Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 5 Scene 2: The Family Alchemist
<< | ^^ | >>

His corpse was found in the servant waiting room on the first floor of the mansion. The direct cause of death is unknown, but his neck was sliced open by a sharp blade.
The wound was deep enough that anyone could easily confirm his death with absolute certainty.

The same. His corpse was found in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guest house.

The same. Her corpse was found in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guest house.

The same. Her corpse was found in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guest house.

His corpse was found in a guest room on the first floor of the mansion. A demon stake had pierced through his back. The tip of it reached as far as his lungs.
Because he was lying face-down on the bed, it is unthinkable that this was a suicide.

BGM: Rose
Natsuhi hammers on the door to Kinzo's study.

Kumasawa and Genji are watching as well, as Nanjo examines Kinzo. Finally, he steps back, and sighs.

The diagnosis is final. Kinzo is dead.

Though they aren't related by blood, Natsuhi had thought of him as a second father. The news hit her hard.

Sad as it is, there is business to attend to. One way or another, this settles the issue of inheritance.

Many will come to try and devour Kinzo's works. It now falls to Krauss to defend them.

The possibility exists that the other siblings will start to suggest foul play. Nanjo's final job as Kinzo's doctor will be to establish beyond any doubt that this was not the case.

She'll have to talk to Jessica, too. The girl is now the direct successor to the head.

The gears are turning. Krauss is thinking of something. Nobody move.
The mood that's suddenly gripped him is quite evocative of his father. He has something to talk about, but not even the servants can hear.

The timing of this is very important.

Krauss's financial situation, as usual, is not good.

All his plans have been risky, but sound. Only bad luck and timing were against him!
That, or was it fraud? Is Krauss just afraid to admit he's been conned repatedly?

Let's not mince words: When it comes to business, Krauss is a complete failure.

BGM: Melody

Natsuhi usually doesn't interfere with this business, but this is an emergency.
Krauss has built up massive debts funding failed project after failed project.

The timing of Kinzo's death is very unfortunate. Krauss's only option might be to sign over the deeds and power of attorney.

The Ushiromiya family is in peril of collapsing.

Krauss is reluctant to talk about the details, but if all this comes to light now, there may even be criminal charges.

He just needs a little more time. This one, this will be the scheme that pays off.
But Kinzo is dead. What time do they have? More than anything, they need a lot of money, right now!

Natsuhi's duty, she believes, is to support her husband. However, her husband is a fool, and she also has a duty to protect her family.
What should she do?

Natsuhi is astounded to learn that Krauss actually believes the gold exists. Wasn't that just some obviously fake story made up by Kinzo?

After begging her idiot husband to pull himself together and have an ounce of sense, Natsuhi runs out of the bedroom and into Genji.

Rather than continue to huff off, Natsuhi stops to ask about the study. It's exactly as they left it.

Natsuhi locks herself in the study with her dead father and cries.

BGM: Worldend (solo)
As she cries, she imagines Kinzo sitting up to pat her head, and also imagines him standing up to scold her for her foolishness.
Neither will happen, of course. Kinzo is dead.

Isn't he?

Is this an illusion born of the pain in her heart?
Or has Kinzo's soul shown itself to her for just this moment?

When Kinzo became head, an earthquake had just wiped out the main family, along with their business. He was just a minor branch member, elected as head only because the remaining elders didn't trust each other enough to let it be anyone more important.

One by one, Kinzo had begun to cut his ties with the world, until he was truly alone.
Then he met her.

The pre-war Kinzo and post-war Kinzo were like totally different people. He was prepared for death, and instead he found enlightenment.

Perhaps, perhaps not. If Krauss is able to succeed the head not only by blood, but by spirit and conviction, then the Golden Witch will come to his aid.

BGM: Far

Kinzo and Beatrice explain the lesson of their lives to Natsuhi: A true monarch does not fear hardship. They declare that they will overcome anything without fail, even if they don't yet have a plan to do so. That hope inspires the weak to flock to them, giving them the power to realize what they declared.

There's no time to be crying right now. The Ushiromiya family crisis is already here.

Natsuhi proclaims the future of the family, under its new head. No matter how great Krauss's debts, there is no need to worry. All will be overcome.

Kinzo's time is over. Beatrice may now decide for herself who she will serve in his place.

The one she chooses is Ushiromiya Natsuhi. She will help in any way she can - aside from granting her the hidden gold. Kinzo's contract stated that that can only be passed on to the person who solves the Witch's Epitaph.

Suddenly, she puts it all together.
Natsuhi knows what magic she needs. She gathers the family.

Everyone else seems nervous or confused, but Natsuhi carries herself with great dignity.
Krauss reaffirms that his plan is secure. If only they had more time...

Father is in good health. He's busy with his research, so he'll be spending even more time than usual in his study, that's all.

Don't worry about that for now. He is alive, so there is no need for an autopsy.
Kinzo will never be reported dead. He'll be reported missing.

Beatrice's magic will be used to revive Kinzo.

If all of them are able to believe, then within their universe, this can become a new reality.
Magic is belief.

With this, Natsuhi's crisis is resolved!
