Let's Play Umineko, Episode 3 Scene 21: The Numbers

<< | ^^ | >>

At the guest house, George has been missing for over an hour. Battler, Jessica and Nanjo all confirm it.

Krauss and Natsuhi are still missing, too. All the windows are locked from the inside. Eva says that nobody came down the whole time. The guest hosue is a closed room.

So, how did all these people escape?

They are not hiding in the guest house.

It's only a matter of time before someone suggests leaving to visit the mansion.

Battler finds a single window on the second floor from which a person could escape.

However, it's impossible for them to lock the window again, isn't it?

It's quite possible, if somebody on the inside locked it.

The implications are quite bad, though - of the four people here, it would mean that one of them would have to be an accomplice.

That's the odd part, though - why lock the window again? With this few survivors left, it would be far preferable to make it look like the killer was someone on the outside.

Nanjo nervously puts forth the theory that the witch might actually be real, but Battler shuts it down immediately. There's no way witches are real.

This locked window is a message from the witch, trying to establish that she is real.

Ultimately, their decision is to head outside. Everyone is coming, because nobody wants to be left alone here.

Krauss and Natsuhi are dead. It looks like strangulation, according to Nanjo.

The seventh and eighth twilights are complete.

If the culprit appears now for the ninth twilight, Jessica swears that she'll kill him.

Nanjo protests against further splitting up, but Eva won't hear any of it. She insists on going alone to find George, and leaves the other three behind.

Like hell! Battler and Jessica chase after her, one intent on protecting her, the other intent on exacting revenge on the culprit. Nanjo tags along too, out of a desire to not die alone.

Battler fully expects to die, but before he does, he wants to burn the truth into his eyes.

They catch up with Eva at the door to the mansion, and while searching for George, they find something on the parlor door.

The magic circle was here this morning, but it's different now. Something was added to it.

07151129.

It was written recently. What could those numbers mean?

Despite saying it probably isn't important, Eva writes the number down on the back of an old receipt.

Battler notices something odd about the numbers. 0715 - July 15th.

That's his birthday.

Between Nanjo and Eva's recollections, the possibility that it's Kinzo, Genji, Rosa, Maria, Eva, Natsuhi or George's birthday is denied. Jessica adds herself, Krauss, Natsuhi, Shannon and Kanon to the pile. None of them have a birthday on November 29th.

The door is locked, of course. Eva unlocks it, enters, and screams.

George is dead. Nanjo confirms it.

The murders didn't end at the eighth twilight.

None will be left alive.

People seem to be dying faster and faster. At this rate, nobody will live for the ship arriving tomorrow.

Furthermore, people's actions have gotten stranger and stranger as the day went on.

Battler's train of thought is derailed by a fight in the parlor.

Eva was on the first floor of the guest house when Krauss and Natsuhi went missing.

But what if Jessica knew about George disappearing from the second floor?

The witch's goal in locking the window was exactly this. She wanted to make the survivors doubt each other, and fall apart.

But if that's true, then how did she lock it?

The gunshot didn't come from the outside.

It came from here.

Jessica grabbed at Eva, a fight broke out, and the gun went off.

Either a graze from a bullet or a burn from the discharge injured Jessica's eyes. She can't see a thing.

Nanjo offers to take her to the servant room to see what he can do.

Half delirious with shock and anger, Eva flees out into the corridor. Battler chases her.

The group has split in half once more.

Jessica is confident that Eva was trying to kill her, just as she's certain that Eva killed her parents.

There's no witch, there's no 19th person. There's just Eva Ushiromiya. She killed them all.

While she suffers, Nanjo steps out into the hallway to see if the others are back yet.

BGM: Black Lilliana

Nanjo doesn't understand what's going on, but he does understand, at least, that this is a time to beg for his life.

At the ninth twilight, the witch shall be revived, and none shall be left alive.

Jessica understands from that noise that Nanjo is now dead.

She's blind, alone, and a killer is right outside the door.
