St. Augustus Academy
What's All This Then?
St. Augustus Academy for Gifted Youths, or SAA, is a modern AU PSL. Taking place in a as-of-yet unnamed town in Oregon, in the year 2015, the characters attend the titular school - a shady and mysterious, but very fancy, private school for students grades 7 through 12. What most people don't know is that St. Augustus is actually a haven for those more than human.
The School
A big school in an otherwise small town. A lot of details yet to be worked out - possibly a boarding school. Very fancy facilities for everything, and a very secretive staff.
The school's Great Secret is that a shockingly large portion of the student body are various kinds of superhumans. Some of them have strange powers beyond mortal reckoning. Some are actually not human at all, but actually mythological creatures adopting human form. A lot of kids get mysteriously transferred to SAA, and it's usually because they had some kind of paranormal awakening. Others awaken to their newfound powers as soon as they join the community.
Most visitors to the academy are unaware of its strange nature. To those who aren't aware that anything's out of place, the students look normal - mundanes look right at them don't even see the horns, wings, or tails.
Using Magic
"Magic" is a general term for whatever the hell it is that these kids are capable of doing, although it takes many forms. Most of the time, it's quite difficult for magic to directly interfere with the real world - such powers are usually restricted to non-humans, and humans with such powers often find them hard to use and harder to control. Furthermore, school rules strictly forbidgetting caught using ever using such powers in the open, as it could lead to the school's secret getting out.
The more common way for these powers to be expressed is via Contract Duels. Despite the name, these can involve more than two people, in any combination of teams, so long as everyone involved agrees to fight. They work like this:
This strange and convoluted system is the de-facto system for all conflict resolution at St. Augustus. Can't decide who gets the top bunk? Mad at someone for dating your ex? Need 50 cents from the new kid to buy lunch? Dispute over who gets to be class rep? Contract Duel.
Non-Humans
Yeah, they've always been around. Vampires, youkai, werewolves, mermaids, you name it. These days, though, they're pretty good at passing as human - most non-humans (certainly all of the ones at school) have a Glamour - an ability to be seen as human. It doesn't actually change how you look, it just diverts attention. Someone who doesn't know what to expect at the school wouldn't even notice your wings, but they'd be able to see them as soon as someone pointed them out.
Non-humans are, on average, more powerful magic-users than humans. It's not a hard and fast rule by any means, but it's a point of tension among the student body.
The Faculty
Yes the teachers are in on it. They're all (with a couple exceptions) fully aware that the school is full of magical weirdos. Some of the teachers are magical weirdos themselves. They're very powerful, so be careful picking fights with the faculty.
The Game
I have no serious plan for what the game would actually be about, in a plot-having sense. Goof around and have school AU antics. Get in over-the-top metaphysical fights over stupid shit. If there's an actual overarching plot to be had, it can be introduced later.
The game is going to be private. If you're on my plurk timeline, you're invited. If you want to rope in someone I don't know, clear it with me first. I don't want this to get into full game size.

The more common way for these powers to be expressed is via Contract Duels. Despite the name, these can involve more than two people, in any combination of teams, so long as everyone involved agrees to fight. They work like this:
- The people who want to fight set the stakes of the fight - what the loser must do for the winner, what's being fought over.
- All the people fighting must gather in one place and mentally agree to the metaphorical contract of the fight.
- Time stops, and all the fighters are drawn into a pocket dimension, constructed out of the surrounding space and the mental landscapes of the fighters.
- Each fighter transforms, regaining their 'canonical' appearance, outfit, and set of superpowers.
- Fight until only one side is left standing (or all their enemies yield).
- When the fight ends, no actual injuries are maintained - however, the losing side must adhere to the contract set at the beginning of the duel.
This strange and convoluted system is the de-facto system for all conflict resolution at St. Augustus. Can't decide who gets the top bunk? Mad at someone for dating your ex? Need 50 cents from the new kid to buy lunch? Dispute over who gets to be class rep? Contract Duel.

This is some really great stuff.

Eric's plans!
Dipper Pines 100% normal human. He just got back from his summer vacation at Gravity Falls, and has a sneaking suspicion that SOMETHING at this school is seriously weird. He has a journal written by a mysterious past student (?) who had similar suspicions and lots of advice, and has had a number of strange encounters, but hasn't been able to get anything that would qualify as proof. 7th grader.
I might tack on more comments with other ideas later, but that's what I've got for now.

