Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 6 Scene 16: The Hell of Regret

October 5th, 1986, 12:07 AM
23 hours, 53 minutes remaining

The siblings and their spouses take a break from the financial debate.

Kyrie's tired. She isn't really allowed to speak her mind at this event, not being one of Kinzo's children, but she still has to support Rudolf.

Apparently Jessica decided to wander back to the mansion to rest in her own room for a bit.

Ah, Zepar! Jessica's roulette of fate has chosen Kyrie!
What will you do, Jessica?! The roulette has chosen Kyrie, but you may reject that choice and spin the roulette again if you wish!
It doesn't matter whose life is sacrificed for this trial!
Jessica hadn't thought of anyone in particular, so her target was left to chance. She wandered the mansion, saying she would kill the first person she met.

Kyrie picks up on Jessica's odd silence, and turns around. What's wrong?

Jessica deflects by turning the conversation to her situation with Kanon.

It all sounds pretty complicated from an outside perspective.

Give up, and they'll win. Fight and win, and they'll lose.
In the end, it comes down to how far you're willing to go for your relationship.

Giving up here will make the rest of her life hell.
Kyrie knows this better than anyone.

Was it a diary?
It was more a collection of her thoughts. It was much less organized than a diary would've been. I found it and read it right after she passed away, but I needed to wait until I'd grown for several years before I could understand it.
I see. So, did it speak of Kyrie's worries about her marriage?
It was... practically a book of curses. It cleared up several questions I had vaguely felt back when I was six.
Did you not know about Asumu?
I think Battler talked to me about her when no one was around, but there was no way a grade schooler like me could understand. After all, I never even saw a picture of her. Mom had sent all the pictures with Asumu in them to Battler, leaving none behind in the house.
In his day, Rudolf had been very popular with a whole lot of women. Love, flirting, and pitting jealous lovers against each other was all a game to him.

Though even that might have been due to the skillful way Kyrie tried to catch Rudolf's gaze.
...Yeah, maybe. Mom was smart in many ways.
Between his charm and his crafty financial trickery, nobody was immune to Rudolf's spell.
What made Kyrie different was that, when it came to economics and turning a profit, she could be his equal.

Just like some people say men don't belong in the kitchen, there's also a sense that woman should stay out of financial affairs. It's normal for women to be treated by men. The details of how those 10,000 yen notes were scrounged up are vulgar, so they don't ask, don't know, don't care.
So you're saying that Kyrie viewed money from a man's perspective.
But mom was still a woman. I doubt she enjoyed seeing dad pampered by all the other girls.
So, she would rather have been his only one, instead of his number one...
Yeah. Though she served as dad's right hand person, she slyly got rid of the other women in the shadows. It was only a matter of time before mom would succeed in love.
When did Asumu come into the picture?
Kyrie and Asumu knew each other well from the very beginning. She was another very crafty woman.

Her mistake was pushing Rudolf too hard as a business partner. He came to need a woman who would help him relax.
That woman was Asumu.

And then Asumu took Rudolf away from her.

Before long, they were both pregnant. Asumu told dad about it right away, but mom did the opposite.
So, she was afraid that pregnancy would threaten her position as his business partner...
Apparently, mom didn't each much at the time, so her period was often irregular. Because of that, it took a really long time before she realized she was pregnant.
When did she notice?
It was after Asumu suddenly moved into dad's family register. Mom learned about her pregnancy test after that and plotted several times to split Asumu and dad apart, but...
That was about when Kyrie realized she'd been out-maneuvered.

Kyrie and Asumu had the same delivery date. Kyrie swore to, at least, raise her child to surpass Asumu's. That would be her last revenge.

Yeah. Asumu gave birth to Battler, but mom didn't give birth to anyone. Even mom's final hope of being left a spot as dad's second wife was destroyed... And despite that, mom was able to act in a very friendly way towards Battler. It was definitely a shock for me. To think that my gentle mother had held such negative emotions for Battler... and had managed to hide them.
She must have despised Battler.
Probably. If Asumu had had a stillbirth and mom had given birth to Battler, history might have changed in some way. It seems she thought that, if that had happened, dad might have divorced Asumu and married her instead.
Was that also written in that book where she kept her thoughts?
Yeah. After all, that was just a random thought, a delusion. Mom's resentment, as she chewed on the corner of her tear-stained bed sheets.
What she regrets is her arrogance. Because she was Rudolf's confidant, she thought she was the one he trusted the most.
Love needs to be nurtured before it can bear fruit, but once it does, it's meaningless if you don't harvest that fruit.

Act soon, or regret it forever.

If Kyrie was in Jessica's shoes, she wouldn't hesitate to go as far as murder.
Miracles only happen if you make them happen.

Kyrie was ready to commit murder, but nature took care of that for her when Asumu died of natural causes.
A true miracle.

This is the first time Jessica has seen the depths of the vortex of willpower named Kyrie.

Then what about her?
Does Jessica share that resolve?

Regrets in love will never fade. That's all she's trying to communicate.

She might have overdone it a bit, but hey. Good luck, Jessica!

A windstorm just barely misses Kyrie's head.

Also, she lied right at the beginning - this hallway isn't between her room and the guest house.
Kyrie came up with seven reasons she could have lied, and this was the worst-case scenario.

Jessica's fist flies again.
