Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 6 Scene 10: The Unbreakable Chain

<< | ^^ | >>

Bernkastel

With the victory of the human side, she should have achieved victory as well, but it seems that she can't accept it.

It appears that she is less concerned with who actually wins and cares more about how brutal an end might be reached.

This is why she is hostile towards BATTLER as he tries to end this peacefully, and why she is trying to use Erika to ruin this final game...

Shannon returns from a very important break. Kanon's already spotted the ring on her finger.

Shannon doesn't intend to lose to Kanon, but he doesn't plan on losing to her, either.

Kanon and Jessica have to give it their all if they want to win this duel.

It's the two halves of the brooch that Beatrice gave to Shannon when she acknowledged her soul.

This is the key.

That's the golden butterfly brooch, isn't it? I read about the magical brooch that can save a love relationship in Featherine's book.
That's why I generously gave her the butterfly brooch. Hahaha, I was in quite a good mood. It is no common thing for a heartless witch such as myself to be so gracious.
But it's wonderful. You brought a pair of future lovers together.
Of course, I did not do it to pamper them. It was in exchange for smashing that hateful spirit mirror that had repressed my powers. Thanks to that, I was unable to regain much of my power all in one go.

Kumasawa has the rest of the evening off. At Erika's urging, she's spent most of it drinking and talking about Beatrice's legend.

BGM: The Great Detective Knows

The mirror was placed to seal of Akujikishima's evil spirits. Why would it also seal Beatrice?

It's a strange story, for sure.

The story of Beatrice came after Kinzo took up residence here. Why would the rules for one legend apply to the other?

The original superstitions around the island were from fishermen fearful of the reefs surrounding it. However, a superstition needs a face.

If there really is someone named Beatrice, would spiderwebs affect her or not?

If so, that's a convenient witch trial. If the web burns her, she's a witch. If not, she's human.

Who are you even talking to?

Beato the elder snaps her fingers and a spider descends from the ceiling, leaving behind a strand of silk.

...I'm fine.
You are?
Huh?

What's going on?
That's what I would like to know. Why are you unharmed?
I don't know. What I don't understand is why you get burnt by touching a spiderweb...
I do not know. It has been like that since I first gained consciousness.
Then, are you...
No. I am not one of the evil spirits of Akujikishima. I am Beatrice, ruler of Rokkenjima's night. Even I do not know why I have the same weakness as this island's spirits of old...
Are spiderwebs the only things you can't handle?
As this Erika said, I can't touch the doorknob to Kinzo's study. That magic circle burns me. Trying to open the door to that study is like trying to pick a red-hot horseshoe out of a fire. What about you?
Huh? Scorpion magic circles, you mean?

Big sister, are you okay?! Your hand... aaaah!
Fear not. This scratch will heal quickly. However, it seems that you can handle it just fine.

Strange. Though you are my double, you are different from me in several ways.
While I might be able to touch the doorknob, if I ever get burnt like you did, I don't think I'd heal that easily...
It's as though you're a normal human.
Yes. Even I find it a little hard to believe that I'm a witch... I can't use magic like you, and I can't get strange burns or heal from them later... Father believed that I was a great witch reborn, but... I cannot believe that...
Who are you?
I... I am Beatrice. I was born for father's sake. And you, sister?
I am also Beatrice. I used magic to give Kinzo gold, and later became a soul and the formless witch that haunts this island.

Unlike me, it seems you possess a body.
Huh? Really?
Yes. I thought of it while listening to that Erika person. I am a witch who can use magic but has no body, and you are a witch who has a body but can use no magic. Eventually, perhaps we will become one, each filling in what the other lacks, and become the true, complete Beatrice.

Do you want to try?
Huh?
Hold out your hand. It may be possible for us to become one. I want to know as well. By becoming one with you, I want to learn about my future self.

...For me, being burned by spiderwebs is perfectly normal. However, you didn't even know about it. In the same way, you say that the reason you were born was for your father's sake. Apparently, that father is Ushiromiya Battler. I know him as a rare guest who only comes a few times a year, but I cannot understand what connection you and I have with such an infrequent guest. Surely, we must learn more about each other.
Yeah, you're right... I get the feeling that learning about each other will lead us to something very important.

October 4th, 10:59 PM
25 hours, 1 minute remaining

The prisoner awakens.

The bite marks from the witch are still on one finger, but at least the finger is still attached.

The door can barely open before the chain stops it. The windows are impossible to get through. The bathroom is a dead end.

What about calling for help?

Last time, the words wouldn't come.

It's like trying to yell underwater. Still no actual words.

The prisoner's voice is locked in here, along with their body. Even the sound of the chain is trapped within this room.

Something's strange. The chain used to be an impenetrable seal, but it's changed. Now it's just a normal chain lock.

The prisoner undoes the chain. The door is unsealed.

Will it open now?

The prisoner's head clears the doorway. Freedom is within sight. The voices of others can be heard nearby.

But no, it couldn't be that easy, could it?

The other end of that chain is attached to the chain lock on the door.

No matter what they do, the prisoner will be bound by the chain lock. So long as it exists, they can't escape through this door.

The prisoner returns to the room, and sets the chain lock. The collar vanishes. The lock is unset, the collar returns.

The prisoner returns to the outside of the door, and opens it to a tiny crack. Maybe they can reach through and set it from the inside

It's not quite long enough. Setting it from the outside by hand is impossible.

There's a closet in the room! Time to test a new plan.

When the prisoner returns to the closet, there is a single wire coat hanger inside.

The prisoner reshapes the hanger into a simple hook-like tool. Then, from the outside of the door...

It's the witch. The witch is inside this room.

As the prisoner wrestles for control of the hanger, they notice something written on thee door. More red letters.

The power of those words seals all attempts to set the chain from the outside.

The hooked end of the coat hanger has melted off. It's now useless as a tool.