As an idea for a plot arc, though, we could theoretically use Athrun's father as a villain. It wouldn't be hard to adapt Patrick Zala into a role not unlike his canon role, though it would involve some normals finding out about the facade.

Lyle Dylandy
-Former Irish Air Corps pilot, now a political science teacher
-Possibly also teaches Brit lit
-Shows no evidence of magic outside of Contract Duels, in which he gets one of his Gundams
-Friendly guy, albeit good at his job
Nerdman
Vella Beastender
- Mundane human trying to figure out what the fuck
- Possibly descended from magical hunters in olden times??
- Generally friendly and caring
- Point and click protag ruthlessness applies
Heidi Dunkel
- party girl
- superhero powers gained from various magic bullshit
- various AU ideas running around about her that I'll hash out.
Celty Sturluson
- Just who is that masked woman?
- its a headless woman
- If she's a student, she probably looks super punk, always covering her head, wearing black, keeping a motorcycle somewhere, usually keeping to herself. Except no, she's basically a teddy bear.
- Mute, for obvious reasons. Knows sign language, but keeps a PDA on her person at all times
Jill Trent
- Engineering teacher
- Builds random shit
- Not scared of bullets
- Hella rad

Peridot the 't' is silent. 15? Big gay nerd who acts tough but she's not. She's a witch who specializes in turning things into peridot. In fact that's all she can do.
Hotaru Tomoe. Practice for f/psl? 13. Girl who's the reincarnation of a long-forgotten guardian of the solar system.
Espella Cantabella 17. uhhh idk what I'd do with her BUT. Espella. Come on.
Nadia Travis / Agria the Shadowless. 15. Not sure how to AU; human with weird fire powers? Either way she's violent and prone to fights. She'd take advantage of the Contract Duels constantly.
Yeah idk any of my other characters could work too. I'VE GOT A LOT OF THEM.

Thinking of:
Soma Cruz Student that has the ability to use black magic to force monsters to submit to his will and surrender a fraction of their power for him to use later on. Could be reincarnation of a bad guy, as per canon, or he survived a botched attempt to sacrifice him to summon something big and nasty and gain his powers as a result. Generally pretty easy going and friendly.
Probably some tension as his form of magic pings high on 'oh shi- that's DARK Magic'
Masahiko Yoichi A kitsune who got sent to the school in order to learn to behave if he's going to be an attendant to Inari by his parents. A natural shapeshifter and dreamwalker. Extremely mischievous but pious in his own weird way.
Expect practical jokes.
Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV A quiet boy, a summoner and an apprentice private eye when out of school. His family are part of a kind of magical law enforcement organization that's tasked with keeping the magical and nonhumans from running roughshod over humans, and he's expected to follow with. Quiet and withdrawn.
Flicker A geeky mechanically gifted kid who buries his nose in fantasy and chivalric romance books when he isn't building strange contraptions. Tends to let himself get pushed around and is a huge stickler for following the rules. Is really a dragon.
Sinbad Mr. Tisoni. A passionate literature teacher who shoves all the busywork onto his TAs. Doesn't like to talk his previous job, but can get distracted into telling the wacky misadventures of his youth. He is fiercely protective of his charges and cracks down hard on bullying. This time around he's an actual Djinn that's been freed some time ago and won't look too keenly on people expecting him to grant wishes.

