Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 6: The Familiar

<< | ^^ | >>

Rosa finally comes home after her long work stay.

Maria is in a shockingly good mood. Rosa was sure she'd be coming home to a miserable, crying daughter.

After a moment's shock, she starts to accept Maria's smile, and her heart warms a little.

She was never expecting that stuffed animal to be such a huge hit with Maria.

Two presents from mama! The first is an assortment of nice candies. The second, she says, is a new set of friends to join her and Sakutaro.

Maria is immediately overflowing with joy at her new set of friends. Rosa, relieved that her gifts were appreciated, starts to feel the weariness of the past few days again.

Maria helps Rosa with her coat, and as she does so, a small ticket stub falls from its pocket.

The pleasant mood shatters.

Maria doesn't understand. Was she not supposed to touch that? What just happened?

Rosa hurries off to her room without another word.

Sakutaro assures her not to worry. Come tomorrow, Rosa will be happy again, and everything will be fine...

Purgatorio

Ange, I think you're looking for happiness in the wrong way.
You're the one who's wrong! How can you call this happiness?! It's so pitiful that I can't watch any more!
What is? That mama suddenly got mad? That happens sometimes, when humans get tired. Condemning a person because of a momentary misplaced emotion isn't very adult of you, Ange.
I can't believe I'm hearing this from a nine year old... but that's not the problem! That ticket stub you picked up was clearly strange!
What was? There was nothing strange, so it has nothing to do with the happiness of that night, right?
Rosa called because she'd be staying over at her company because of work, right?! Why Atami?! It means she left you and went on a vacation, right?! And you normally don't go on a vacation by yourse--
Even if that was a ticket for Atami, that alone doesn't make it proof that mama lied and went on vacation, right?
She lied on the phone, changed her expression like that, and grabbed it from you! What more proof could you want?!
It might be from a business trip long ago, right? Or maybe she just happened to pick up some trash and put it in her pocket. It might be a receipt from someone who worked for her who went on a business trip. In that case, it was important for her work. It wasn't a toy, so I can understand why mama took it away. This evidence you're talking about is nothing more than circumstantial evidence. Imagination and delusions. Maria doesn't know why you're interpreting it so that mama and Maria's relationship is bad.
I'm the one who doesn't understand why you're interpreting it in a way that's so convenient for Rosa!

Instead, you only look at unhappy Fragments and continue to get hurt. That's why you're scared of being hurt, and only start looking for happiness after you check to make sure there's nothing around that will hurt you.
When I talk with you, it gets hard to tell which one of us isn't making sense.
There are lots of happy and unhappy Fragments, so people who can't find happiness right beside them won't be able to find it no matter how hard they look. Like Tyltyl and Mytyl searching for the blue bird.
Oh yeah. That story with a moral.
You're the complete opposite, Ange. You're searching for a world without a fragment of unhappiness. But even that's the same as the blue bird. You will be unable to find your happiness for all eternity. Battler is Hansel? He isn't the blue bird?
Give it a rest already. In any event, I understand that a night of happiness was wasted because of a single scrap of paper.
It sure is scary that a single scrap of paper could do that. In that case, maybe the power to get your happiness also lies in a single scrap of paper, right?

World of Maria

After the scene a moment ago, full of self-loathing and frustration, Rosa notices a letter left for her on the end table.

Maria doesn't know why Rosa is apologizing, but she knows that the Good Rosa came back.

Purgatorio

Maria understands your feelings, more or less. Even Maria was like how you are now before she realized that power. A pitiful child who could only find Fragments filled with misfortune.
What is that power? This power that I don't have, but you do. Are you saying that I am unfortunate and you are blessed because I don't have that? Just what is that, which you can't describe except with an abstract word like power?
You want to know that, Ange. That's why you've been reading my story so far. Of course, I'll teach you the secret to that power. I did teach it to you long ago, when you were little, right? Did you forget? It's okay, I can remember. Now, I... no, she will teach you.
She?

The scene changes. Beatrice, Maria, and Sakutaro chatting away in an elegant garden.

Sakutaro introduces himself to Beatrice. He's a bit nervous meeting someone like her for the first time.

He gets over it quickly. However, Beatrice is quite interested in this phenomenon.

It's not uncommon for a spirit to inhabit a stuffed animal. After all, they are mostly handled by children, who have little to no anti-magic toxin. However, this existence is very fragile - a tiny bit of real world common sense can destroy it.

