Let's Play Umineko, Episode 1 Scene 12: The Massacre

<< | ^^ | >>

Nanjo Terumasa

Kinzo's attending physician and long time friend. He once ran a hospital on Niijima, but he turned it over to his son and now enjoys his old age in peace.

Now that Kinzo's constant suspicion has reached extraordinary heights, Nanjo is one of the very few people he trusts. Thanks to Nanjo's big-hearted nature, he has been able to continue his friendship with Kinzo despite the latter's tendency to fly into a rage at the slightest provocation.

October 5th, 1986. Shortly after 8:00 AM. Six people have gone missing.

And there are six bodies in the storehouse.

As Natsuhi and Eva keep Jessica and George out, Battler goes in. He witnesses the full extent of the carnage.

There is nobody to catch Battler, because the ones who would normally do so

are among the deceased.

Nanjo said that their bodies had been damaged after death, but that was an understatement.

All six of the bodies have had their faces crushed and gouged beyond recognition.

The only recognizable face among them is that of Krauss - only half of his face was brutally destroyed.

Battler loses all composure, screaming and crying at the sight of the massacre.

Not five, George.

There's one more. Way at the back.

She died, as brutally and cruelly as the other five.

Nothing can change this.

Hideyoshi refuses to let George in. It's the only kind-hearted thing to do.

Shannon last left George with a wonderful smile. She wouldn't want him to see this instead.

Half of her face remains. The other half has been destroyed.

So, George has just one request. One thing he has to know.

She's wearing his ring.

That was her answer.

At Natsuhi's orders, Kanon escorts the cousins back to the mansion.

Next step is to contact the authorities. There's no way around it: This was murder.

This is a crime scene, so they mustn't disturb the site any more than they already have. Natsuhi orders a new lock placed on the shutter.

Questions are stacking up, all of them unpleasant.

There is only one key to the storehouse. Before now, Kanon took it from the servant room.

So, the killer took the key from the servant room, put the bodies in the storehouse, then returned the key where they found it.

It's strange on several levels.

Why return the key?
Why move the bodies to the storehouse?
Why mark it with that strange symbol?

It was as if they wanted the bodies to be discovered.

Natsuhi takes custody of the old storehouse key. With the new lock in place, it should be useless, but the police will want it.

The storehouse is sealed once more, with the six bodies inside it.

The adults return to the mansion.

October 5th, 1986, 8:45 AM

Back in the mansion, Maria watches TV, unaware of the tragedy that has befallen the family.

Nobody is sure what to say to her.

Everyone deals with the shock in their own way. Natsuhi, trying to take charge after the loss of her husband, continues to give directions.

Genji is sent to contact the police via emergency radio. Natsuhi and Eva head to Kinzo's study.

Then, Kumasawa comes in with even more bad news.

Oh, what NOW?

It's not another massacre, at least, but there are traces of blood remaining on the floor of the dining room.

When you think about it, Eva and Hideyoshi excused themselves from the debate around midnight, but it was still going on. That would make the remaining discussion participants Krauss, Rudolf, Kyrie and Rosa from that point on.

All of those people are now dead.

On the pretense of not disturbing another important crime scene, Battler urges everyone out of the dining hall to keep Jessica from having a panic attack.

The bodies in the storehouse were horrible, but they were outside. With that level of disaster, the mansion could still feel a little bit secure.

Not anymore. Beyond a doubt, the six were killed inside the mansion.

But the bad news doesn't end there.

The radio and phone are both down. Krauss's boat is out for repairs, and won't be back until the typhoon ends.

Rokkenjima is perfectly cut off from the outside world.

Maria has finally figured out that something has happened, thanks to another outburst from Jessica. She knows that there has been a murder.

Her reaction is not normal.

When Maria tries to respond, it's quiet. Battler can't quite make out some of what she's saying.

Before he can ask her to say that again, he is interrupted by raised voices.

Natsuhi is back from her visit with Kinzo, and furious about the downed radio.

Now, how did the visit with father go?