- very sweet and cheerful
- does not know a lot about world
- often falls down

- Human student
- super hero
- super nerd
- chews gum literally all the time
Lapis Lazuli
- A polymorphic rock being from space. The gem in her back contains her entire being and the rest is a projection
- basically a super water bender
- is sad and doesn't like earth
Levi's ideas~
Rea Sanka: A normal looking girl, although the truth is she's...kind of dead. Yup, a zombie who needs to eat hydrangea leaves on a regular basis to remain sane. Otherwise she has a taste for human flesh. Student.
Sarasvati 'Sara' Chanda: An unbelievably lazy girl who happens to be a snake from the waist down. Spends most of her time gaming or napping in warm places. Student.
Kyrie Riven: A normal, albeit very shy and innocent girl. She's also a vampire of the non-sparkling variety. Student. She loves to cook and help others in need, but she's pretty gullible. In her setting, she's actually a priestess with healing magic. Even as a vampire. Dunno how that'd fit into this if at all, but I'll figure something out. Definitely a student.
These are just the characters I thought would be fun to toss at this. Thoughts? Nue's the only definite one. But I have literally dozens of potential characters I could work into this! (Although I will only be playing two-three.)
aaaah, screw it, adding another!
Hina Kagiyama: Pretty much the embodiment of bad luck. She'd be the kind of creepy, but motherly guidance counselor.
no subject
Jones: Definitely apping, although as more of a background character. Vice Principal. Nobody seems to know anything about her. Possibly a robot.
Kamala Khan: Student, 10th grade. Muslim nerd who can get huge. Secret superhero.
Haruka Haruno: It's probably only a matter of getting enough episodes before this happens, and why not try her out here first? Student, 8th grade. Extremely excited magical girl who wants to be a princess.
Satori Komeiji: Student. Mind-reading nonhuman jerk.
Sara Sado: Younger version. Like her college stoner tanuki self, but still clinging to the shreds of her weeaboo phase.
Kasu's Ideas
--Poltergeist, appears somewhat translucent, tends to float
--Power level is a bit lower than DDC Extra Stage bulletspam nonsense but still pretty high
--but she's too laid back to really unleash it too much so that's fine
--Drumline (duh)
Ran Cossack [Megaman/Bob & George]
--A robot masquerading as a tiny human boy
--Has ability to shoot mega laserbeams and die really really easily
--Has a "respawn" cabinet that looks like a janitor's closet where he's rebuilt if he goes down
Mike Schmidt??? [Five Nights at Freddie's]
--Security guard
--Night watch
--Done with all of your bullshit
Time, a.k.a. "Tony Watchman" [Don't Hug Me I'm Scared]
--History teacher
--Avatar for the literal embodiment of all of time
--Please don't try to piss him off
--Please
Big Band/Ben Birdland [Skullgirls]
--Band teacher
--Relatively normal himself but has a musical mech suit
--Super laid back
--Jazz puns
Ginger Ale
I prefer ginger beer over ginger ale, but that's just me.

Naomi Kimishima - Science teacher? Nurse? Slightly shady-looking (healing and death-related powers don't help), but actually mostly just kind of bitter because history. Pretty no-nonsense, but she'll relax if students make a good impression.
Ivar - Human, obnoxious kid in his sophomore year (year 10). Talks to animals, full of himself because his family's old and traditional. Quick to start fights/duels, but tends to lose them.
Ideas off the top of my head: rival schools/houses? Split up students, or use NPCs. Basically add a different element of competition.
Ginger ale is pretty good stuff.

- 12-13 years old
- Some unidentified sort of non- or part-human, with a tail and sharp teeth (and a couple other anatomical anomalies which aren't relevant to day-to-day life) and an impossibly good sense of smell. So good she can smell all sorts of stuff she shouldn't be able to, like memories and magic.
- Terrible, awful, foul-mouthed kleptomaniac brat. Will steal anything not bolted down and insult anything with ears to hear her. Will skip class whenever she can get away with it and sleep through the classes she's forced to attend.
- Completely illiterate due to what appears to be a really intense case of dyslexia. Even if she was willing to put in the work, it's not clear she could overcome it.
- Her father is a perfectly mundane - but very wealthy - mob boss.
- Basically she doesn't fit in at a fancy private school at all, and is only still there by dint of her father's generosity to the school.
- She has no powers useful in a Contract Duel, although intelligent magical constructs seem to naturally love her and will listen to her even if programmed not to.
Duane Adelier from Unsounded
- He's a zombie
- But an intelligent one!
- Also, a wizard who keeps his face glamoured to look mostly normal...although he's an awful liar so if you make eye contact with him it'll far apart.
- He's a pompous, overly erudite priest with a self-loathing streak a mile wide.
- Probably teaches religious studies/theology.
Pearl from Steven Universe
- Her body is merely energy projected by a sentient gemstone - although you can touch it and interact with it with anybody else, it's not really Pearl. Pearl is the gem.
- Uptight and proper
- Would teach dance
- Prone to incredibly cheesy fight dialogue when she gets into a Contract Duel

