BATTLER

The Endless Sorcerer and the final Game Master. He is the ruler of the game board and the territory lord.

To prove that he has won Beato's game, he must act the part of the Game Master. By succeeding in this, his victory will be acknowledged, and Beato's game will reach its end.

Because he knows all of the truth, the plane on which he exists is higher than all others.

Kumasawa, there's something I'd like to know.
Hohoho... very well, what is it?
My name is Beatrice... isn't it?
Yes, that is correct. You are Beatrice, milady.

BGM: Mystic Forest

...Well...
i think father wanted me to be that person. I think that might be why he was disappointed... because no matter how much I looked like her, I am a different person.
That isn't true. You are Beatrice herself. You have merely lost your memory of the past after being newly reborn. Even without your memory, you are the same person whom the master loves.
So then... how can I regain those memories?
Well...

If I can't regain them, can't you at least tell me what kind of person the Beatrice who father loved was?
That is something I can tell you, but....

I cannot use magic. However, if the witch father desires could use it, then I will learn. I want to become the witch he desires. That's the only way I can repay father for creating me.

A chick of a witch... very interesting. I've taken a liking to her, Ange. I shall allow this chick to make use of my study. Let us open the door which leads back to the world of witches.
So, you're going to make her read aloud the stories about her previous self. Yes, I want to know too. The tale of how the Golden Witch Beatrice was created.

You must choose the path that you are to walk down. Let us call it a path of roses. The beautifully blooming roses may encourage you and their thorns may torment you. But even so, it is a path that you once walked down. You may pass through the same thousand years. You may pass through a different thousand years. If you wish, you may even return back the way you came.
I'll move on forward. I don't want to spend a thousand years in this garden drinking tea. I, Beatrice, was born for father's sake, so I want to live for father's sake. Please, tell me about the Golden Witch.

It is the greatest of honors to be in your presence. Lady Featherine Augustus Aurora, the majestic Witch of Theatergoing, Drama, and Spectating.
Raise your head, child of man. I shall give that child the privilege of using my archives however she pleases for a time. Ange, my miko, see that she has no trouble.
Sure, sure, as you wish, my master. You could just tell her that you want to see her story.
Miko of the Witch of Theatergoing. I leave Beatrice in your care.
Pleased... to meet you...
...The Beatrice you're trying to become was suffering from something. At the very least, you've been released from that now. Will you really go on a journey to regain those shackles?
Y... Yes. I want to become the Golden Witch. That is the reason I was born.
I, the Endless and Finite Witch, Publius Virgilia Maro, ask that you make her journey through Purgatory a pleasant one, an that you grant her protection.

So... your name is also Beatrice?
Yep. I know a lot about you.
Please, teach me. What kind of person was I?
Sure. And I'll want you to teach me: Why did you become the person you were?

By reading them, can I become the Golden Witch?
To become the Golden Witch, one must solve the epitaph of the gold. This trial cannot be skipped, even by Beatrice herself...
I'll do my best. So please, let me read the books in this archive!
As worthy of admiration as ever. Why do you want to go back to being like that so much?
I do not know what I was like back then. However, if that me can be of use to father, I want to become it.

If you read, you will learn what kind of person the old Beatrice was. However, you must decide what you will take from that experience. You are free to stay in the archive, or leave the archive, or even return again later. In compensation, I will watch your play.
Watch my play...?

So the tale returns to Rokkenjima.

BGM: Patchwork Chimera

The shadow on the beach tears off her life jacket, coughing repeatedly.

Later, news of a visitor quickly spreads across Rokkenjima.

Furudo Erika has returned to the island.

No mystery on Rokkenjima will be able to challenge this great detective. After all, every trick of the genre has already been used over its century-long lifespan.

This time, Erika doesn't fall for the bait. She knows Battler is an avid reader.

BGM: The Great Detective Knows

George smoothly changes the suspect, but not necessarily for the better. As Maria brings out her book of puzzles and riddles, Erika starts violently solving them before anyone else can, inflating her ego even further.

Erika's perfectly aware of how annoying she's being, but that's just fine if she's capable of showing off how much smarter she is than everyone else.

Time to play along at home. Do you know the answer?

George decides to stay silent, he's heard this puzzle before.

Rudolf and Kyrie have figured it out. Hideyoshi solves it immediately afterwards.

Jessica's got it - you have to be able to think in three dimensions to get this one. Nanjo figures it out as well.

Battler's still floundering. Is it zero slices, then breaking it apart with your hands?

The knife can only cut in a straight line. Try thinking outside the box.

The obvious solution is four cuts, but you can solve it with fewer, right?

No other rules. So, you cut it into four pieces with two slices, then cut it the other way to double it into eight. The answer is three slices!

Wait, what?

No, no, the three-cut method is obvious. How could it be the answer?

BGM: Smile-less Soiree

It's still impossible. Do you cut it with something other than a knife?
The rules say that only the knife can cut it, and that the knife can only cut in a straight line. However, the rules do not say anything besides that... in fact, the shape of the cheese is never specified...

The book even has a picture of a round cheese, but the rules don't specify that it has to be that shape. With that cheese, three would be correct.

Normal cheese would break if you tried to fold it into that pattern, but didn't the rules specify? The cheese can only be broken by the knife.

The rules didn't say anything about equal portions, or realistic cheese physics. One cut, eight pieces.

Battler has plenty of experience with this kind of thing. If something isn't guaranteed by the rules - or by the red truth - then there's still room to change interpretations.

Next puzzle.

Easy - one in the first cup, two in the second, three in the third, done.

Erika's already solved it, of course. A true puzzle pro should be able to solve it with as few as three coins.
