Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 5: The False Happiness

<< | ^^ | >>

Kyrie puts forth the same theory that Battler did. Natsuhi, as is her idiom, overreacts.

It would even be fairly easy, once this is over, to force a meeting with Kinzo under the supervision of a third party, so if Kyrie is right, this secret can't be kept for long.

If Kinzo is alive, then Krauss has no reason to reject these conditions.

Accepting Kyrie's terms is the only way to safely get her to back down here.

Most likely, if he's alive, Kinzo will die peacefully in his study. The only way to safely dispose of him if he died otherwise would be for him to mysteriously disappear. That's what Kyrie's conditions are aiming at.

Very suddenly, Rosa, Eva and Rudolf all start suggesting that there's a way he can get out of this with their unquestioning faith, without signing any suspicious contracts.

This is, after all, part of the attack plan from the younger siblings to corner Krauss. The argument they have on every board.

Hideyoshi cuts in to get everyone to calm down a bit. The battle ends for now.

Eva lays down a time limit. Come tomorrow, they'll drag Kinzo out by force if they have to.

Everyone is pretty much on board with Kyrie's Dead Kinzo Theory at this point.

Krauss and Natsuhi are probably off having a strategy meeting now about how to hide Kinzo's death a little longer, right?

Wrong!

Because Kinzo is very much alive.

As if the head of the Ushiromiya family would quietly die without finishing his life work.

In fact, Kinzo seems more alive than ever before. The strength of his ancient body seems almost unnatural.

The almighty Goldsmith deigns to make a proclamation to the lowly Krauss: Come tomorrow, without fail, he shall attend the family conference!

Thunder crashes outside to herald Kinzo's return.

Rosa is back from rescuing Maria from the cold and rain. As in the past three game boards, Maria was given an umbrella by a mysterious benefactor.

Despite their earlier conflict, Rosa and Maria seem to be on good terms now.

Even Eva's harsh standards are a form of love. Every parent wants their children to grow into fine adults.

Purgatorio

...I got careless. Sorry for dropping it.

You will injure yourself. Leave the cleaning up to me. Shall I bring you another cup of black tea?
I don't need it. I guess a demon's black tea just doesn't match my tastes.
Hoh. To think that there is someone whose tastes aren't satisfied even by Ronove's tea. I must respect your discerning palate.
I'm getting bored, so I'll go out for a second.
Bored? Wait a sec, this is where things start to get interesting. About now, Maria is probably going to say that she got an umbrella and a letter from Beatrice again, right? This is the essential part...
Sorry, I'm cointing on you to clean this up.
Leave it to me.

Outside, Ange sulks. This scene has put her in a sour mood.

Why, you say! Isn't it obvious?
Uu. Maria doesn't understand...

The door to Maria's world opens once more.

By objectively, you mean from your perspective, right?
Are you trying to say that the truth is different for me and you, Maria?
Truth can change its form depending on the observer. Observers from the future always overwrite that form. Ange, what are you trying to do to Maria's happiness?
...

World of Maria

Rosa made a promise to go to the movies with Maria tomorrow.

Not only is she breaking that promise, but she doesn't even remember making it.

In some ways, Maria is a sharp kid. She knows that certain patterns of behavior will make people suspicious about Rosa's parenting.

Rightfully so, really.

Maria promises to not annoy the neighbors by crying. Rosa hangs up.

Rosa has been coming home later and later, more and more often. Sometimes from work, sometimes from a date, often coming home drunk and going straight to bed.

Maria and Sakutaro get in an argument over whether or not Rosa should quit her job.

Maria is Rosa's only ally in a cruel world. They're the same - a pair of outcasts who only have each other.

In order to make Maria feel better, Sakutaro promises to always be with Maria.

There's nobody else to make Maria feel better, so Sakutaro will bravely fight his tears and make her feel better. That way, mama can come home to a happy Maria, and she can feel better, too.

For Rosa's sake, Maria will be strong.

As long as mama isn't coming home, Maria and Sakutaro decide to play around in secret. Staying up past nine! Eating jelly beans all day! Mixing cola and melon soda!

The two friends play late into the night.

Maybe next time, Rosa can join the fun party, too.

After a long, fun night, the two friends go to sleep side by side.

Purgatorio

Yeah. Maria is happy.
...Even though you were looking forward to that movie so much, and Rosa promised that she'd definitely take you, she completely forgot.
She just happened to forget because she was so busy with work. Even if she had remembered, with her work, there would be nothing she could do. Whether she remembered or not, mama would spend the night at work.
Well, like you say, even if Rosa had remembered her promise, you wouldn't have been able to go to the movies in the end, but even so. To think that your mother just forgot her promise to spend one of her few days off with you... it's sad. I'd be mad.
Yeah. It was sad. Because even if she had remembered, we wouldn't have been able to go to the movies.
But after that, I had a very, very fun night with Sakutaro. You must've thought that pajama party looked really fun too, Ange.
There's no way that would be fun. I mean, all of that messing around you did that night was just like intentionally making a big fuss about nothing so you could forget that you were lonely and that your mother wasn't coming home.

...Where was something like that ever written in Maria's diary?
It isn't written anywhere! But... by reading in the gaps between every line, I can understand your feelings! You didn't have a good time at all that evening! You stayed up late when you were told not to, broke the rule about eating sweets outside of snack time, and when even that didn't bury your sadness, you went wild in your room, and made a mess of it, right?! And after you made a mess of your room and were all tired out, all you did was claw at the bed sheets and cry yourself to sleep, right?!
...It is written in the diary that mama probably forgot her promise about the movie, and that I stayed up late having a pajama party with Sakutaru, and made a mess of my room searching for treasure.
Yes! And... this is what it means! You were starving for Rosa's love, Maria! Rosa always put her work and her public image first, always keeping you on the back burner! That's what disgusts me! Because I know just how superficial Rosa's words of love for you are! You should realize this yourself! And despite this... how can you say that you're happy?! I don't understand that part of you, Maria! Even as old as I am, I can't understand it at all! Why aren't you sad? Why is it that you can experience a reality filled with misfortune and call yourself happy?! I can't do it, I don't understand it!
...You are a sad kid, Ange.
I don't get it! Why are you pitying me?!
Even though a fact about a really fun pajama party is written in my diary, if the same fact is observed by different people, it has a different form.

In this diary, Maria wrote that what happened that night was very, very fun.
You described the events of that night as something very happy.
And yet, when you read the diary, the events of that night sound vey, very sad.
...Even though you describe it as happiness, I read it at something different.
Stop it. This... tells of a happy night. This is... the truth of that night. Please, don't take this happy truth and paint over it with a new, different truth.
...Does this make you happy, Maria?
Yes. Maria is happy. That's why Ange, who can't feel happiness in the same situation, is so pitiable.

Maria took a sad truth and transformed it into happiness.

It's a power that Ange doesn't possess.
