Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 23: The Sin

<< | ^^ | >>

On the way to his test, a pit stop.

Shouting is pointless. He gave them the key, so they can't do anything unless they can get it back out to him. Battler goes around to check the small side window.

But they can't pass the key back out.

The number of people on the island is decreasing quickly.

It could be suicide, but why? Why would they hang themselves?

The only humans left on the island now are Battler, Maria, and Kinzo. And Beatrice, if she can be called human.

Battler heads to his final test.

Along the way, Battler finds George's corpse. The rain has washed away most of the blood, leaving just the hole in his forehead.

This is the first undeniable dead body he's seen since this all began.

Finally, Battler reaches the mansion.

Half expecting a huge ambush, he instead finds a box.

As he looks down, he hears the mansion clock strike midnight.

The bridge between days. The bridge between worlds.

Somebody is looking down from the second floor balcony.

BGM: The Candles Dance

Battler thinks it's the first time they've met, but that's not true. Blinded by his doubt, he has walked past her again and again.

Beatrice is the black bishop, but Battler has clung to the white spaces. So, Beatrice sent piece after piece to deny him anywhere to stand in the white spaces, and force him into the world of black.

There is nobody here but Battler and Beatrice. She is now the queen - a piece that controls both white and black spaces. She can freely move between the human world and the magic world. Beatrice's resurrection is complete.

Battler takes a different look at the metaphor - Beatrice is simply pouring black ink all over the board. But there's one place her ink can't reach.

Now that he can see her, Battler's fear has decreased greatly. She's in a position of great power, but Beatrice is a person.

Battler would rather just come in and kick her ass, but he can't. All the doors are locked, all the windows are shuttered. Beatrice's castle is strong.

If he passes the test, he will be granted an audience.

Battler opens the box. Inside is a letter.

What's this? The test seems incomplete.

What a strange test. Not only must he pick one to finish the test, he has to fill in the blank first.

Battler says he doesn't have any particular girl he's into, so the test is a wash.

But that wasn't the real test.

Beatrice finally speaks with a dignity matching her portrait in the main hall.

Battler answers the first question without hesitation. However, even the name "Ushiromiya Battler" is called into question.

Beatrice can somewhat understand why Battler ran away, but this act was a disgrace to his Ushiromiya blood.

That blood is the debt to the Golden Witch. Did he think he could throw that debt away so carelessly?

However, he did return, eventually, so there's a chance at redemption.

But there is another sin he must atone for.

Battler doesn't understand. What sin?

Her eyes don't reflect a vicious puzzle or trick. She's asking this seriously.

What was Battler's sin six years ago?

Battler doesn't consider abandoning Rudolf to be a sin worth acknowledging. The debt he owes Rudolf for raising him is balanced by Asumu's dying regrets.

BGM: Worldend Solo

Battler's anger was healed by time. On the day of his other grandfather's funeral, Rudolf put his head to the floor and apologized.

So for his mother's sake, he forgave Rudolf. Or, at least, he wiped the slate clean, and started their relationship over.

Beatrice's expression doesn't change. If anything, she looks slightly disappointed.

She has no interest in the matters surrounding Rudolf. That is not Battler's sin.

It is a sin appropriate to this place. Rokkenjima, residence of the Ushiromiya family.

Purgatorio

Sorry, Beato. I have absolutely no memory of it. You make it sound like I caused you trouble six years ago or something, but I supposedly met you for the first time at this family conference. It's true that your legend also existed six years ago, but I didn't know you.
Naturally. On the Rokkenjima of six years ago, I was not yet materialized.
Then what kind of sin are you saying I have? Are you saying... I've sinned against you somehow?
Don't make me say the same thing twice. I was not materialized six years ago. There is no way I was acquainted with you. In the world of you, it was as though I didn't exist.

At least give me a hint. Does this crime having something to do with you and me?
I had no connection to you six years ago. Remove me from your thoughts already. Why... do you think it is a sin against me?
...Your eyes.
Eyes? Hoh.
You see... your eyes are whispering at me to apologize... But I had no connection to you six years ago, and it looks like you acknowledge that, too. Is that true? Is it really not a problem between me and you?
I already said it wasn't. No problem between you and me has anything to do with this.
But still, your eyes are telling me differently. So, I don't even have a clue.

Then why are you looking at me with those eyes?
I don't know. I am simply gazing at you blankly. If it feels that way to you, perhaps it is because there is something that makes you feel that way.
...What kind of sin are you saying I have?
Ushiromiya Battler has a sin.
I'm asking you what kind. It's probably just some stupid sin, like hitting someone or tricking someone.
Because of your sin, people die.
L-Liar! I've never killed anyone! Then say it! Who did I kill?! When? Who? How?!
Due to your sin, a great many humans on this island die. No one escapes, all die.
Whaaaat?! What kind of incomprehensible thing are you saying?! Are you saying I killed everyone?! I'm the killer?!
It doesn't mean you carried it out directly. However, because you committed a sin, from an imperfection in the cogs that stretch back six years, tonight, this many lives are lost. You are one of the causes of this tragedy.

Don't fuck with me, give it a rest! For these six years, I've been the man farthest from the Ushiromiya family, right?! How could I have influenced anything?! It's not like I came to the conference because I wanted to, right?! I'd returned to the gathering after six years, so to make up for that lost time, I came to Rokkenjima reluctantly! It's not like I had some duty to come here today! I came back, and because of that a massacre occurred? Then what?! You're saying that if I hadn't come back, no one would've had to die? Say it in red! Can you say in red that, if I hadn't come back, this massacre wouldn't have occurred?! There's no way you can say it, because you're the culprit for everything!

Answer, in red! Try to repeat it! You can't! My existence has nothing to do with the crime. Quit saying incomprehensible stuff and trying to confuse meeeeeeeeee!

Rokkenjima

Battler calls her out to just say it already - what grudge does she have?

She asks, one last time. Can he remember his sin?

???

With this, are your regrets at an end?
...Hmm...
For even a hopeless bet, regrets will remain if you do not take it. That is enough. The betting itself has meaning.
...That may be true. In that case, this is... the end of my regrets, and my game.
What will you do?
Who knows. I'm not interested at all any more. Sorry, but I wish to leave the game board.
...I see. I understand.

Rokkenjima

The witch doesn't answer. Her expression contains nothing but ice.
