Let's Play Umineko Chiru, Episode 8 Scene 20: The Writer and the Cat
<< | ^^ | >>

Willard H. Wright & Ushiromiya Lion
While carrying out a job as an Inquisitor of Heresy at Bern's request, Willard met Lion.
In the final stages of the tale, he rejected the tragedy presented by the Witch of Miracles. In search of a happy ending, they have wandered through the sea of framents, putting their lives on the line.
They are now under Lady Lambdadelta's protection.

The great noise of the goat horde doesn't penetrate the chapel walls at all.

The book is there, resting on the altar.

Ange grips the key given to her by Battler. However, there's still something between her and the truth.

Only the Game Master has the authority to break the seal, but Battler isn't the only Game Master on this board.

Suddenly, Beatrice is knocked away, and Battler is encased in a barrier.

Beato will have to handle Ange herself. This is a closed room barrier.

Battler urges Beato to head to the chapel, and turns to greet the new guest.

"Chains" is an appropriate word here. Why not use those for the duel?

BGM: Dread of the Grave - More Fear (Remake)

Battler and Erika are both sealed within closed rooms. Unsetting the chain is easy, but the hard part is entering the opponent's room from there.
The duel begins.

It wasn't a suicide, it wasn't an accidental death, it wasn't a death by illness! I really was killed by you, Battler!
It was a murder committed by slipping poison gas through the crack of the door, by filling the room with water and drowning you, by sucking the oxygen out of the room and making you suffocate!
There was no poison gas, there was no drowning, there was no death by suffocation! Hahahahahahahahahaha, a closed room murder with poison gas? Death by drowning? Suffocation?! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Crazy, right? It's funny, isn't it?
Good! Ushiromiya Battler committed suicide, he died in an accident, he died by illness! Time for me to test your closed room!
Red truth! Ushiromiya Battler was stabbed to death! Let's say the weapon was a knife, stuck right into his back!
I'll take that challenge with the red truth! Furudo Erika was stabbed to death! The weapon was a knife, stuck right in her back!
Interesting! I'll tear your closed room to biiiiiiiiits!

Is this the first time I've fought you directly?
Oh, is it now? Very well, let's see what you've got. However, Battler isn't here at the moment. When he's not around, I sometimes forget to hold back.
What a coincidence. I feel the same.
Okay, I'll play along with your game. Repeat it!

And then, you see, all of the prize money will go to Hachijo.

BGM: Love Examination

The executives immediately start groveling. Hachijo says she isn't at all interested in the money, but some pet food might be nice.

The cat in question meows vaguely from the bookshelf.

Hachijo kicks out the people from the publishing company, having tired of their fawning. Children of man can be so dull.

The cat reveals its true form once more.

Hachijo tosses Bernkastel a plum, and she turns back into a cat to snatch it out of midair.
A servant comes to report that the guests are gone, but she asks not to be disturbed. She's going to do a little writing.

Tales are meant to be written in ink. Only once she's committed it to paper does she go back and type it out on a typewriter. Bern thinks the whole thing is stupid.

Hachijo's pen brings a new world into existence.

For once, she's writing a tale to give to a human. A tale she promised to write for an old Reader of hers.

All she wants is the truth. The real story of Rokkenjima.

No matter what Hachijo writes, Ange won't accept it. Her stories are just illusions.

Eva never shared that book. Hachijo would like to resepect that final intent, if she can.

In her old age, she's learned that not knowing is more precious than knowing. After all, you can move from not knowing to knowing, but then you can never move back to not knowing again.

If you eat a cat, it only entertains you for one day. If you spare it, it eventually starts calling you funny names.

Hachijo is no longer sure whether it would make a better ending for Ange to find out or to never learn the truth. So, she's not going to write an ending a all.

Choosing not to know the truth is the more noble path. So, she will leave the future in Ange's care.

Still, it's her role in this tale to open the cat box and tear out whatever lies within.

In the end, the seal will be broken. Ange will reach the Single Truth. All of the Fragments will fade away.

Hachijo's servant enters just as Bern turns back into a cat. Is it more word form the publishing company?

Ah, good, the two of them can enjoy a light meal together.
Hachijo closes the drawer.
