Let's Play Umineko, Episode 4 Scene 9: The Real World

<< | ^^ | >>

As their master reads peacefully, the Seven Stakes of Purgatory bicker loudly.

Mammon is reading of her shoulder. Greed includes a thirst for knowledge.

Since the first day, Ange's magical power grew quickly. She can easily summon all seven sisters at once now.

Nobody but her can see them, of course. Still, for the first time since she came to this awful school, Ange has some friends of her own.

Sure, accordng to the account in the message bottle, they attacked her family once, but she doesn't hate them for that.

Ange decides to take a break from studying, and everyone shows up to play.

As usual, the seven sisters all descend upon poor Sakutaro. Such is the curse of those born adorable.

Maria's Magic of Origins is still young. Creating a specific friend who Ange would like is no easy task. Summoning is much, much easier than creation or resurrection.

Still, some day, Ange might be able to accomplish such great feats. Maybe.

The most important part is believing that it will happen. Doubt is a powerful anti-magic force.

The ten people gathered - one human, one witch, and eight summoned familiars - play the time away cheerfully.

But ten isn't enough. Rudolf, Kyrie, Battler, George, Jessica... some day, everyone will be part of the fun.

That is Ange's dream. Until she makes it come true, the Stakes will serve faithfully by her side.

Unfortunately, the world of humans hasn't changed much.

The class's performance is measured collectively, so one bad grade brings down the average. What a great system!

As Ange's classmates shower her with insults, the Stakes shower her classmates with insults. They can't be heard, though.

The problem is quickly identified by the group as being Ange's uncooperative personality. The first step to fixing this is for her to be made to understand her own shortcomings. How about a letter of regret, written in her own words, then read out loud in front of the class?

The bullying disguised as study hall continues.

Beyond the jeering crowd, she can see her real friends, watching with compassion.

For her sake, the demon stakes hurl their rage at Ange's tormentors.

Oops, back to reality. They can't hear those voices.

Then die.

The Stakes are so powerful that no human should be able to oppose them.

So why is Lucifer hesitating during her Master's moment of need?

How could you forget, Ange?

Magic isn't real.

The moment that a dream dies.

Lucifer's form shatters like a stained glass window.

Lucifer tries to talk back and explain. She's the next one to shatter under Ange's gaze.

There's no way they can act in front of this many people. The anti-magic field is too strong.

Ange isn't interested in excuses, either. Satan is the third to go.

Even one-on-one, it wouldn't be possible. As Belphegor explains, Ange's magical training isn't to the point of being able to materialize them like that.

Belphegor shatters.

None of the others have anything they can do but beg for their lives.

Asmodeus and Beelzebub shatter. One left.

The role of furniture is to help their Master. What their Master cannot do, they cannot do.

Furniture is furniture. It doesn't kill. The master uses it to kill.

Mammon dares her - deny her. Use the same jeering that's being thrown at her right now. Kill her first and last friend.

And then there were none.

Maria reassures Sakutaro - they aren't dead. The shattered bodies are merely discarded shells. They'll be able to meet again some day.

Ange doesn't give a shit about the witch's alliance. Next, she asks Maria and Sakutaro to disappear freely, so that she doesn't have to kill them herself.

Despite her attempts, Ange can't erase Sakutaro. Sakutaro is Maria's furniture, not hers.

Denial is the greatest scorn a witch can express. Ange's anti-magic toxin is eating away at Sakutaro.

She's faced this assault before. Seems awful familiar, considering what Ange's dealing with right now.

So ends Ange's peaceful days.

There was one observer, so there was one truth. Ange concluded that they were all a daydream.

This isn't the real Ange.

The real Ange is the one back in the classroom full of jeers.

Ange acknowledges reality. She acknowledges that she had slipped into a daydream to avoid this world.

Ange starts to improvise, deviating from the speech that was prepared.

This is a world of pointless illusions and empty dreams. Nobody is coming to save her.

There's no reason for Ange to exist. She died 12 years ago.

A long, uncomfortable silence, but the outcome is the same.

The girls in her fantasy couldn't kill when she asked them to. The girls in reality won't kill her when she asks them to, either.

Both worlds are dreams.

It's time to wake up.

Can Ange... become happy like this?
If Ange believes that this is the only way, then it is the only way. If she cannot accept the blue bird in the cage for what it is, then she must go and search forever.
Uryu... Maria, are you... breaking off relations with Ange?
...No, nothing like that. I only did that because that was what Ange wanted. We witches are sometimes persecuted, but we always remain by everyone's side. Our aid can always be asked for.
Will the day come... when Ange will play with us again?
Or it might be forgotten and never come. In the human world, we call that growing up and drifting away. Still...
