Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 8 Scene 2: The United Family

<< | ^^ | >>

As always, the tale of October 4th begins with Battler screaming into the ocean.

The second voice isn't screaming, it's laughing.

This is the first time they've managed to get all five cousins together.

Ange managed to power through her sickness due to her overwhelming desire to make it to the family conference this year.

BGM: Hope

Behind Battler, Maria and Ange argue over who got second and who got third.

Battler's great speed is a testament to how often he oversleeps and has to run to make it somewhere. Like he did this morning.

In the mansion, news of the guests' arrival makes it to the family.

The guests are unpacking in the guest house, and will arrive here afterwards.

Despite his age, Kinzo is in high spirits, as usual.

The conference only comes once a year. There can be no compromising on this issue!

He'll be down as soon as he's ready.

Gohda prepares to greet the guests with style and taste.

It's a bit unorthodox to let a servant taste something before the guests of honor, but Gohda believes that the one serving the food must always know how it tastes.

Gohda takes his work very seriously, but that doesn't mean he can't enjoy it as well.

All the servants are eager and determined to make this a family conference to remember.

And here are the guests!

Just a little magic charm from the resident magic expert, Maria.

The adults all comment on Battler's height, while the kids all comment on his cowardice. Apparently it's because Rudolf would go overboard taking him on amusement park rides when he was little.

Krauss reports that dad will be down in a minute. Everyone knows he's probably up in the study, panicking about his necktie again.

Despite all his fretting, he always ends up wearing the same one.

Shannon recommends the pumpkin team, emboldened by Gohda's suggestion to try it herself first. Everything's coming together nicely.

The lord of the manor approaches.

BGM: HANE

Ange is frozen in place, unable to process what's going on.

Maria is first to respond to the call to action, having brought a gift for Kinzo. All of the other relatives brought gifts, too.

Kyrie has something Ange can give to him, so that she isn't left out.

Genji quietly reminds the head that dignity is a thing he's supposed to have.

But this round of trick-or-treating goes both ways! Genji produces a sack, and draws a package from it, which Kinzo presents back to Maria.

Dignity.

The head's dignity manages to last a full ten seconds longer than last year before Genji gives up.

The other cousins hand their gifts in, and are met in turn with overwhelming emotion. Particularly one who's been missed for the past six years.

All that matters for now is Kinzo's heartfelt joy that Battler has returned to the family.

Focus, Ange. It's time to give Kinzo your present.

This is the expression of the Kinzo that Ange remembers.

Why? Why is the atmosphere different for her than it is for everyone else?

Kinzo slowly, sternly reaches out to touch the present Ange offers.

Kinzo's forgotten about his dignity again.

Ange receives her gift in return. Each gift Kinzo gives is a different size and wrapped in a different paper.

Can this be true?

Does Kinzo pick out these gifts every year?

The adults each offer Kinzo a gift, each receiving one in return. However, Gohda announces lunch before they can open them.

Ange clings to the gift Kinzo gave her, stunned beyond speech.

Conversation flows freely around the table, everyone catching up after being apart all year.

For the adults, this conference is a chance to escape the burdens of adulthood for one day. Their conversation is cheerful and carefree.

Even Kinzo doesn't shout at anyone.

Maria's leading the conversation among the cousins, sharing her bottomless well of Halloween trivia.

Nothing is forced or unnatural.

Everyone is simply happy.

If it meant Kinzo would get to see his cute grandchildren for longer, he would pray for rain every day.

But why not leave Rokkenjima, if he misses everyone so? At his age, why not at least move to Niijima, so he could be closer to the nearest hospital?

Lunchtime is over. Kinzo suggests the grandchildren all go out to enjoy the beach and the flowers.

Ange follows, but her expression is still uncertain.