Thoughts on characters I already have journals for:
Char Aznable
-The most terrifying PoliSci teacher and/or fencing instructor
-May or may not be on the no fly list
Quattro Bajeena
-Totally different guy from Char Aznable, but same general idea
Meetra Surik
-Zen hippie philosophy teacher or school counselor
-Actually served in the military, but not allowed to talk about it
Homura Akemi
-Comes in either awful nerd or cool loner who's secretly still an awful nerd varieties
-Taking more classes than are physically possible
-"There's no rule saying I can't carry explosives into a Contract Duel"
Asuka Langley Soryu
-Unfortunate combination of annoying know-it-all and bully charisma
-Does not shut up about herself
-Secretly convinced that all her friends actually hate her, may or may not be right
-No idea how to do supernatural stuff for her, would need to talk to other mecha people

The Guindo's ideas
Duncan Heimdall Jackson (age 30, but perpetually 25 physically)
- The campus doctor. Since, like, OBVIOUSLY you can't take your crazy magical injuries and fantasy-monster-puberty questions to a normal doctor at a regular hospital.
- there's a very popular rumour that he gained his powers by murdering a god and eating his heart
- it's not true
- it was a demi-god
- so he's basically a level 255 cleric in an MMO that caps at level 100. but also an actual doctor with like an MD and everything, too.
- kind of a jaded, snarky asshole type who's actually really personable and easy to get along with despite that. he gets exasperated and frustrated easily but he genuinely cares about people. also kind of an awkward nerd.
- don't ask him about the demi-god thing, wow, that's fucking rude, HA HA HA HE DIDN'T. KILL ANYONE. SHUT UP GO AWAY WHERE IS YOUR HALL PASS, DETENTION
Valerie "Oriole" Langley (age 14)
- A magical girl with a witch theme and shadow magic (along with other assorted basic utility magic like lighting fires and shit).
- Who is also a math prodigy
- And who will remind you of that. Constantly. At length. By the way did you know she came in second in her state trimathalon. has she mentioned that lately. did you know.
- Basically she's really full of herself and thinks she's way more important than she is, kind of a know-it-all, but is thankfully redeemed by actually caring about learning new stuff and being genuinely interested in new things.
those are the two that i brainstormed up ideas for on the way home; we'll see if i think of something for anything else at work tomorrow.

Also Duncan could get assigned as an advisor for people w/primarily healing powers?? He wouldn't actually teach any classes but he'd be available for help with healer problems and tutoring.Nah screw it, i'm gonna say he teaches a class on healing magic, but probably only one session offered because low volume of healer students.

Artemis Athenos Valkyriakos (age 17)
- Member of the royal bloodline in Crete (pretend Crete remained a sovereign kingdom instead of getting wrapped into Greece at some point), crown prince
- secretly terrified of the responsibility of ruling and a habitual slacker of responsibilities in general
- regal and dignified and poised and very concerned with always looking perfect but actually kind of an insecure mess underneath all of that because he's a fucking teenager so of course he is
- being so dignified all the time makes it really fun to throw awkward and/or embarrassing situations at him, so there's that
- his family's magic is based on gemstones and body modifications, it's pretty hardcore
- his personal magic is gravity-based. he mostly uses it as a form of telekinesis.

Rinfally Carpenter (technically only, like, 5, but looks indeterminate young adult age)
- Robot
- He was basically built by a mad scientist to be a bodyguard/personal henchbot
- Mad scientist was the head of a popular tech corp who started using his legit business to fund some supervillainy; Rinfally was "rescued", along with several other AI projects, when the government stepped in and shut the whole thing down
- What do you even do with a sapient robot?? He's too good an asset to just dismantle, but damn he has a lot of social/moral/ethical learning to do
- He's like "if i'm going to be a person from now on, maybe i should get the proper experience of socialization in a natural environment?" and so his handlers decide to send him to school. SAA is chosen because, obviously, it's like the one school he can go to without anybody raising flags about him acting like a weirdo robot
- Personality-wise he's very impressionable and literal and still kind of getting the hang of this "showing emotions" and also "reading emotions" thing
- Even though he looks like he should be college-aged he's totally in the same year as the 12-year-olds. He insisted on it. YOU CAN'T JUST SKIP GRADES OKAY.

