo's spitefulness was unimaginable.
What, did he put a bug net around the entire forest?
It was done magically. On the sea in front of the harbor floats a reef, on which sits a small shrine of Eastern magic.
Ah, that. It was gone this year, though. It was a small shrine built long ago, right?
This island was originally an island of distortion. Things magical were attracted to it, Milady herself included. Tea?
Please! They did harm to humans, and probably left several eerie legends. That small shrine was built in ancient times by an Eastern magician who heard of them. A long time passed, and that power was lost. By repairing it, Kinzo tied me to this island.
Can Eastern magic work on a Western witch?
Normally, the affinity is poor. However, in a way, the conditions for sealing me were good. Eastern magic is outside my area of expertise. It was as if I had been given chopsticks instead of a spoon to drink soup.
So you're trying to say that it took you 20 years to regain your power, and now you're revived?
Kinzo tried more during those 20 years, but every attempt to re-capture Beatrice failed. It wasn't until now that he worked out the ritual with the 13 sacrifices.

18 people on the island. 13 are sacrificed. Beatrice revives. Kinzo's odds were about one in three.

When Kinzo's life ended, all of the gold I had lent him, and all of the assets he had created, would be received by me. I decided to go along with Kinzo's game. He returned to me the family ring, then the 13 people were chosen randomly as sacrifices.
But you are here! Who are you?! Aren't you the 19th person?!
That is true. I am the 19th person. Hahahahahaha! But it's useless, right? It's all useless!

Pukukuku... that is what it means. It is truly sorrowful... however, Milady truly is a fast worker. Just when I thought you would let him flounder around before turning everything over at the end. Well then, Battler, would some more tea be agreeable to you?
I don't need it, damn it! I don't believe it! The culprit couldn't be one of the 18 people! Then, what are you, why are you here?! If the 19th person doesn't exist, then are you saying you're one of the 18 in disguise?!
Hahahaha! Perhaps you are castling. Though reluctantly, you are doubting one of the 18 people as your last way out... however, it will be difficult for me from here on. If you throw away appearances, you could prepare a culprit freely amid 18 people! Making you reach check mate by evading those 18 pieces will truly be difficult.
As if I would do that! I won't doubt one of the 18! I don't want to doubt! Have I really been cornered here again?! Damn it, damn it, damn it!
It looks like you have finally reached the end of your battle with this third game, doesn't it? There's nowhere to run anymore, right? Hahahaha! You don't want to doubt any of those beloved people in the 18, do you? Were you trying to hide that from me? And yet, why do you refuse me?
They say you should play the opening like a book, the middle game like a magician, and the endgame like a machine. I'll corner you from here on. Slowly, carefully, surely. Or, on the other hand, would it be better if I pressed you all at once, as would be fitting for you? That should suit you, so let's do that. I now thoroughly know of your unskillful method of attack! Hihihihihihihi!Rokkenjima

The first day comes to a close.