Beatrice is astounded. This is no mere doll. Sakutaro has fully materialized in the human world.

Such a thing is extremely difficult even for great witches, and that's for trying to materialize an existing demon or spirit. Maria created Sakutaro out of nothingness.

She's still an apprentice, but Maria is using incredible magic. She doesn't even realize it. She created a soul.

Making 100 from 1 is easy for a witch. However, a thousand times harder is what Maria has just done - making 1 from 0.

Maria will no doubt be a Great Witch some day, even greater than Beato. The Witch of Origins.

Beatrice will honor the up-and-coming witch's apprentice and her new friend with a gift.

To do this right, she'll need a little help.

Good timing!

Virgilia greets Sakutaro with solemn, elegant respect.

A spell to strengthen the power that materializes Sakutaro should be easy, with how much power Maria has already put into him. Virgilia will only need to help a little bit.

Beato begins writing the spell in Maria's grimoire. Watching, Maria figures out what the spell will do before it's finished.

This is gonna be good.

Virgilia signs, completing the contract. Sakutaro is officially recognized as a new entity.

BGM: Sakutaro's Adventure

Meet Sakutaro's true form!

The two resident witches express their approval of his various charm points.

The Witch of Origins is a witch who seeks to surpass witches and become a Creator. After one thousand years of training, Maria might be able to reach that level.

She'll need an outfit befitting of her new rank!

Maria loves it, of course. The fun party doesn't seem like it will ever end!

Purgatorio

Please, don't be afraid of being happy. Becoming happy isn't the same thing as accepting your current misfortune.
...I... didn't want to acknowledge my current world. I couldn't allow for such an isolated and painful world to be accepted. That's why, even though I was entranced by your world, Maria... I couldn't cross the final line.
Maria will teach you about her Magic of Origina. No, taught you before, right? And you used it before, right? Did you forget?
...
You were also a witch apprentice, Ange, with your name entered into the Mariage Sorciere, weren't you?
...Yeah, that was true. Mariage Sorciere... that takes me back. I also had my name entered in there at one point, didn't I...

Ange meeting with an expert on western folklore and the occult. One of the few people in any position to understand Kinzo's research.

A large number of ancient documents sold by Eva Ushiromiya at an auction, to later be called the Ushiromiya Library. The Dead Sea Scrolls of the occult world.

The name of Rokkenjima has become synonymous with the occult. All thanks to the Ushiromiya Library.

Some time after the Rokkenjima Incident, a fishing boat from a neighboring island picked up a message in a bottle. The papers inside were all signed by a girl named Maria Ushiromiya, but handwriting analysis suggested that they were probably written by somebody older than her.

Due to the handwriting problem, people thought it to be a hoax, but when a second bottle with matching handwriting was found, it gained some credibility.

In this way, the mysterious puzzle surrounding the murders of the Golden Witch Beatrice became known to the public. Over ten years have passed since the incident, but it still captures the imagination of the occult world.

Everyone wants to know the same thing: What happened on that day?

To make matters more complicated, the two bottles found contain completely different accounts of what happened that day.

Two bottles. Two theories. Only one can be the truth. A Schrodinger's Box that can never be opened.

The explanation goes on and on from here, but what it comes down to is that this guy is a high-level Witch Hunter.

Who wrote the letters in those bottles, and why? Why would they risk it being lost at sea due to the uncertainty of the communication method? Why did they write more than one version of the story?

The truth, though, that was 17 people died and 10 tons of gold were stolen. That's not just a prank.

And another mystery: The diary is far too long to be written down in two days during the middle of a mass murder. Does that mean that the whole thing ws a carefully-orchestrated crime?

The last and greatest of Eva's curses upon Ange.

If the writer of that diary was the real culprit, then it seems like Eva surviving was a mistake. In other words, Eva might not be the culprit after all...

Ange asks a parting question as the meeting ends: Why did he become a Witch Hunter?

The professor says that, if given the opportunity, he would totally become a witch. Although such things don't exist, obviously.

Another question confirms that he has, indeed, seen the message in the bottle himself. He even knows the handwriting by heart.

Ange drops a book on the table.

Her question is obvious.

His reaction is more than enough to confirm her suspicions.

Whatever her true identity is, this diary is the work of Beatrice.

Ange makes her cool exit.

She has gained one clue from meeting with that weird professor, thanks to her strategy of claiming to be a member of the Sumadera family.

But the real Sumadera family is in hot pursuit.

Kasumi isn't about to let Ange go so easily...