- Is a dragon. Has a tail and tiny wings, and the wings can get big enough to fly, and she can go full dragon, but hasn't in canon yet, so maybe not???
- Would be some wealthy important powerful person's daughter.
- Is interested in historical architecture.
- Smart.
- Athletic.
- Can sing.
- Is beautiful.
- Pretty nice too.
- If that niceness didn't seem condescending and she weren't incredibly competitive, she'd be sickeningly perfect.
- Has a giant robot in canon, is a princess, sings while using her magic princess ring to activate its super mode. Yeah.
- Is from a skeevy canon too tho so if that's a problem, then ignore me.
- Sports team or club related CR?
Katina Tarask 25 years old.
- Ex-military gym teacher, a normal.
- Got caught up in supernatural shit in the service and recruited by the St. Augustus afterward.
- Secondary role as defense against serious shit going down.
- Intimidates more students than a lot of the supernatural teachers. Uses this to avoid duels against students who could beat the snot out of her with BS powers.
- Drags other teachers out drinking.
- Loud.
Lissa is 15.
- Daughter of old aristocratic family. Her father was a douchebag.
- Highly gifted with healing powers, and has the knack to learn other magic, but hasn't been bothered to do so yet.
- No duels for her, but she'll gladly patch you up.
- Perky and cheerful, and generally well liked.
- Will still prank the heck out of you.
- Frogs are her secret weapon.
- Does not like mystery meat.
- Very middle-of-the-road in her studies.
This journal is hilariously appropriate

...honestly, I have other potential ideas but some of them depend on what others may or may not do, SO. We can hold on that.
A couple questions!
1) Everyone's tossing about several ideas, what kind of character-per-player cap might you be looking at?
2) Since this seems open ended for PSL stuff, will everyone have to decide on things at the start, or will people be able to app in new characters along the way?
3) If there IS some eventually plot things, might there be room for say, one to initiate threats (or even just challenges of some sort) from outside the school? Eventually, of course! This is just popping into my head because there is a thought of a character I COULD inevitably use, but would only really work as an outlying factor and only maybe for a limited time. Basically this also relates to the last two questions.
no subject
2) New apps along the way is fine.
3) Deferring answering this until later.

Cooro
-7th grader
-Had a near death experience when he was very little, and his soul called out to the crows nearby. Some of their spirit infused in him and now he can cause crow wings to appear on his back, and feathers on his arms.
-Cute and crafty; he doesn't mind bending
or breakingrules.-Loves making friends!
-And eating. Especially apples. But eating in general is cool.
-Totally okay with hanging out with normal kids and being vaguely puzzled that they can't see the wings and stuff even if he doesn't ever actually point it out.
Kanon
-High school senior
-Can make (metal) things explode! But it's hard to notice that it's just metals she can affect. Either way, she's dangerous.
-Very pretty, very vain, expects everyone to love her for being cute despite being extremely bratty and unpleasant.
-Also generally kind of batshit and will definitely abuse her powers if someone so much as annoys her. Discussions would need to be had OOCly regarding this, I'm sure.
-She plays piano, but since it doesn't fit with her image, it'd be the type of thing you're more likely to stumble on.
Tsubasa
-9th grader.
-Has the power of shadow manipulation, which translates to a hell of a lot of things, notably causing people to move through their shadows, stretching his shadow and teleporting his body to follow, giving shadows a physical form for various uses (like lock picking), freezing things with their shadows, etc.
-Uses the above for mischief because why not.
-Probably got cursed by an NPC for the aforementioned pranks, resulting in a star-shaped tattoo on his face.
-Usually pretty chill, will totally big brother younger students if they exist.

Byakuren Hijiri
- one of the teachers probably
- looks pretty much human but she's a fucking ancient youkai witch
- can use her usual reinforcement magic
- actually mmmmmost of her background is easy enough to AU here so I'll leave it at that
Atsuko Maeda the 13th
- goddamn I want to play space idols......
- but no prolly a 11th or 10th grader
- some kind of music-based powers
- everyone in her family is a descendant of some sort of super famous musician so they all take her name when they hit a certain age
ripping off Tomochin for easier AU purposes lmaoNui Harime
- also 11th grader
- what is with Nui's family sending her away in these AUs good lord
- maybe she was just too crazy
- goddamn nui reign in your homicidal tendencies why dontcha
- either way she has thread-based regeneration powers.........

Hiroshi:
- Totally mundane, very smart kid into science.
- Underwent a really traumatic experience involving a supernatural monster and a lot of dead friends
- Sent to St. Augustus secretly as a form of "therapy
- Is vaguely aware of the supernatural elements but is HEAVILY in denial of it
Tojiko Soga
- Theoretically that "ghost that haunts the school," except at some point she said "fuck that" and now goes whereever the hell she wants out of SHEER FORCE OF WILL
- Really digs electrical engineering, especially robots
- The kind who calls you "turd" then high-fives you. I don't know.
Ran Yakumo
- Math teacher; the type who has to be reminded to dumb it down
- Is REALLY OBVIOUSLY a fox lady to those aware of the supernatural; has slightly vulpine features for those who aren't.
- Super nice, but a firm disciplinarian
- Really likes cats
Shinmyoumaru Sukuna
- Secretly an Inchling who makes herself tall with a magic item to go to classes
- Gullible as HELL
- But really sweet
- Strongly into student labor politics

Illyasviel von Einzbern

• Homunculus
• Acts like a child most of the time
• Trolls the shit out of people (unless Prisma, where she's nicer!!)

Mikuru Asahina
• Possible history teacher??
• Has time-related abilities
• Is generally a nice teacher unless you fuck with her or her students
I'm probably pretty sure about Illya, though I'm not sure if I want to bring her as Prisma Illya verse or regular which changes her personality severely. If anybody is interested in anyone else in my muselist, I can totally work with someone for an AU.

I do have a character to offer but I'm having a time figuring out how to AU her: she's an NPC in that online Final Fantasy game, mainly in the Rogue Class quests. So here's the rundown that I may have:
~She is non human, being a cat person with ears and tail (technically the race is called miqo'te but saying cat lady is funnier for some reason)
~She will be a student, 11th grade maybe.
~She will have some magics such as a healing spell and the ability to hide herself.
And that's all I have so if I'm allowed to play, I would appreciate all the ideas and zaniness!
Junebug's ideas
Erszébet Héderváry: Or Hungary, from Hetalia. Definitely an AU, so she'd be a normal human. well, normal with super powers! probably a 12th grader, and a tomboy. I would love for her to have super-human strength, but other than that i'm not sure about ideas. could also keep her 100% human who just likes to fight a lot.
Teto Kasane: from the Vocaloid franchise (though she's not even a Vocaloid at all). a prankster, but also major tsundere who uses the power of her voice to either destroy or repair. again, a student, most likely a junior.
Weiss Schnee: from RWBY. a spoiled heiress who uses ice magic. another junior. (if you play Blake Belladonna, i would love to play out this ship so bad).
if you want to play/plot with any of these characters, please poke me! might get more ideas later, but these three ladies i can start playing with right away!

He and his brother Red don't get along, but he tries not to let that get in his way. Has nontrivial powers, and claims to be basically the guardian of Earth. Legend says that he sleeps in his office. (But actually just pops back to his home via teleportation abuse.)
Megumi Aino (HappinessCharge Precure) - Only if I don't play Blue. Eighth-grade. Super-cheery girl with a good attitude, a fairly bad singing voice, and a desire to share her love with the whole world. Lives with her mother, who is in below-average health. Relies on having a solid social structure, but makes friends easily. Human, but has access to the power of Pretty Cure; becomes Cure Lovely.
Tsubomi Hanasaki (Heartcatch Precure) - Eighth-grade. Quiet girl with a strong resolve, once she gets going. Extremely well-versed in flowers. Easily caught up in others' activities. Has no social presence. Human, but has access to the power of Pretty Cure; becomes Cure Blossom. Not a high-priority app.
Ethan Landes (AU: Syaoran Li, Cardcaptor Sakura) - Eighth-grade. Willful boy that doesn't put up with things he doesn't agree with. Not book smart, but makes up for it with knowing the ways of the world. Solid at soccer. A little distant, but forges strong friendships if you can get through to him. Still struggling with his mother's death. Skilled in martial arts. Powers may vary; if fully-powered, has a magic sword and Chinese charms.
